This paper uses a mathematical framework to predict the long-term consequences of chemotherapy for the age distribution of schistosomiasis morbidity. The framework incorporates a previously validated transmission model, which is here extended to capture effects on 2 forms of Schistosoma mansoni morbidity: early disease exemplified by hepatomegaly and late disease exemplified by Symmer's fibrosis. The main aim of this analysis is to show how such an approach could be used to explore the probable public health consequences of decades of control. It is suggested that this procedure could usefully

The authors present 27 cases of cerebral hydatid cyst (CHCy) treated between 1980 and 1992. These cases of CHCy represent 2.8% of all cases of expansive nontraumatic lesions in children. Most of the patients were between 6 and 10 years of age. There was a substantial prevalence of male patients-18 cases (66.6%). Most of the children with CHCy were from rural areas. The cysts were all located in the cerebral hemispheres (none in the posterior fossa). Usually two or three lobes were affected and the cysts were most often retrorolandic. Only 8 patients (29.6%) also had pulmonary or hepatic infest

Ten adult patients with proven fasciolosis were enrolled in the study. Serum samples were obtained before and one month after successful treatment using a single oral dose of triclabendazole. It was observed that, serum triglycerides (TG) and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL-C) increased, while serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) exhibited a significant decrease. These changes were due to the degenerative necrotic damage of the hepatocytes. One month after treatment, the serum level of total cholesterol, HDL-C

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis, occasionally associated with long-term neurologic sequelae such as epilepsy or hydrocephalus, is more often a condition characterized by a benign course and spontaneous remission without permanent neurologic symptoms. This variability in outcome has led to difficulties in the interpretation of studies of the effectiveness of drugs used to treat this condition.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative efficacy of two antihelminthic agents against each other and against symptomatic treatment alone.
METHODS: Randomized clinical trial of treatment of patients with newl

Transplanted infections of Brugia pahangi and Dipetalonema viteae in male BALB/c and CDI mice were investigated as models for evaluating potential antifilarial compounds. The physiology and genetics of the above mouse strains are better defined than any of the rodent species currently used for primary in vivo screening, facilitating a more reproducible means for predicting the filaricidal activity of compounds. The recoveries of B. pahangi macrofilariae, implanted intraperitoneally were greater than or equal to 50% up to six weeks after implant in both CDI and BALB/c mice. The recoveries of D.

Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) is an effective microfilaricidal drug against Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori--the three lymphatic-dwelling filariae infecting humans. However, effectiveness in killing the adult stage of these parasites has been more difficult to establish. The present review of available evidence from the literature suggests that: (1) in addition to being a microfilaricidal agent, DEC in conventional dosages effectively kills adult worms of these three parasites in many patients; (2) relatively high total dosages of DEC (including dosages considerably in excess

Amoscanate possesses chemotherapeutic activity against schistosomes, and in higher doses against many other helminths including filariids and Hymenolepis diminuta. The primary mode of action of this compound is unknown. Effects of the drug on the carbohydrate metabolism as well as on the tegumental and nephridial epithelia of H. diminuta were examined. At various time intervals after administration of the drug to rats infected with H. diminuta, the parasites were recovered and incubated in glucose-salts medium for 90 min. Chemotherapy resulted in decreases in succinate, lactate, and acetate re

Six drugs in common use for the treatment of parasitic infections of man were given to 18 adult patients suffering from onchocerciasis. None of the six (metronidazole, tinidazole, mebendazole, trichlorophone, oxamniquine and pyrantel pamoate) showed any evidence of substantial activity against the microfilariae or adult worms of O. volvulus. The mean reduction in skin microfilarial counts a week after drug treatment (a measure of microfilaricidal action) was highest in patients treated with trichlorophone (47.0%) and mebendazole (40.0%). The rate of build-up of microfilariae over a follow-up p

UNLABELLED: Antimicrobial resistance represents a critical global health threat, demanding innovative therapeutic strategies. In this study, we investigate the repurposing potential of pyrvinium pamoate (PP)-a long-established anthelmintic agent-for antibacterial applications. Comprehensive in vitro analyses revealed that while gram-negative bacteria exhibited inherent resistance due to limited drug uptake, gram-positive pathogens, particularly within the orders Actinomycetales and Bacillales, were markedly susceptible at low micromolar concentrations. Enhanced antibacterial efficacy was obser

Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, commonly known as night-flowering jasmine or parijat, is a plant of notable importance in traditional medicine and cultural practices. It is characterized by its nocturnally blooming, fragrant flowers. Traditional medicinal systems have extensively utilized this species for its therapeutic properties, which modern clinical research has supported. This plant, renowned for its therapeutic potential, has been integral to folk medicine for addressing antibilious conditions, gynecological disorders, and liver protection, highlighting its historical significance. This review

Sustainable parasite control practices are necessary to combat the negative effects of gastrointestinal nematodes on animal health and production while reducing the selection pressure for anthelmintic resistance. Parasite diagnostic tests can inform treatment decisions, the timing and effectiveness of treatment and enable livestock breeding programmes. In recent years new diagnostic methods have been developed, some incorporating machine learning (ML), to facilitate the detection and enumeration of parasite eggs. It is important to understand the technical characteristics and performance of su
