The Potential Role of miRNAs as Predictive Biomarkers in Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Neurodevelopmental disorders are defined as a set of abnormal brain developmental conditions marked by the early childhood onset of cognitive, behavioral, and functional deficits leading to memory and learning problems, emotional instability, and impulsivity. Autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Tourette syndrome, fragile X syndrome, and Down's syndrome are a few known examples of neurodevelopmental disorders. Although they are relatively common in both developed and developing countries, very little is currently known about their underlying molecular mechanisms.

Psychiatric manifestations of inborn errors of metabolism: A systematic review.

Inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are characterized by deficits in metabolic enzymes as a result of an inherited disease, leading to the accumulation or decreased excretion of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Although IEMs are often diagnosed during childhood, adolescent and adult onset variants may be accompanied by less somatic and more psychiatric manifestations, which often hampers recognition by psychiatrists of the distinction between a primary and secondary psychiatric disorder. To help clinicians in the diagnostic process, we aimed to provide an overview of psychiatric manifestatio

Early Detection and Outcome in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and heterogeneous mental disorder that is known to have the onset in young age, often in adolescence. For this reason, it is of fundamental importance to identify clinical conditions of childhood and adolescence that present a high risk to evolve in BPD. Investigations indicate that early borderline pathology (before 19 years) predict long-term deficits in functioning, and a higher percentage of these patients continue to present some BPD symptoms up to 20 years. There is a general accordance among investigators that good competence in both chi

X-linked Aarskog syndrome: report on a novel FGD1 gene mutation. Executive dysfunction as part of the behavioural phenotype.

Aarskog-Scott syndrome [OMIM 100050] is a predominantly X-linked disorder that is phenotypically characterized by short stature, craniofacial dysmorphisms, brachydactyly and urogenital abnormalities. The level of intelligence shows a great variability and no specific behavioural phenotype has been described so far. In about 20 percent ofAarskog families, a mutation in the FGD1 gene located in Xp11.21 can be identified. In the present study, four affected males from the fourth generation of a large Dutch family (published in 1983 by Van de Vooren et al. (41)) are described. A novel FGD1 missens

Growing up with ADHD: findings from an 18-year longitudinal follow-up study of adults with childhood ADHD, their siblings, and controls.

BACKGROUND: The prevalent childhood-onset disorder attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (5-7%) poses risks for adult functioning, which should be identified with long-term prospective follow-up studies including a broad range of outcomes. METHODS: Differences in outcomes (measures of psychiatric status, behavioural/emotional problems, academic/professional functioning, adaptive functioning, neurocognition, physical health, healthcare service use) were investigated in an 18-year follow-up study of adults with childhood ADHD (n=154, M±SD age=27.4±3.7, 68% males), their siblings witho

"I Felt Like a Burden": An Exploration Into the Experience of Romantic Relationships for People With ADHD.

Romantic relationships can have additional complexities for individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The present study employed Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) to explore what challenges adults with ADHD have experienced in their romantic relationships. Adults with ADHD (N = 355) answered an open-ended survey question asking if and how their ADHD had negatively impacted their romantic relationships. RTA resulted in four overarching themes and seven subthemes. Too Much and Never Enough: The Emotional Rollercoaster of Rejection Sensitivity and The Struggle for Stabilit

ADHD medication discontinuation and non-adherence: a Norwegian population-based register study.

BACKGROUND: Poor persistence and adherence to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication is a significant barrier to effective long-term care, particularly during adolescence, yet age-specific and sex-specific trajectories remain poorly characterised. OBJECTIVE: To characterise medication initiation, discontinuation and long-term adherence patterns for children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD in a real-world setting. METHODS: A nationwide retrospective cohort study, including 8961 children and adolescents (aged <18 years) with a new ADHD diagnosis in child and adolescent

Association among serum uric acid, hyperactivity, impulsivity and dietary components in adults: a cross-sectional study Uric acid, hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms, and dietary components in adults.

BACKGROUND: A positive association has been reported between elevated serum levels of uric acid (UA) with impulsivity and hyperactivity, behavior in murine models, and human psychopathologies. Still, other factors, such as diet composition, have not been considered. This study aims to determine the association between serum UA, impulsivity/hyperactivity symptoms, and dietary components in adults with psychiatric disorders. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 128 adults who attended a psychiatric service. Fasting serum UA levels were determined by spectrophotometry. I

Disciplinary removal patterns among students with other health impairments and emotional disturbance: A three-year descriptive analysis of IDEA Part B data.

