Foam sclerotherapy compared with liquid sclerotherapy for the treatment of lower extremity varicose veins: A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is a continued discussion on which is the best sclerosant to treat lower extremity varicose veins. Therefore, we did this meta-analysis to determine that foam sclerotherapy versus liquid sclerotherapy, which could perform better in the treatment of lower extremity varicose veins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We independently searched 5 databases from inception to February 1, 2019, for randomized controlled trials and prospective controlled trials for comparing foam sclerotherapy and liquid sclerotherapy for the treatment of lower extremity varicose veins. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scal

Harmonising data collection from osteoarthritis studies to enable stratification: recommendations on core data collection from an Arthritis Research UK clinical studies group.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of OA by stratifying for commonly used and novel therapies will likely improve the range of effective therapy options and their rational deployment in this undertreated, chronic disease. In order to develop appropriate datasets for conducting post hoc analyses to inform approaches to stratification for OA, our aim was to develop recommendations on the minimum data that should be recorded at baseline in all future OA interventional and observational studies. METHODS: An Arthritis Research UK study group comprised of 32 experts used a Delphi-style approach supported by a li

Preventing post-ERCP pancreatitis: where are we?

Acute pancreatitis still represents the most common complication after procedures involving Vater's papilla; the reported incidence of this complication varies from less than 1% up to 40%. Attempts at preventing post-ERCP pancreatitis have been carried out using technical measures, pharmacological prophylaxis, or patient selection. Balloon sphincter of Oddi dilatation, difficult papillary cannulation, pancreatic sphincterotomy and multiple pancreatic duct injections have been found to be risk factors for postprocedure pancreatitis. Therefore, technique-related prevention of post-ERCP pancreati

VEGF Trap-Eye for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects > 14 million individuals worldwide. Although 90% of patients with AMD have the dry form, neovascular AMD accounts for the vast majority of patients who develop legal blindness. Until recently, few treatment options existed for treatment of neovascular AMD. The advent of anti-VEGF therapy has significantly improved the safe and effective treatment of neovascular AMD. In addition to two anti-VEGF drugs currently in widespread use, ranibizumab and bevacizumab, a number of medications that interrupt angiogenesis are currently under investi

Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Duration: A Review of Current Available Evidence.

PURPOSE: Multiple regimens of antiplatelet and anticoagulation therapy have been used in the past in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Later trials of PCI stenting demonstrated the efficacy of dual-antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) in reducing stent- and non-stent-related thrombotic events in this specific population. Nonetheless, the required duration of DAPT has not yet been elucidated. In this article we sought to identify various randomized clinical trials (RCTs), pooled analyses, meta-analyses, and data pertaining to the optimal duration of DAPT and attempt some reco

Preliminary stop of the TOPical Imiquimod treatment of high-grade Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (TOPIC) trial.

The "TOPical Imiquimod treatment of high-grade Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia" (TOPIC) trial was stopped preliminary, due to lagging inclusions. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment efficacy and clinical applicability of imiquimod 5% cream in high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). The lagging inclusions were mainly due to a strong patient preference for either of the two treatment modalities. This prompted us to initiate a new study on the same subject, with a non-randomized, open-label design: the 'TOPical Imiquimod treatment of high-grade Cervical intraepithelial neop

Metabolic health effects of the timing of lifestyle behaviours in a combined lifestyle intervention in adults who have obesity or are overweight with complications: protocol for a two-armed, cluster-randomized, pragmatic trial-a TIMED study.

BACKGROUND: As done in combined lifestyle interventions (CLI), a combination of physical activity, diet, and sleep interventions is effective in reducing body mass index (BMI) and hyperglycaemia. The timing of the behaviours during the day may also affect metabolic health, due to individuals' circadian rhythms, but the impact of this is not well known. Thus, the inclusion of education on the timing of lifestyle behaviours may be an important addition to CLIs. Therefore, we aim to investigate the metabolic health effect of adding education on timing of lifestyle behaviours to an online CLI amon

No antithrombotic therapy versus single antiplatelet therapy after percutaneous left atrial appendage closure in non-valvular atrial fibrillation: rationale and design of the multicentre, randomised, non-inferiority NAPT-LAAC trial.

The current standard regimen for antithrombotic therapy after percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) recommends long-term use of antiplatelet agents. However, this recommendation is not supported by sufficient clinical evidence. Since LAAC is a treatment option for managing patients at high risk of bleeding, it is necessary to clarify whether long-term antiplatelet therapy is truly required after LAAC. The Non-Antithrombotic Versus. Single antiPlatelet Therapy Following Left Atrial Appendage Closure (NAPT-LAAC) trial, a prospe

Revisiting cell and gene therapies in Huntington's disease.

Neurodegenerative movement disorders, such as Huntington's disease (HD), share a progressive and relentless course with increasing motor disability, linked with neuropsychiatric impairment. These diseases exhibit diverse pathophysiological processes and are a topic of intense experimental and clinical research due to the lack of therapeutic options. Restorative therapies are promising approaches with the potential to restore brain circuits. However, there were less compelling results in the few clinical trials. In this review, we discuss cell replacement therapies applied to animal models and
