[Microlissencephaly due to pathogenic variants of NDE1: from pathology to normal brain development].

Pathogenic variants of the gene NDE1 (Nuclear Distribution Element 1) in humans lead to microlissencephaly which associates a reduced head circumference and a simplified gyration. Microlissencephaly is the most severe deficit of neurogenesis described to date but its precise physiopathological mechanism is not yet well known. The NDE1 gene encodes a phosphoprotein that is essential to neurogenesis and that is expressed in various cell compartments of neuroblasts. More than 60 interaction partners with NDE1 have been reported, notably various proteins involved in formation of the mitotic spindl

A broad filter between call frequency and peripheral auditory sensitivity in northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster).

Acoustic communication is a fundamental component of mate and competitor recognition in a variety of taxa and requires animals to detect and differentiate among acoustic stimuli (Bradbury and Vehrencamp in Principles of animal communication, 2nd edn., Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, 2011). The matched filter hypothesis predicts a correspondence between peripheral auditory tuning of receivers and properties of species-specific acoustic signals, but few studies have assessed this relationship in rodents. We recorded vocalizations and measured auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in northern grass

The paradox of hearing at the lek: auditory sensitivity increases after breeding in female gray treefrogs (Hyla chrysoscelis).

Both behavioral receptivity and neural sensitivity to acoustic mate attraction signals vary across the reproductive cycle, particularly in seasonally breeding animals. Across a variety of taxa receptivity to signals increases, as does peripheral auditory sensitivity, as females transition from a non-breeding to breeding condition. We recently documented decreases in receptivity to acoustic mate attraction signals and circulating hormone levels, but an increase in peripheral auditory sensitivity to call-like stimuli following oviposition in Cope's gray treefrogs (Hyla chrysoscelis). However, it

The High Cervical Anterolateral Retropharyngeal Approach.

The first high cervical anterolateral retropharyngeal (HCALR) approach was reported by Stevenson et al. for a clivus chordoma in 1966. Anterior approaches to the spine have often been developed in response to problems presented by tuberculous spondylitis. This approach is indicated in anterior high cervical spine cases such as tumour resection, abscess drainage, atlantoaxial subluxation; decompression and stabilization. To our knowledge, only 21 papers in the literature have mentioned this approach. Its main advantage over posterior approaches is easy positioning and minimal need for soft tiss

Intracranial endodermal cyst presenting with nonobstructive hydrocephalus: A case report.

RATIONALE: Endodermal cysts are rare benign lesions in the central nervous system. Their common symptoms include headache and neck pain caused by mass effect or inflammatory reaction. We report the case of an elderly woman with intracranial endodermal cyst who presented with nonobstructive hydrocephalus. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 78-year-old woman presented with acute deterioration of consciousness caused by acute hydrocephalus. She subsequently underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. Eighteen months after this operation, she developed numbness of extremities and gait and progressive cognit

Endoscopic Endonasal Transclival Approach for Resection of a Pontine Glioma: Surgical Planning, Surgical Anatomy, and Technique.

BACKGROUND: The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) has been proposed as a potential alternative for ventral brainstem lesions. The surgical anatomy, feasibility, and limitations of the EEA for intrinsic brainstem lesions are still poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical planning, anatomy, and technique of an intrinsic pontine glioma operated via EEA. METHODS: Six-human brainstems were prepared for white matter microdissection. Ten healthy subjects were studied with high-definition fiber tractography (HDFT). A 56-yr-old female with right-hemiparesis underwent EEA for an exophy

Linguistic effect on speech perception observed at the brainstem.

Linguistic experience affects speech perception from early infancy, as previously evidenced by behavioral and brain measures. Current research focuses on whether linguistic effects on speech perception can be observed at an earlier stage in the neural processing of speech (i.e., auditory brainstem). Brainstem responses reflect rapid, automatic, and preattentive encoding of sounds. Positive experiential effects have been reported by examining the frequency-following response (FFR) component of the complex auditory brainstem response (cABR) in response to sustained high-energy periodic portions

Area Postrema: Fetal Maturation, Tumors, Vomiting Center, Growth, Role in Neuromyelitis Optica.

