Low Back Pain among Workers in a Paint Factory.

BACKGROUND: Back pain is common among factory workers and is responsible for about 25% of workers' compensation cases. However, data on back pain among workers from paint industry in Saudi Arabia are limited. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of low back pain and to evaluate the associated risk factors among workers of a paint factory. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study used a self-administered questionnaire to elicit data regarding demography, job characteristics and prevalence of low back pain in the past 12 months among workers of a paint…

Opioid-related mortality after occupational injury in Washington State: accounting for preinjury opioid use.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the impact of occupational injury and illness on opioid-related mortality while accounting for confounding by preinjury opioid use. METHODS: We employed a retrospective cohort study design using Washington State workers' compensation data for 1994-2000 injuries linked to US Social Security Administration earnings and mortality data and National Death Index (NDI) cause of death data from 1994 to 2018. We categorised injuries as lost-time versus medical-only, where the former involved more than 3 days off work or permanent disability. We determined death status and cause…

What Factors Are Associated With Revision Cubital Tunnel Release Within 3 Years?

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that patient demographics such as age, payer factors such as insurance type, clinical characteristics such as preoperative opioid use, and disease grade but not surgical procedure are associated with revision surgery to treat cubital tunnel syndrome. However, prior studies evaluating factors associated with revision surgery after primary cubital tunnel release have been relatively small and have involved patients from a single institution or included only a single payer. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What percentage of patients who underwent cubital tunnel release unde

Occupational skin diseases: reliability and utility of the data in the various registers; the course from notification to compensation and the costs. A case study from Denmark.

Occupational diseases affect many people and may have serious social and economic consequences. In 1984, the National Labour Inspection Service established the Register of Occupational Diseases (ROD). The purpose of the central register was to provide information about injury-causing factors and risk groups, etc., changes in risk factors (ongoing monitoring and warning system), and to document the effects of preventive activities. However, we are dealing with several uncertain factors (i.e., whether the number of notified cases is too high or too low), and although the ROD contains a lot of in

[Pathogenesis of insertion tendinitis of the elbow in insurance medicine].

The pathogenesis of insertion tendinosis of the elbow,--lateral as well as medial epicondylitis--is difficult to define precisely. Different hypotheses have been postulated with a correspondingly large number of alternative therapeutic proposals. At first view, the prime factor may be a repetitive stress of the groups of muscles involved, respectively of the extensors of the hand and the wrist. In fact, the etiology is multifactorial and includes a cluster of causes. A series of 661 cases of insertion tendinosis of the elbow--lateral and medial epicondylitis--seen over 16 years in a private ou

Development of a work rehabilitation center.

Because many employees re-injure themselves upon returning to the workplace after rehabilitation, it became apparent (especially in the era of rising workmans compensation costs) that some employees' jobs needed to be modified. In this case study, a work rehabilitation center with work-hardening and physical conditioning was considered a viable solution.

Occupational contact dermatitis in New South Wales.

Five hundred and seventy patients with occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) were seen between 1984 and 1990 at the Skin and Cancer Foundation in Sydney. Data derived from these patients demonstrated that hairdressing, food, construction and the medical industries were the most at risk of OCD. The hairdressing and food industries had a high percentage of apprentices suffering OCD whilst the 35 to 44 year age bracket was most at risk in the construction industry. Allergic contact dermatitis was responsible for 38.2% of cases. The main allergens were chromate, thiuram, epoxy resin, nickel and co

The effect of prolonged exposure to industrial noise on otosclerosis.

More than 3000 workers referred by the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario have been evaluated for pension for industrial hearing loss. They include the normal proportion of otosclerotics, many of whom have had surgical therapy. The operations have been done by a wide variety of surgeons in the province of Ontario, and the results are representative of those which will be obtained in a large section of the Canadian community. The results are significantly worse than generally quoted, and some of the deficiencies are attributable to occupation. These include perilymph fistula from excessive

A review of allergic respiratory disease in laboratory animal workers.

There is increased recognition of hypersensitivity lung disease among workers with laboratory animals as an occupational disease. Symptoms of asthma in 44 of 78 workers with laboratory animal dander allergy reflected the serious consequences of this occupational ailment. Affected employee profiles induced family history of atopy; immediate (Type I) allergic reaction; symptoms of rhinitis, asthma, and cough; hypersensitivity to one or more species, most often rats, mice, and rabbits. Diagnosis depends on history and physical, radiologic, and laboratory examinations, including skin tests with re

Emergence of occupational medicine in Victorian times.

Lee, W. R. (1973).British Journal of Industrial Medicine,30, 118-124. Emergence of occupational medicine in Victorian times. The events surrounding the establishment and development of legislation to protect the health of people at work in Victorian times are already well documented. This paper deals with some other aspects of the development of occupational medicine. Medical opinions at the time did not always see the misuse of child labour as due simply to avaricious mill owners, but in part due to the parents and in part to the workmen subcontractors. The establishment of the certifying sur

Endoscopic carpal tunnel release: a review of 753 cases in 486 patients.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic carpal tunnel release is gaining increasing acceptance relative to the standard open carpal tunnel release for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. Concerns about endoscopic carpal tunnel release include effectiveness of therapy and complication rates. This study attempted to evaluate outcomes of endoscopic carpal tunnel release in a large patient cohort. METHODS: Four hundred eighty-six patients (753 hands) with carpal tunnel syndrome who underwent endoscopic carpal tunnel release by a single surgeon were reviewed retrospectively. Data included demographics, subjec

Predictive value of the DASH tool for predicting return to work of injured workers with musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) tool added to the predictive ability of established prognostic factors, including patient demographic and clinical outcomes, to predict return to work (RTW) in injured workers with musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders of the upper extremity. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using a population-based database from the Workers' Compensation Board of Alberta (WCB-Alberta) that focused on claimants with upper extremity injuries was used. Besides the DASH, potential predictors included demographic, occupational,…

Postsurgical Opioid Prescribing Among Injured Workers in Washington State: 2017-2020 Trends and Policy Effects.

INTRODUCTION: The widespread adoption of longer duration opioid prescribing for acute pain management following surgeries has coincided with concerning increases in misuse, dependence, and overdose. We evaluated the impact of voluntary opioid prescribing guidelines and concurrent state pharmacy rules on prescribing trends following surgeries for work-related injuries. METHODS: We analyzed claims data for surgical and postoperative care in the Washington State workers' compensation system, linked with prescription drug monitoring program data, from 2017 to 2020. We evaluated whether rates of l…
