Predictors and Session-Specific Effects of Metacognitive Training for Depression (D-MCT).

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive biases contribute to symptoms of depression in both its primary diagnosis and comorbid expressions. Exploring the module-specific effects of Metacognitive Training for Depression (D-MCT) in patients with comorbid depression offers valuable insights into how the various D-MCT modules address shared mechanisms, paving the way for a better understanding of how it works for these patients. METHOD: Participants with primarily comorbid depression were recruited on a specialized ward for OCD and anxiety-related disorders (N = 108). The study investigated the session-specific eff

Exosomes: Mechanisms, Diagnosis, and Therapeutic Progress in Vascular Cognitive Impairment.

Vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) is a cognitive impairment syndrome triggered by cerebrovascular lesions and their associated risk factors, representing the second most prevalent cognitive disorder after Alzheimer's disease (AD). Currently, there are no disease-modifying therapies available for VCID. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the study of exosomes in the context of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). Given the shared pathophysiological features and underlying heterogeneity between VCID and neurodegenerative disorders, it is hypothesized that exosomes

The NLRP3 inflammasome is a potential mechanism and therapeutic target for perioperative neurocognitive disorders.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs) are frequent complications associated with cognitive impairment during the perioperative period, including acute postoperative delirium and long-lasting postoperative cognitive dysfunction. There are some risk factors for PNDs, such as age, surgical trauma, anesthetics, and the health of the patient, but the underlying mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Pyroptosis is a form of programmed cell death that is mediated by the gasdermin protein and is involved in cognitive dysfunction disorders. The canonical pathway induced by nucleotide oligomer

[Why and how evaluating driving abilities in patients with neurodegenerative diseases?].

Many studies have shown that individuals with neurodegenerative diseases are a risk factor for being involved in a traffic accident. However, driving is critical for social integration and independence in daily life. Lack of consensus and standardized assessment of driving abilities in these patients is problematic. This article summarizes the various multidisciplinary evaluations proposed, their limits, and the societal issues raised by such an evaluation. Several neuropsychological theoretical models have attempted to describe the cognitive processes involved in car driving. Moreover, severa

Prospects of intranasal insulin for correction of cognitive impairments, in particular those associated with diabetes mellitus.

Despite the well-studied effect of insulin in peripheral tissues, its role in functioning of the central nervous system is much less understood. The effects of insulin in the brain are extremely diverse: insulin plays an important role in neuron growth and differentiation, affects higher cognitive functions (in particular, the formation of long-term memory), and also has a neuroprotective effect. Both peripheral and central insulin resistance as well as absolute insulin deficiency impairs the functional activity of neurons and neurogenesis. Several studies have investigated intranasal administ

Cognitive dysfunction in corticobasal degeneration.

Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) was originally described as a distinct clinicopathological entity in 1967. Since then, different phenotypic presentations have emerged as possible manifestations of CBD histopathological findings. In addition, pathophysiological findings and the molecular basis have been delineated and several aspects of its cognitive manifestations have been clarified. Thus, not only the spectrum of what is currently designated as CBD has expanded, but overlap with other degenerative and even secondary disorders has made clinical diagnostic certainty even more challenging in th

Emotional intelligence and impulsive aggression in Intermittent Explosive Disorder.

Emotional intelligence (EI) relates to one's ability to recognize and understand emotional information and then, to use it for planning and self-management. Given evidence of abnormalities of emotional processing in impulsively aggressive individuals, we hypothesized that EI would be reduced in subjects with Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED: n = 43) compared with healthy (n = 44) and psychiatric (n = 44) controls. The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) was used to assess both Experiential EI and Strategic EI. Strategic, but not Experiential, EI was lower in IED compa

Video game therapy for emotional regulation and impulsivity control in a series of treated cases with bulimia nervosa.

Although standard psychological treatments have been successful in treating several core features in eating disorders (ED), other characteristics such as emotional regulation or impulsivity appear to be more resistant to change. There is a growing body of evidence to support the efficacy of cognitive remediation for cognitive and emotional difficulties in ED. Playmancer/ Islands is a video game (VG) designed to specifically treat mental disorders, characterized by problems in impulse control. The objective of the game is to increase self-control over emotions, decision making and behaviours. T

Chronic somatoparaphrenia: a follow-up study on two clinical cases.

Somatoparaphrenia consists in abnormal or bizarre verbal reports about some parts of the body. Such a pathological condition usually lasts for days or weeks and is variably associated with other cognitive defects. In the present paper we describe exceptionally long-lasting somatoparaphrenia in two focal brain-damaged patients: GA who had a right hemorrhagic fronto-parieto-temporal stroke and AC who developed a left ischemic parieto-occipital lesion. The presence and severity of somatoparaphrenia did not change in either patient during a 2-year follow-up, whereas the two patients showed differe

Cognitive-behavioral therapy of delusions: mental imagery within a goal-directed framework.