INTRODUCTION: The area postrema in the caudal fourth ventricular floor is highly vascular without blood-brain or blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier. In addition to its function as vomiting center, several others are part of the circumventricular organs for vasomotor/angiotensin II regulation, role in neuromyelitis optica related to aquaporin-4, and somatic growth and appetite regulation. Functions are immature at birth. The purpose was to demonstrate neuronal, synaptic, glial, or ependymal maturation in the area postrema of normal fetuses. We describe three area postrema tumors. METHODS: Secti

Pathologic Laughter as an Early and Unusual Presenting Symptom of Petroclival Meningioma: a Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Pathologic laughter is inappropriate, involuntary, and unmotivated laughter episodes that may or may not be associated with mirth or amusement. Although associated with many diffuse brain pathologies, its association with intracranial focal mass lesions causing ventrolateral brainstem compression, like petroclival meningioma, is very rare. The exact pathophysiology of this interesting and unusual clinical symptom is unknown, but probably involves disinhibition and release of the so-called coordination center located in the upper brainstem due to compression by the tumor. Click reception in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena): Effects of electrode and contact transducer location on the auditory brainstem response.

Unlike terrestrial mammals that have unambiguous aerial sound transmission pathways via the outer ear and tympanum, sound reception pathways in most odontocetes are not well understood. Recent studies have used auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurements to examine sound reception pathways. This study sought to determine how sound source placements, recording electrode arrangements, and ABR peak analyses affect interpretations of sound reception in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Click stimuli were delivered in air from a contact transducer ("jawphone"). Early ABR peaks (representi

Well-formed cerebellum and brainstem-like structures in a mature ovarian teratoma: Neuropathological observations.

In the surgical case of a mature cystic teratoma of the ovary that arose in a 16-year-old girl, a large amount of well-differentiated and highly organized cerebellar tissue was found. Three layers of the cerebellar cortex were well formed, and synaptophysin-positive "glomeruli" were found in the granule cell layer. Some Purkinje cells exhibited focal expansion and a dysmorphic appearance of the dendrites. Adjacent to the cerebellar tissue, a large space lined by the ependymal layer and a club-shaped CNS tissue mass resembling the brainstem were found, and structures reminiscent of the midbrain

Supraspinal control of spinal reflex responses to body bending during different behaviours in lampreys.

KEY POINTS: Spinal reflexes are substantial components of the motor control system in all vertebrates and centrally driven reflex modifications are essential to many behaviours, but little is known about the neuronal mechanisms underlying these modifications. To study this issue, we took advantage of an in vitro brainstem-spinal cord preparation of the lamprey (a lower vertebrate), in which spinal reflex responses to spinal cord bending (caused by signals from spinal stretch receptor neurons) can be evoked during different types of fictive behaviour. Our results demonstrate that reflexes obser

A compact representation for the auditory full-range response and its fast denoising using an image filter based on the Radon transform.

The Auditory Brainstem, Middle-Latency and Late Responses, a class of event-related potentials (ERPs), are of considerable interest in neuroscience research as robust neural correlates of different processing stages along the auditory pathway. While most research to date centers around one of the responses at a time for practical reasons, recent efforts indicate a paradigm shift towards acquiring them together, enabling the simultaneous monitoring of all auditory processing stages from the brainstem to the cortex. In this paper, we introduce a compact representation for this Auditory Full-Rang

The Human Model: Changing Focus on Autism Research.

The lack of live human brain cells for research has slowed progress toward understanding the mechanisms underlying autism spectrum disorders. A human model using reprogrammed patient somatic cells offers an attractive alternative, as it captures a patient's genome in relevant cell types. Despite the current limitations, the disease-in-a-dish approach allows for progressive time course analyses of target cells, offering a unique opportunity to investigate the cellular and molecular alterations before symptomatic onset. Understanding the current drawbacks of this model is essential for the corre

Near-Death Experiences in patients with locked-in syndrome: Not always a blissful journey.

Memories of Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) most often are recounted as emotionally positive events. At present, no satisfactory explanatory model exists to fully account for the rich phenomenology of NDEs following a severe acute brain injury. The particular population of patients with locked-in syndrome (LIS) provides a unique opportunity to study NDEs following infratentorial brain lesions. We here retrospectively characterized the content of NDEs in 8 patients with LIS caused by an acute brainstem lesion (i.e., "LIS NDEs") and 23 NDE experiencers after coma with supratentorial lesions (i.e.,
