Cognitive coping and goal adjustment after first-time myocardial infarction: relationships with symptoms of depression.

The authors studied the relationships among cognitive coping strategies, goal adjustment processes (disengagement and reengagement), and depressive symptomatology in a sample of 139 patients who had experienced a first-time acute myocardial infarction between 3 and 12 months before data assessment. They assessed cognitive coping strategies, goal adjustment, and depressive symptoms by the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the Goal Obstruction Questionnaire, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, respectively. Main statistical methods were Pearson correlations and multiple regr

Key factors in smoking cessation intervention among 15-16-year-olds.

The authors aimed to investigate factors associated with smoking cessation among adolescents after tobacco intervention. They examined smokers (n = 127) from one birth cohort (n = 545) in the city of Kotka in Finland. These smokers were randomized in 3 intervention groups the dentist (n = 44) and the school nurse (n = 42 groups), and a control group (n = 39). After 2 months, the authors sent a follow-up questionnaire to the initial smokers to find out who had quit. The authors found that those whose best friend was a nonsmoker were more likely to stop smoking (relative risk RR 7.0 95% Cl 4.6-10

Psychosocial work stressors for insomnia: a prospective study on 50-60-year-old adults in the working population.

BACKGROUND: Work-related stressors are often viewed as being a source for disturbed sleep. PURPOSE: This prospective study aimed to examine whether psychosocial work stressors were related to the development and maintenance of insomnia. METHOD: From a randomly selected sample from the general population (N = 3,600), 1,873 participants aged 50-60 years old in the workforce filled out a baseline and 1-year follow-up questionnaire. Stepwise logistic regressions were used to investigate whether work stressors were related to the development and maintenance of insomnia over 1 year. RESULTS: The

Maladaptive coping strategies in patients with bruxism compared to non-bruxing controls.

BACKGROUND: Sleep bruxism is the non-functional grinding or clenching of teeth during sleep. It may lead to tooth damage and myofascial pain. Although stress is discussed as a main causal agent, there is a lack of studies concerning coping strategies in patients with sleep bruxism. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether bruxers, compared to non-bruxing individuals, apply maladaptive coping strategies. METHOD: Seventy-five sleep bruxers and 38 non-bruxers were selected by dental examination and tested by a German coping questionnaire (SVF78). RESULTS: A significant

Assessing subjective sleepiness during a night of sleep deprivation: examining the internal state and behavioral dimensions of sleepiness.

Investigators in previous research have indicated that subjective measures of sleepiness may separate into state- and behavior-based dimensions; however, researchers have not examined this under sleep deprivation conditions. The authors' purpose in this study was to examine several measures of subjective sleepiness under sleep deprivation conditions following completion of various tasks. Fourteen students participated in a 28-hour sleep deprivation study and completed vigilance and cognitive tasks 4 times during the night. The authors administered subjective measures of sleepiness after each t

HIV risk behavior in male and female Russian sexually transmitted disease clinic patients.

Russia is experiencing one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world. Russian sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic patients are at elevated risk for infection with HIV and other STDs due to unsafe sexual behaviors. Future risk reduction intervention efforts for this group must be grounded in a solid understanding of the factors associated with risky behaviors. We collected information about the sexual behaviors, substance use, protective strategies, and HIV-related attitudes of 400 high-risk men and women presenting at an STD clinic in a major Russian metropolis. Alcohol use in co

Cognitive, behavioral, and physiological reactivity to chronic itching: analogies to chronic pain.

It is well-known that cognitive, behavioral, and physiological reactivity to pain, such as catastrophizing, avoidance of activity, and increased physiological responses, can unfavorably affect long-term outcomes in patients with chronic pain. In line with similarities between the psychophysiology of pain and itching, corresponding mechanisms may be relevant for the maintenance of chronic itching. The goal of this study was to examine the role of self-reported cognitive, behavioral, and physiological reactivity factors on itching-related outcomes in 235 patients with chronic skin diseases suffe

Dimensions of hostility in Japanese undergraduate students.

Japanese undergraduate students (N = 512) completed the Japanese versions of 4 hostility questionnaires: Aggression Questionnaire (Ando et al., 1999); State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Suzuki & Haruki, 1994); Müller Anger Coping Questionnaire (Otake et al., 2000); and Cynicism Questionnaire (Izawa & Nomura, 2004). Dimensions of hostility, determined by factor analysis for the 12 subscales of the 4 questionnaires, revealed a 4-factor solution: Expressive Hostility, Inhibitive Hostility, Assertiveness, and Hostile Cognition. Prior studies with Western participants had suggested a 2-factor

Trait anger and blood pressure recovery following acute pain: evidence for opioid-mediated effects.

