In response to the continued staggering statistics of fires set by juveniles and the devastating personal and property costs that are associated with these fires, the Burn and Shock Trauma Institute of Loyola University Medical Center, in collaboration with the State Fire Marshal's Office; the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance; and representatives from the firefighting community, law enforcement, emergency medicine and mental health, came together to create the Burn Education Awareness Recognition and Support Program. Through financial grant support from the International Association of Firefighte

The Child Growth Foundation has published the first weight reference charts specifically designed for the breast-fed infant. Based on a sample of 120 long-term British breast-fed babies, the charts demonstrate the particular growth pattern of breast-fed babies. This differs from formula-fed infants in that breast-fed babies initially gain weight more rapidly, but from two to three months of age their weight gain decreases and they begin to move downwards across centiles. At present breast-fed babies are measured against the standard British 1990 weight reference chart rather than one that refl

This descriptive study examines the differences between sexually abused and non-sexually abused adolescent females in the foster care system who were participating in an independent living program. Fifty-four percent of the 190 girls met the criteria for being categorized as sexually abused. Those who experienced sexual abuse had also experienced significantly more of other types of child maltreatment. In addition, those who had been sexually abused were much more likely to be living in a congregate living setting, such as a group home or residential center, than those who were not sexually ab

Among the adverse mental health consequences of childhood trauma is the risk related to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood. Other risk factors for PTSD. including parental trauma exposure and parental PTSD, can also contribute to the experience of child trauma. We examined associations between childhood trauma and PTSD in 51 adult children of Holocaust survivors and 41 comparison subjects. in consideration of parental trauma exposure and parental PTSD. We also examined these variables in relation to 24-hr urinary cortisol levels. Adult offspring of Holocaust s

Phthalates are widely used plasticizers and solvents in a variety of consumer and personal care products, resulting in ubiquitous exposure across the general population. Pregnancy represents a particularly critical window of vulnerability, as prenatal phthalate exposures have been linked to adverse health outcomes, including preterm birth and child developmental problems. While growing evidence highlights potential neurotoxic effects in children, few studies have examined the combined impact of multiple phthalates and newly introduced replacement chemicals. In this study, we included 199 mothe

Micronutrient powder (MNP) can reduce iron deficiency in young children, which has been well established in efficacy trials. However, the cost of different delivery platforms has not been determined. We calculated the cost and cost-efficiency of distributed MNP through community-based mechanisms and in health facilities in a primarily rural district in Uganda. An endline survey (n = 1072) identified reach and adherence. During the 9-month pilot, 37,458 (community platform) and 12,390 (facility platform) packets of MNP were distributed. Each packet consisted of 30 MNP sachets. In 2016, total co

We investigated the effect of an antenatal lifestyle intervention of a low-glycaemic index (GI) diet and physical activity on energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DIITM) and explored its relationship with maternal and child health in women with overweight and obesity. This was a secondary analysis of 434 mother-child pairs from the Pregnancy Exercise and Nutrition Study (PEARS) trial in Dublin, Ireland. E-DIITM scores were calculated for early (10-16 weeks) and late (28 weeks) pregnancy. Outcomes included lipids, inflammation markers, insulin resistance, mode of delivery, infant size,…

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment affects social functioning in the general adult population. However, how child abuse affects functional disability in adulthood remains unknown. Thus, we investigated the correlation between child abuse, depressive symptoms, cognitive complaints, and functional disability in adult community volunteers.
METHODS: Participants (N = 556) completed the Child Abuse and Trauma Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, and Sheehan Disability Scale. Multiple regression analyses and structural equation modeling

The purpose of our study was to analyze reports of the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) of suspected overingestion of ethanol from mouthrinses by children younger than 6 years of age between 1989 and 1994. Annual incidence rates of reported ethanol exposures attributed to mouthrinses were calculated. Lethal and toxic amounts of several mouthrinses were calculated using peak blood ethanol concentrations of 500 and 50 mg per 100 mL, respectively. In 1994, there were 2937 calls reported by poison control centers related to ethanol-containing mouthrinses, an estimated inciden

In order to investigate the relationship between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection and protein-energy malnutrition (PEM), all 101 malnourished children who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics of the National University Hospital between February and July of 1989 (median age = 2.5 years), and who were accompanied by their mother were screened for HIV-1 antibody. Mothers were also screened and interviewed. Mother-child pairs were followed-up 2 years later to determine mortality and clinical status. Fourteen per cent of malnourished children were HIV-1 seropositive. Only one

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health difficulties are common and, if untreated, are associated with long-term adverse child outcomes. Substantial evidence gaps exist in group-based and parent-infant interventions for perinatal mental health difficulties. Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P) groups have shown preliminary efficacy, although previous studies were methodologically weak or not specific to relevant populations. This study aimed to evaluate whether the hybrid delivery of COS-P plus treatment-as-usual reduces psychopathology in birthing parents accessing National Health Service communi

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and wife abuse are linked. Studies indicate 30% to 59% of mothers of children reported for child abuse also are battered. In homes where domestic violence occurs, the children are at increased risk of physical abuse or neglect. Children who witness battering of their mothers are at risk for psychosocial sequelae including developmental delays and posttraumatic stress disorder.
OBJECTIVE: To determine pediatric emergency medicine fellows' level of preparedness to respond to battered mothers, and to assess obstacles and attitudinal barriers to their effective response.

The goal of this study was to examine the association of physical and sexual abuse in childhood, poverty, parental substance abuse problems and parental psychiatric problems with disability due to physical health problems in a community sample of women. We included 4,243 women aged 15-64 years from the Ontario Mental Health Supplement in the analysis. The associations were tested by multiple logistic regression. Ten percent of women had a disability due to physical health problems. Among women with a disability, approximately 40% had been abused while growing up. After controlling for income a

INTRODUCTION: It is a proven fact that women are affected by poor mental health predominantly in the postnatal period. This is authenticated by the use of a validated and tested Edinburg Postnatal Depression scale (EPNS), which is a simple tool to measure depression among women after delivery by posing 10 questions and this is also validated in Odia language. Odisha has made laudable progress in delivering Maternal and Child Health care to women even in tribal-dominated districts through its robust Comprehensive Obstetrics care network restricting home delivery almost to a mere 4%-5% and reduc…

School-based health centers (SBHCs) provide a critical point of access to youth in low-resource communities. By providing a combination of primary care, reproductive health, mental health, vision, dental, and nutrition services, SBHCs improve the health, wellbeing, and academic achievement of the students they serve. SBHCs operate in collaboration with schools and community primary care providers to optimize the management of chronic health conditions and other health concerns that may result in suboptimal scholastic achievement and other quality of life measures. OBJECTIVE: Preparing and responding to the needs of children during public health emergencies continues to be challenging. The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of a tabletop exercise in initiating pediatric preparedness strategies and assessing the impact of the exercise on participants' understanding of and confidence in their roles during pediatric public health emergencies.
METHODS: A tabletop exercise was developed to simulate a public health emergency scenario involving smallpox in a child, with subsequent spread to multiple states. During the exercise, participants dis