Central to psychotic disorders, delusions are associated with disability and often respond inadequately to pharmacotherapy. Cognitive-behavioral treatments have been developed over the last 20 years that successfully address delusions. However, meta-analyses suggest only a modest improvement in psychotic symptoms. Because delusions share considerable overlap with anxiety, adapting principles and techniques that have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of anxiety disorders might improve the impact of cognitive-behavioral treatment of delusions. We report a case illustrating a cognitive-behav

Deep brain stimulation and the role of the neuropsychologist.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) now plays an important role in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, tremor, and dystonia. DBS may also have a role in the treatment of other disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette's syndrome, and depression. The neuropsychologist plays a crucial role in patient selection, follow-up, and management of intra-operative and post-operative effects (Pillon, 2002; Saint-Cyr & Trepanier, 2000). There is now emerging evidence that DBS can induce mood, cognitive, and behavioral changes. These changes can have dramatic effects on patient outcome. There hav

Cognitive and motor assessment in autopsy-proven corticobasal degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features of autopsy-proven corticobasal degeneration (CBD). METHODS: We evaluated symptoms, signs, and neuropsychological deficits longitudinally in 15 patients with autopsy-proven CBD and related these observations directly to the neuroanatomic distribution of disease. RESULTS: At presentation, a specific pattern of cognitive impairment was evident, whereas an extrapyramidal motor abnormality was present in less than half of the patients. Follow-up examination revealed persistent impairment of apraxia and executive functioning, worsening language perfo

Types of psychotherapy for pathological gamblers.

Several types of psychotherapy are currently used to treat pathological gamblers. These include Gambler's Anonymous, cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and family therapy. Research into which types of psychotherapy are the most effective for pathological gambling is limited but is a growing area of study. Group therapy, namely Gambler's Anonymous, provides peer support and structure. Cognitive behavior therapy aims to identify and correct cognitive distortions about gambling. Psychodynamic psychotherapy can help recovering gamblers address core conflicts a

Core beliefs in anorexic and bulimic women.

There is research evidence to suggest the presence of dysfunctional cognitions in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa that are not related to food, weight, or shape. These maladaptive cognitions have not been addressed by the conventional cognitive behavioral models of etiology or therapy. This study aimed to assess the impact of unhealthy core beliefs on eating disorders and their symptoms. Twenty restricting anorexics, 10 bulimic anorexics, 27 bulimics, and 23 normal controls completed Young's Schema Questionnaire. Eating behaviors and attitudes were also measured. The results indicate that

Autism and Dyslexia: A Glance Over 25 Years of Research.

AUTISM AND DYSLEXIA ARE WRONGLY CLASSIFIED AS CHILDHOOD DISORDERS: They are lifelong and therefore have to be studied in adults as well as in children. Individual variability is enormous, and, as a result, behavioral diagnosis remains problematic. The study of the underlying cognitive abilities in autism and dyslexia has acted as a gateway for the emergence of developmental cognitive neuroscience.

The Impact of Personality Pathology on Treatment Outcome in Late-life Panic Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid personality disorders are assumed to negatively interfere with the treatment outcome of affective disorders. Data on late-life panic disorder remain unknown. We examined the association of personality pathology and treatment outcome related to age and treatment modality. METHODS: An observational study on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder with agoraphobia among patients 18 to 74 years of age and randomized controlled comparison of paroxetine and CBT in older patients (60 y of age or older) were performed. The diagnosis of panic dis

Cognitive and Mental Health Profiles of Binge-Eating Adults with and Without Comorbid Addictive Behaviors.

Background: Binge eating is a disordered eating behavior implicated in eating disorders such as binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa; it significantly affects an individual's physical and mental health. Recent studies suggest shared neurobiological mechanisms between binge eating and addictive behaviors. Comorbid addiction (e.g., substance use disorders and behavioral addictions) is also frequently reported in binge-eating patients. However, it is still unclear whether binge-eating individuals with comorbid addictions differ in their cognitive and mental health characteristics from

A comprehensive review of transcranial magnetic stimulation in secondary dementia.

Although primary degenerative diseases are the main cause of dementia, a non-negligible proportion of patients is affected by a secondary and potentially treatable cognitive disorder. Therefore, diagnostic tools able to early identify and monitor them and to predict the response to treatment are needed. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive neurophysiological technique capable of evaluating in vivo and in "real time" the motor areas, the cortico-spinal tract, and the neurotransmission pathways in several neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, including cognitive impai