Previous work has suggested that positive associations between trait anger (TRANG) and pain sensitivity are due to dysfunctional endogenous opioid analgesic systems. In this study, we examined whether TRANG is associated with impaired opioid modulation of blood pressure (BP) recovery. A total of 46 pain-free normotensive controls and 69 normotensive chronic low back pain (LBP) sufferers received opioid blockade (8 mg naloxone i.v.) or placebo in randomized, counterbalanced order in separate sessions. During each, participants underwent a 1-min finger pressure pain task followed by an ischemic

Hostility, conflict and cardiovascular responses in married couples: a focus on the dyad.

This study examined the relations of one's own total trait hostility and one's spouse's hostility as influences on cardiovascular (CV) responses to couple interactions (including conflict discussions) in 45 married couples aged 24-50. Systolic blood pressure and cardiac index (CI) reactivity to conflict discussion and recovery after conflict was greater in low hostile males if they were interacting with high hostile wives (p < .02). Vascular resistance index (VRI) reactivity to interactions was greater in high hostile husbands with high hostile wives (p < .05). Women showed no adverse CV effec

Associations between repression, general maladjustment, body weight, and body shape in older males: the Normative Aging Study.

We examined relationships between repression, general maladjustment, body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The participants were 1,081 healthy older men from the Normative Aging Study. Repression and General Maladjustment Scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory were composite measures of personality. Repression was associated with lower BMI and WHR, and maladjustment with higher BMI and WHR. However, associations between WHR and personality dimensions were no longer significant when controlling for BMI, but associations between BMI and personality dimensions re

Adverse experience in childhood as a developmental risk factor for altered immune status in adulthood.

Compelling evidence is now available that adverse childhood experiences are associated with adult pathology. However, understanding of the pathways and mechanisms underlying these associations is limited. Participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition in Norfolk, UK (EPIC-Norfolk), aged 40 to 80 years, provided an opportunity to investigate the hypothesis that adverse experience in childhood is associated with peripheral leukocyte count in adulthood in the context of a large-scale population-based cohort study. White blood cell counts were available from 11,36

Assessment of functional gastrointestinal disorders using the Gastro-Questionnaire.

The purpose was to investigate the reliability and factorial structure of the Gastro-Questionnaire for the screening and psychometric measurement of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGDs). The questionnaire contains 27 gastrointestinal symptom items drawn from the Rome-II criteria, which are rated by frequency and severity, as well as some items to exclude organic diseases. The questionnaire was administered to 259 normal participants and to 69 participants of the annual German meeting of patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Reliability was good (Cronbach's alpha for frequency and sev

First-degree relatives of breast-cancer patients: cognitive perceptions, coping, and adherence to breast self-examination.

The author assessed patterns of breast self-examination (BSE) related to cognitive appraisal, coping, and emotional distress in 80 women with first-degree relatives who were breast-cancer patients and 47 matched controls. Participants with first-degree relatives adhered to BSE better than did women with no family history of breast cancer, and women whose relatives had recurrent or metastatic disease performed more BSE than those whose relatives were currently disease free. Greater adherence to BSE was associated with lower levels of depression, more problem-focused coping, older age, and more

Childhood posttraumatic stress disorder and efforts to cope after Hurricane Floyd.

The authors report on the level of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced by fourth-grade children 6 months after Hurricane Floyd and describe the children's efforts to cope with their stress. All of the children they studied were directly affected by the hurricane, secondary to the destruction of their school by floodwaters. The homes of 37% of these children were also flooded. Ninety-five percent of the children experienced at least mild symptoms of PTSD, and 71% had symptoms that were moderate to very severe. Children who reported that their homes were flooded were 3 times more li

Psychosocial vulnerability, hostility, and family history of coronary heart disease among male and female college students.

This study evaluated the utility of the psychosocial vulnerability model for understanding the hostility-coronary heart disease (CHD) relationship among college students at risk for CHD. Interrelationships of cognitive, affective, and behavioral hostility with structural and functional social support were examined. College undergraduates with a parental history of CHD (n = 121) and a control group of 125 students with no CHD family history completed measures of hostility and social support. Among women, a significant negative correlation was found between affective-experiential hostility and f

Behavioral treatment of hypertensive heart disease in African Americans: rationale and design of a randomized controlled trial.

African Americans experience higher morbidity and mortality than Whites do as a result of hypertension and associated cardiovascular disease. Chronic psychosocial stress has been considered an important contributing factor to these high rates. The authors describe the rationale and design for a planned randomized controlled trial comparing Transcendental Meditation, a stress-reduction technique, with lifestyle education in the treatment of hypertension and hypertensive heart disease in urban African Americans. They pretested 170 men and women aged 20 to 70 years over a 3-session baseline perio
