Social protection as a strategy for HIV prevention, education promotion and child marriage reduction among adolescents: a cross-sectional population-based study in Lesotho.

BACKGROUND: Lesotho's government has shown consistent efforts to implement social protection programmes. However, while recent evidence established a positive causal relationship between some of these programmes and food security there is little evidence on the extent to which these initiatives are associated with better educational and sexual and reproductive health outcomes among vulnerable adolescents in Lesotho. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The study uses cross-sectional, nationally representative data from the 2018 Lesotho Violence Against Children and Youth Survey. Our research examined the as

Anorectal Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections in women with and without reported anal sex and sex workers in sexual health centres in the Netherlands: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Control of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection (gonorrhoea) depends on effective testing strategies. Anorectal testing in women is often done on indication of anal sex; however, anorectal infections are seen with and without anal exposure, possibly caused by autoinoculation. This study aims to enhance understanding of anorectal infections in women, by identifying risk factors for anorectal diagnosis. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study we used national surveillance data from Dutch sexual health centres from Jan 1, 2016, to Dec 31, 2021. We included cisgender women having sex w

Mental health, substance use, and risky sexual behaviors among women living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Risky sexual behavior has been explored in women living with HIV (WLHIV) internationally but is not well studied in WLHIV in the United States (U.S.). This merits further investigation due to the negative reproductive and HIV health outcomes associated with risky sexual behavior, such as the increased risk for HIV transmission and infertility from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The aims of this study are to (1) describe sexual behaviors in a cohort of WLHIV in Florida, (2) determine whether demographic characteristics, substance use, and mental health symptoms are associ

What has women's reproductive health decision-making capacity and other factors got to do with pregnancy termination in sub-Saharan Africa? evidence from 27 cross-sectional surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy termination is one of the key issues that require urgent attention in achieving the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages. The reproductive health decision-making (RHDM) capacity of women plays a key role in their reproductive health outcomes, including pregnancy termination. Based on this premise, we examined RHDM capacity and pregnancy termination among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We pooled data from the women's files of the most recent Demograp

The Effectiveness of HIV Prevention Interventions in Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Ethnic Minority Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surveys in the United States and Europe have shown a plateau of new HIV cases, with certain regions and populations disproportionately affected by the disease. Ethnic minority women and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups are disproportionately affected by HIV. Previous reviews have focused on prevention interventions targeting ethnic minority men who have sex with men, have not accounted for socioeconomic status, or have included only interventions carried out in clinical settings. OBJECTIVES: To review and assess the effectiveness of HIV prevention interventions targeting soc

Patterns of Engagement With the mHealth Component of a Sexual and Reproductive Health Risk Reduction Intervention for Young People With Depression: Latent Trajectory Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions are increasingly used to reduce risk and promote health in real-time, real-life contexts. Engagement is critical for effectiveness of mHealth interventions but may be challenging for young people experiencing depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE: We examined engagement with the 4-week mHealth component of a counseling-plus-mHealth intervention to reduce sexual and reproductive health (SRH) risk among young people with depression (Momentary Affect Regulation - Safer Sex Intervention [MARSSI]) to determine (1) mHealth engagement patterns over time and

Prevalence of anal dysplasia and HPV genotypes in gynecology patients: The ANGY cross-sectional prospective clinical study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) are highly prevalent in the sexually active populations, with a significant burden in terms of health and psychological cost in all class ages. High-risk (HR) HPV genotypes are associated with anogenital dysplasia and cancers, and anal HPV-induced cancer is increasingly observed in women. The interactions of HPV genotype's between the anus and the cervix, and the subsequent occurrence of dysplasia remains unclear. This clinical study set out to test the hypothesis that risk factors for anal HR-HPV and dysplasia may differ in women with or without cervic

Contraceptive use in Latin America and the Caribbean with a focus on long-acting reversible contraceptives: prevalence and inequalities in 23 countries.

BACKGROUND: The rise in contraceptive use has largely been driven by short-acting methods of contraception, despite the high effectiveness of long-acting reversible contraceptives. Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have made important progress increasing the use of modern contraceptives, but important inequalities remain. We assessed the prevalence and demand for modern contraceptive use in Latin America and the Caribbean with data from national health surveys. METHODS: Our data sources included demographic and health surveys, multiple indicator cluster surveys, and reprodu

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Awareness Is Low Among Heterosexual People of Color Who Might Benefit From PrEP in Philadelphia.

INTRODUCTION: We assessed awareness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among HIV-negative Black and Latinx persons living in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Statistical Area. METHODS: Using chi-square and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, we analyzed data from the 2016 heterosexual cycle of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance system to assess how sociodemographic factors, health care utilization, and risk behaviors affected PrEP awareness. RESULTS: Participants (n = 472) were predominately Black, non-Hispanic (88.1%) with a median age of 41.5 years. Most participants reported having a usual source

Contraceptive options for women in selected circumstances.

Young women under the age of 16 years require special consideration when requesting contraception. Such young women can give voluntary consent, which enables prescription and supply providing that the practitioner has determined that the minor is sufficiently mature to understand the details of the method and its use. All reversible methods may be appropriate but it is necessary to provide information in a form that is fully understood. For women with pre-existing medical conditions including obesity, the benefits and risks of the use of individual methods needs to be weighed against the risks

Gender differences and other factors associated with HIV testing in a national sample of active drug injectors.

Gender, health, HIV risk, and demographic factors were examined with chi-square and logistic regression analyses to assess which of these factors are most predictive of active injection drug users' (IDUs') getting tested for HIV. Analyses were based on 36,898 IDUs recruited to participate in a nationwide multisite HIV prevention project. Women IDUs were recently tested (prior 6 months) more than men IDUs. Health factors, particularly for women IDUs, predicted who got tested for HIV more than risk or demographic factors. HIV testing usually occurred when disease symptomatology developed, after
