Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of general health checks in adults: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: General health checks (GHCs) are widely used for disease prevention, however, their clinical effectiveness, psychological impact, and economic value remain debated. This study systematically evaluated the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of GHCs in adults to update and expand upon existing reviews. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, SinoMed, CNKI, and WanFang from inception to July 1, 2025. Three reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, and two reviewers assessed full-text eligibility, with disagreements resolved thro

Prevalence of Occupational Voice Disorder Among Teachers of Kathmandu District, Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that occur in a child's life between birth and 18 years. Exposure to one or more ACE has been linked to participation in risky health behaviors and the experience of chronic health conditions in adulthood. The risk for poor outcomes increases as the number of ACEs experienced increases. This research investigates rural-urban differences in exposure to ACEs using a sample from a representative southern US state, South Carolina. METHODS: Using data from the 2014-2015 South Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

Comparing BEST-CLI Participants with Patients Treated at a Tertiary Center Serving a Regional-Remote Population.

BACKGROUND: The BEST-CLI trial established the first large-scale evidence for revascularization of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), but its restrictive eligibility criteria may limit applicability to regional-remote populations. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated BEST-CLI eligibility in a consecutive cohort of patients treated for CLTI at a tertiary vascular center serving the North Queensland regional and remote Australian population. Trial criteria were applied independently by 2 vascular surgeons. The primary outcome was the composite of all-cause mortality and major adverse li

The Association of COVID-19 With Acute Kidney Injury Independent of Severity of Illness: A Multicenter Cohort Study.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with acute kidney injury (AKI), it is unclear whether this association is independent of traditional risk factors such as hypotension, nephrotoxin exposure, and inflammation. We tested the independent association of COVID-19 with AKI. STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter, observational, cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Patients admitted to 1 of 6 hospitals within the Yale New Haven Health System between March 10, 2020, and August 31, 2020, with results for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-C

Effects of Excessive Body Fat Accumulation on Long-Term Outcomes During Peritoneal Dialysis.

Background:Significant body fat accumulation is an inevitable but potentially serious problem in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Whether excessive fat gain predicts long-term outcomes in these patients remains unknown. Methods:In this prospective cohort study (n = 297), the associations of excessive fat accumulation with patient survival and PD failure rate were examined. Based on dialysis duration at the time of study enrollment, patients were divided into short- (< 2 years) and long-term (> 2 years) groups. Body weight (BW) and body composition were measured twice, 12.8 ± 4.6 months apart.

Do race/ethnicity or socioeconomic status affect why we place ear tubes in children?

INTRODUCTION: Despite recent concerns about potential overuse of tympanostomy tube (TT) placement to treat otitis media in children, utilization of this common procedure in the U.S. has been shown to be relatively less common among minority children. It is not known if the indications for TT differ by child race/ethnicity and/or socioeconomic status (SES). Our objective is to analyze the association of patient- and neighborhood-level demographics and SES with clinical indications for TT. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of children who underwent TT at single urban academic t

Management of mineral metabolism in hemodialysis patients: discrepancy between interventions and perceived causes of failure.

BACKGROUND: Mineral and bone disorders (MBD) in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) are a major clinical complication. Current therapeutic strategies do not attain the expected results. The Italian audit on mineral metabolism was implemented to investigate MBD management through a "patient-oriented" approach. METHODS: Clinical and laboratory data pertinent to MBD from 509 prevalent adult patients on chronic HD were recorded and examined (audit), after which individual strategies were elaborated to improve MBD control. Their effectiveness was evaluated 6 months after the audit (Post-6). RES

Education programmes for people with chronic kidney disease and diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to complex regimens for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes is often poor. Interventions to enhance adherence require intensive education and behavioural counselling. However, whether the existing evidence is scientifically rigorous and can support recommendations for routine use of educational programmes in people with CKD and diabetes is still unknown. This is an update of a review first published in 2011. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of education programmes for people with CKD and diabetes. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane

A systematic review and meta-analysis of sex- and gender-based differences in presentation severity and outcomes in adults undergoing major vascular surgery.

BACKGROUND: Studies have investigated the effects of gender on vascular surgery care. However, to the best of our knowledge, no comprehensive synthesis of the literature has been performed on the presentation severity and postoperative outcomes for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), carotid artery stenosis (CAS), peripheral artery disease (PAD), and type B aortic dissection (TBAD). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the sex and gender differences in the presentation severity and outcomes for patients who had undergone major vascular surgery.
