Velocity-dependent ankle torque in rats after contusion injury of the midthoracic spinal cord: time course.

Progressive neurophysiological changes in the excitability of the pathways that subserved ankle extensor stretch reflexes were observed following midthoracic contusion. The purpose of the present study was to determine the nature and time course of velocity-dependent changes in the excitability of the ankle stretch reflex following T(8) contusion injury. These studies were conducted in adult Sprague-Dawley rats using a 10-g 2.5-cm weight drop onto the exposed thoracic spinal cord (using an NYU injury device and a MASCIS protocol). Velocity-dependent ankle torques and triceps surae EMGs were me…

Effect of localized muscle fatigue on vertical ground reaction forces and ankle joint motion during running.

The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in the vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) and ankle joint motion during the first 50% of the stance phase of running following fatiguing exercise of either the dorsiflexors or the invertors of the foot. VGRFs, sagittal and rearfoot kinematic data were collected from 11 female recreational runners running at 2.9 m/second on a treadmill prior to and following localized muscle fatigue of either the invertors or dorsiflexors of the right foot. Loading rate of the impact peak force significantly increased following fatiguing exercise of the do…

Intense granulomatous inflammatory lesions associated with absorbable internal fixation devices made of polyglycolide in ankle fractures.

Since absorbable internal fracture fixation devices made of polyglycolide have been increasingly used clinically, a peculiar type of complication has emerged. After an initially uneventful course, a local nonbacterial inflammatory reaction appears two to four months after the operation, resulting in a copiously discharging sinus on the skin. A series of 286 patients with unimalleolar or bimalleolar fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using cylindrical rods made of polyglycolide. Among these there occurred 18 nonbacterial inflammatory tissue responses (6.3% of the tot

Condition-specific role of ankle proprioception in postural control in older adults: a stabilogram diffusion analysis approach.

This study examined whether Stabilogram Diffusion Analysis (SDA) parameters differ between younger and older adults across sensory conditions, and whether reduced ankle proprioceptive acuity correlates with SDA parameters in older adults, specifically when standing on a foam surface with and without visual input. Fifty-three healthy adults (25 older) participated. Ankle proprioception was evaluated through Kinesthesia Threshold (KT) and Joint Repositioning Error (JRE), and static postural control was measured with a pressure platform under four conditions (foam/firm × eyes open/closed). SDA qu…

Dynamic modulation of corticomuscular coherence during ankle dorsiflexion after stroke: towards hybrid BCI for lower-limb rehabilitation.

Objective. Hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI) systems incorporate electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) signals to extract corticomuscular coherence (CMC) features, enabling self-modulation of neural communication. While promising for stroke rehabilitation, the neurophysiological mechanism underlying hybrid BCI therapy remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we characterized post-stroke CMC dynamics during ankle dorsiflexion and further established their relationship with functional motor recovery.Approach. We acquired synchronous EEG and high-density EMG recording…

Hip flexor and ankle dorsiflexor strength associated with gait speed in post-stroke hemiparesis: Cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Lower-limb flexor muscle strength, including hip flexor (HF) and ankle dorsiflexor (AD) strength, is important for limb advancement and walking after stroke. However, their individual and combined associations with gait speed (GS) in adults with post-stroke hemiparesis are not well understood, especially in KSA. Thus, the present study examined the individual and combined associations of HF and AD strength with GS in this population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 60 ambulatory adults with post-stroke hemiparesis who were recruited from a tertiary rehabilitation hosp…

Total Ankle Arthroplasty Kinematics Using a Symmetric Bicondylar Talar Component Design: A Cadaveric Gait Simulation Short Report.

BACKGROUND: The availability of total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) systems with varying designs of talar condylar geometry has increased. However, it remains unclear how these features influence the motion of the ankle and hindfoot joints. This study assessed the ankle and hindfoot kinematics using a contemporary TAA system with a symmetric bicondylar talar component design. METHODS: TAA was performed in eleven mid-tibia specimens. A 6-degree-of-freedom robot sequentially simulated the stance phase for the intact and post-TAA conditions. The kinematics and range of motion (ROM) of the ankle, subt…
