Rain and windchill as factors in the occurrence of pneumonia in sheep.

A computerised information retrieval system of abattoir pathology and meteorological data has been used to investigate the effect of prevailing weather conditions on the occurrence of pleurisy and pneumonia in the sheep population of Northern Ireland. Significant correlation coefficients were found between the percentage condemnations due to pleurisy and pneumonia in sheep and rainfall, windspeed, temperature and humidity. The most significant correlation was found with windspeed. The paper describes the calculation of a new meteorological variable, the rain/windchill factor. Very highly signi

[Rare localizations of digestive adenocarcinoma in children. Apropos of 2 cases].

The authors report two cases of adenocarcinoma of the digestive system in children both of which were located in unusual sites. A child of 9 years old had an adenocarcinoma of the small bowel and a boy of 16 years who was known to have a long-standing hiatus hernia developed an adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. In children these tumors have some characteristic features. They develop on a preexisting lesion. Evolution is rapid. From the pathological point of view, anaplasic and colloide patterns are frequent.

Real-time Doppler color flow mapping for detection of patent ductus arteriosus.

In this study, ultrasound Doppler color flow mapping systems were utilized to examine flow in the pulmonary artery in 31 premature and term infants (aged 4 hours to 9 months) with patent ductus arteriosus accompanying respiratory distress syndrome, as an isolated lesion, or with patent ductus in association with other cyanotic or acyanotic congenital heart disorders. The flow mapping patterns were compared with those of a control population of 15 infants who did not have patent ductus arteriosus. In unconstricted ductus arteriosus, the flow from the aorta into the pulmonary artery was detected

Orbital inflammation, myositis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.

A 39-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) experienced three episodes of acute orbital inflammation, a primary feature of each being a markedly enlarged extraocular muscle (myositis). The muscles of the upper trunk were concomitantly inflamed, and full-thickness skin and muscle biopsy specimens demonstrated an inflammatory myositis. The case demonstrates that orbital proptosis and extraocular myositis can be features of SLE.

Cysticercosis of the nervous system.

In most Western countries cysticercosis is a rare disease and may at times cause serious diagnostic difficulties, but in South Africa, parts of India, Eastern Europe and South America it is fairly common and frequently features in differential diagnosis in its varying clinical forms. With the advent of computed tomography, diagnosis of the disease, particularly the asymptomatic forms, has become more frequent. As in other parts of the world, the true incidence of this disease in South Africa is unknown, as many more cases are encountered than are recorded and asymptomatic infestation is common

Multimodal Cardiac Imaging in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: From Clinical Suspicion to Diagnosis in Clinical Practice.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by immune dysregulation and systemic inflammation, with the cardiovascular (CV) system representing a major yet frequently under-recognized target. Cardiac involvement spans from subclinical myocardial inflammation to overt pericardial disease, myocarditis, valvular abnormalities, coronary microvascular dysfunction, and accelerated atherosclerosis. Given that CV disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in SLE, early detection of silent cardiac injury is crucial. Aim: This review aims

Integrated Network Analysis Suggests an miR-21/MMP/VEGF-Associated Regulatory Axis in Gastric Cancer.

BACKGROUND, AIMS: Gastric cancer (GC) pathogenesis involves complex molecular interactions that remain incompletely understood at a biological systems level. While microRNA-21 (miR-21), matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been individually implicated in GC, their integrated role as a coordinated regulatory network remains uncharacterized. And we aim to reveal novel biology systems level insights into the miR-21/MMP/VEGF regulatory axis. METHODS: In this study, 27 tumor and matched adjacent noncancerous tissues in GC patients were analyzed. Expr

Exploring glutathione transferase and Cathepsin L-like proteinase for designing of epitopes-based vaccine against Fasciola hepatica by immunoinformatics and biophysics studies.

Fasciolosis is a zoonotic infection and is considered a developing deserted tropical illness threatening ruminant productivity and causing financial losses. Herein, we applied immunoinformatics and biophysics studies to develop an epitopes vaccine against Fasciola hepatica using glutathione transferase and Cathepsin L-like proteinase as possible vaccine candidates. Using the selected proteins, B- and T-cell epitopes were predicted. After epitopes prediction, the epitopes were clarified over immunoinformatics screening, and only five epitopes, EFGRWQQEKCTIDLD, RRNIWEKNVKHIQEH, FKAKYLTEMSRASDI,

A hybrid deep learning and residual connection-based architecture for intrusion detection in autonomous vehicles.

The emergence of Autonomous and Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) has transformed the automotive landscape drastically over the past few years by offering enhanced features in the vehicles for drivers' safety and convenience. These developments have introduced various features in AVs i.e., lane-keeping, cruise control, etc. These features are mainly powered by the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) that communicate using the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus protocol. The components in the AVs communicate with each other by sending and receiving messages via the CAN bus. However, despite incre

Disparate language and model effects on AI-based translation and recognition of genetic conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly prevalent. Patients and clinicians may use AI-based tools in many different languages. OBJECTIVE: To investigate AI translation tools for descriptions of genetic conditions and how AI identification of genetic conditions is affected by translations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used Neural machine translation (NMT) and large language-model (LLM) translation to translate descriptions of 40 genetic conditions into 191 and 93 languages, respectively. Excluding translations retaining English medical terms verbatim, we respectively focused o

Distributed Artificial Intelligence for Organizational and Behavioral Recognition of Bees and Ants.

Scientific studies have demonstrated how certain insect species can be used as bioindicators and reverse environmental degradation through their behavior and organization. Studying these species involves capturing and extracting hundreds of insects from a colony for subsequent study, analysis, and observation. This allows researchers to classify the individuals and also determine the organizational structure and behavioral patterns of the insects within colonies. The miniaturization of hardware devices for data and image acquisition, coupled with new Artificial Intelligence techniques such as

Diagnostic performance of point-of-care ultrasound for pediatric skull fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

ObjectivePediatric head trauma is common, but computed tomography exposes children to ionizing radiation. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound for pediatric skull fractures and clarified its role as an adjunct to clinical assessment rather than a replacement for computed tomography when intracranial injury is suspected.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review and bivariate random-effects diagnostic test meta-analysis guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 statement and registered in

An AI-driven framework for diabetic foot ulcer classification, segmentation, and depth estimation.

Diabetic Foot Ulcers are a severe complication of diabetes that can lead to infection, amputation, and increased mortality, making timely and objective assessment essential. Conventional evaluation relies primarily on visual inspection and manual measurements, which are often subjective and inconsistent. This paper presents a comprehensive automated deep learning-based framework for DFU assessment that integrates classification, segmentation, relative depth estimation, and explainability. An EfficientNet-B0 model is employed for binary classification of ulcerated versus healthy skin. At the sa

Control strategies for high degree-of-freedom assistive devices using non-invasive body-machine interfaces: a survey and framework.

PURPOSE: Body-machine interfaces (BoMIs) provide individuals with movement impairments the ability to control assistive devices using signals from their body movements in a non-invasive and reliable way. However, high degree-of-freedom (DOF) assistive devices such as robotic manipulators require the user to control several device commands simultaneously and intuitively, which has resulted in limited adoption of these devices by the intended user population. In this review, we survey recent approaches for controlling high-DOF systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on a systematic literature sea
