STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize spinal fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis are susceptible to fractures of the spinal column, even from minor trauma. However, the literature describing patients with ankylosing spondylitis and spinal fractures consists largely of case reports and small case series. The purpose of this study is to better characterize fractures of the ankylosed spine, including the patient population, locations of fracture, and outcomes in a

A retrospective survey of 36 cases treated in the Department of Neurosurgery, Hacettepe University Hospitals since 1970 was performed. Clinical presentation, aetiology and outcome of this rare disease compared to recently published series. All cases were admitted with signs of neural compression. Clinical and laboratory data suggesting an infectious origin were present only in 4 cases. Radiological investigation including magnetic resonance imaging in 10 patients, were not confirmative for an epidural abscess except for two cases. All cases underwent urgent surgical decompression and tuberculo

INTRODUCTION: The C3-dome, C7 reverse dome open-door laminoplasty technique preserves posterior cervical musculature and has been reported to improve postoperative cervical alignment while reducing axial neck pain and C5 palsy. This study investigates differences in postoperative dorsal cervical cord migration with this new technique compared to published data on traditional laminoplasty.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on consecutive patients who underwent C3 dome-C7 reverse dome open-door laminoplasty for cervical myelopathy. Clinical, surgical, and radiological outcomes were

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) encompasses several conditions that cause compression of the cervical spinal cord. While the pathobiology underlying compression-induced neural degeneration remains incompletely understood, microglial synaptic pruning, driven by CX3CR1, is thought to be a main contributor. The current study builds on previous work demonstrating that Cx3cr1-/- mice exhibit improved gait following DCM and seeks to determine if CX3CR1-mediated synaptic pruning underlies this improvement. We compared C57BL/6 (WT, wild-type) and Cx3cr1-/- mice across 12-weeks of DCM. Locomotor

BACKGROUND: Improving hand and arm function is an important goal for individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI). Activity Based Therapy (ABT) is a neurorestorative approach that incorporates a high intensity, long duration and effortful engagement to garner sensory-motor improvements. Spinal cord stimulation is a neuromodulation modality that can restore sensory-motor function. Spinal cord stimulation can elevate the excitability of the spinal neural network and potentially enhance the neurorestorative benefits of ABT. However, there is scarce evidence on the combined effects of ABT a

To determine if regional weather patterns could predict the severity of cervical spinal cord injuries (CSCI) across the United States. Non-elective CSCI patients from 2015 to 2020 were identified in the National Inpatient Sample. Linear mixed-effects models explored associations between CSCI features and weather patterns, with random effects for hospitals. Granger causality tests were performed for each region to assess if weather could predict complete CSCI. Cross-correlation analyses examined temporal trends. Logistic mixed-effects models evaluated correlations between CSCI severity and seas

Upper limb function is essential for performing activities of daily living (ADLs). Specifically for individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI), impairment of upper limb functions largely affect to reduce their ADLs. Conventional assessments for upper limb functions, for example, Simple Test for Evaluating Hand Function (STEF), is scored by the total time requirement of various types of upper limb movement and hand manipulation, and additional subjective evaluation would be complemented. While coordination of shoulder and elbow movements is a key function for ADLs in patients with CSCI

Cervical spinal cord injuries (cSCI) are associated with decreased breathing ability. Although no treatment options are currently available, moderate acute intermittent hypoxia (mAIH) is a promising therapeutic modality to improve breathing function after cSCI. Moderate AIH elicits phrenic motor plasticity via distinct, competing serotonin- or adenosine-driven mechanisms that interact via powerful crosstalk inhibition that constrains or even abolishes plasticity. The dominant mechanism driving plasticity depends on the spinal serotonin/adenosine balance. Shortly after cSCI, repeated AIH exposu

Using the first videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS), we aimed to identify clinical predictors of dysphagia in patients with acute and subacute traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (TCSCI). This retrospective chart review included 143 adults, who were diagnosed with TCSCI and underwent their first VFSS between 2018 and 2021. Patients with alert mental status and no history of traumatic brain injury or preexisting conditions causing dysphagia were included. The neurological status was assessed using the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary function tests are the gold standard of evaluating pulmonary function in individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI). However, there are limitations to its accessibility thereby reducing its clinical utility. Diaphragmatic ultrasound is used to evaluate pulmonary function in non-neurologic individuals but there is limited evidence demonstrating its benefit in individuals with SCI. The objective is to determine if diaphragmatic ultrasound measurements are correlated with forced vital capacity (FVC), peak cough flow (PCF), neurological level of injury (NLI), and/or m

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains the gold standard for evaluating spinal cord tissue damage after spinal cord injury (SCI). Several MRI findings may have some prognostic potential, but their evolution over time, especially from the subacute to the chronic phase has not been studied extensively. We performed a prospective observational longitudinal study exploring the evolution of MRI parameters from the subacute to chronic phase after human traumatic cervical SCI. The study, conducted between 2016 and 2021, involved standardized neurological examinations and MRI scans 1 month, 3 months