Students classified under Other Health Impairment (OHI), a category that includes Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are frequently disciplined in school settings despite ADHD being classified as a neurodevelopmental rather than a behavioral disorder. This study examined patterns of disciplinary removal among students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B, focusing on comparisons between OHI and Emotional Disturbance (ED). Using publicly available IDEA Part B discipline data, a descriptive longitudinal analysis was conducted across three acad

Unmasking Potential Impacts of Parent and Coparent ADHD on Mental Health in the First Year Postpartum.

OBJECTIVE: Parental mental health plays a critical role in the wellbeing of the family, yet few studies have examined how parental ADHD affects postpartum depression and anxiety. This study investigates the hypothesis that parent (including coparent) ADHD symptoms are associated with postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms. METHODS: 117 mother-father dyads (half with parental ADHD) were recruited when their infants were 6 to 10 months old. Participants completed questionnaires on ADHD, depression, anxiety, and social support. Clinician-administered semi-structured interviews assessed ADHD

ADHD Medication and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents: A Retrospective Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether higher attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication coverage was associated with lower depressive symptoms among adolescents who live in underresourced neighborhoods and/or identify as a member of a minoritized group. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, adolescents aged 12 to 18 years with ADHD completed a depression screener at their annual well visit. Patients were seen at a primary care office that predominantly serves minoritized, Medicaid-insured youth from underresourced neighborhoods. We calculated ADHD medication coverage as the per

Irritability in children with RASopathies, insights into emotional dysregulation and social impairment.

RASopathies, including Noonan Syndrome (NS) and Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), are developmental disorders caused by germline mutations in genes of the RAS-mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway (RAS-MAPK). This study investigates irritability, a highly prevalent transdiagnostic construct, in children with NS and NF1 and the impact of RASopathy status on the associations between irritability, emotional dysregulation-related disorders, and social impairment. The sample comprises 174 children aged 4–17 (age mean = 9.49; 98 females), including 113 children with RASopathies (NS n = 85, NF1 n =

Complexity Analysis based on Parietal Fuzzy Entropy to Facilitate ADHD Diagnosis in Young Children.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common condition affecting the development of neurons in children. Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis of ADHD in young children is of paramount importance. In this study, the 8-channel wireless wearable EEG measurement device was employed to record EEG data from 30 children diagnosed with ADHD and 30 typical development (TD) young children aged 4-7 years. The data was collected both during rest and while the children performed a Kiddie Continuous Performance Test (K-CPT). We extract relative power spectral density (PSD) unaffecte

Positive Emotion Dysregulation and Social Impairments in Adolescents with and without ADHD.

Although research suggests that emotion dysregulation may underlie adolescents' social impairments, studies have focused almost exclusively on the dysregulation of negative emotions. The present study addressed this gap in the literature by examining whether behavioral manifestations of positive emotion dysregulation are also implicated. A sample of 13-18-year-old adolescents (56.8% female) with and without a childhood diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was used, increasing variability in impairment profiles. Adolescents self-reported behavioral difficulties related t

Pervasive versus situational childhood ADHD: latent classes and their clinical characteristics, based on parent and teacher ratings in a large longitudinal population sample.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses require symptoms to be present in two settings. Low levels of concordance between symptoms rated at home and school raise questions regarding this approach. The aim was to examine whether there are sub-groups with context-specific expressions of ADHD symptoms (i.e., at home or school only) with clinically significant problems sufficient to support a new diagnostic formulation. We applied latent class transition analysis to parent and teacher data (N = 10,476) from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), collected a

Air pollution and attention in Polish schoolchildren with and without ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Development and functioning of attention-a key component of human cognition-can be affected by environmental factors. We investigated whether long- and short-term exposure to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter < 10 μm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are related to attention in 10- to 13-year-old children living in Polish towns recruited in the NeuroSmog case-control study. METHODS: We investigated associations between air pollution and attention separately in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, n = 187), a sensitive, at-risk population with im
