The synthesis of racemic isochromans from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) derived anacardic acids is described. Two key steps for the synthesis of the isochromans were utilized. (i) The benzylic bromination of methyl 2-methoxy-6-pentadecylbenzoate was accomplished with N-bromosuccinimide in the green solvent tert-butyl acetate to afford methyl 2-methoxy-6-(pentadec-1-en-1-yl)benzoate. The aim of this study was to identify an anti-inflammatory compound from D. viscosa leaves. The structure of this bioactive substance was elucidated by IR and NMR studies, which indicated that this natural product corresponds to hautriwaic acid (HA). 4-Substituted-pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(1H)-ones 4a-c were synthesized by oxidation of 4-substituted-dihydropyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(1H)-ones 3a-c which were in turn prepared from arylidenemalononitriles 1a-c and 6-aminothiouracil 2. In this paper, a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method combined with densitometry has been described. The structure of the uridine adduct with the acetate ester of the carcinogen 3-hydroxy-1-methylxanthine has been determined. Covalent binding is between C-8 of xanthine and O-2 of uracil. This was determined from studies of the NMR spectrum, mass spectra and solvolysis in liquid hydrogen sulfide. The nucleoside adduct, formed with uridine, is identical with the adduct with polyuridylic acid after enzymatic hydrolysis.
