PURPOSE: The purposes of this study are to evaluate the retrobulbar circulation in progressive nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and to assess changes in blood flow after optic nerve sheath decompression (ONSD).
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with progressive NAION were studied using color Doppler imaging (CDI) before and after ONSD. Blood flow velocities and vascular resistance were calculated for the ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery, and posterior ciliary arteries in each eye. Contralateral eyes served as the control group.

We report four patients with functionally significant inadvertent cyclodialysis cleft. In three, the cleft followed uneventful extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation; in the fourth, blunt trauma with hyphema. Ocular hypotony resolved in three patients with medical therapy; the fourth required argon laser photocoagulation. Causes, clinical findings, and treatment of inadvertent cyclodialysis cleft are reviewed.

The vascular effects of fasciculin and physostigmine, two acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, were studied with radioactively labelled microspheres in the rabbit eye. In addition, the effects on the intraocular pressure, pupil size and the aqueous humor protein concentration were determined. Both drugs were injected intracamerally in pentobarbital anesthetized and indomethacin pretreated animals. Fasciculin injected in a dose of 0.5 micrograms (0.7 x 10(-10)M) reduced blood flow in the anterior uvea as determined 30 and 60 min after injection. Higher doses had inconsistent effects.
