BACKGROUND: It is estimated that about 600,000 children die annually as a result of severe dehydrating diarrhea caused by rotaviruses. The virus is a double stranded RNA (dsRNA) virus with 11 segments. Group A rotaviruses show a characteristic 4-2-3-2 pattern following electrophoresis. The VP6 subgroups, I and II exist. This work was carried out to study the prevalence of rotavirus infection among children 0-5 years with diarrhea in Kano, and to determine the circulating subgroups and electropherotypes and of the rotavirus isolates.

Electron cryotomography was used to analyze the structure of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. OBJECTIVE: We describe extensively the multilevel oblique corpectomy technique with its advantages, disadvantages, indications, and biomechanical effects. This procedure is an alternative to the anterior corpectomy.
METHODS: Multilevel oblique corpectomy can be indicated in spondylotic myelopathy, whether or not it is associated with unilateral radiculopathy. Certain conditions must be fulfilled: anterior compression must be predominant, the spine must be kyphotic or straight, preoperative instability has to be excluded, and intervertebral discs have to be dehydrated and collapsed.

In this study we examined the potential role of atherosclerosis in the main arteries supplying blood to the carotid body in the organ's morphological degradation with age. We addressed this issue by comparing the ultrastructural picture of carotid bodies and of fragments of the carotid artery bifurcation in two age-extreme groups of rats: young - 3 months old and senescent - 24 months old. Tissues were excised under surgical anesthesia, fixed in aldehydes, and processed for transmission electron microscopy. We found that the old carotid body parenchyma exhibited profound degenerative changes.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a method of organotypic cerebral culture. So as to pave the way for building some neurodegenerative disease models.
METHODS: Organotypic cerebral cultures were prepared from prefrontal brain of neonatal SD rats. After culturing 7 to 14 days, 3 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks, respectively, cerebral slices were fixed, dehydrated and sectioned in cryostat. The sections proceeded with Nissl staining and neurofilament high molecular weight (NFH) immunohistochemical staining. The difference was observed between controls and cultured slices using normal rats as controls.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to perform a detailed morphometric immunohistochemical study of the development of fetal and newborn rat pancreatic islets.
METHODS: Twenty-four pancreases were obtained from 19 and 21-day-old fetal rats, one and 4-day-old newborn rats. They were fixed in buffered neutral formalin, dehydrated and embedded in paraplast. Sections were stained with anti-insulin antibodies. A morphometric study was performed on the pancreatic islets at the Department of Anatomy, King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between 2001 and 2002.
