BACKGROUND: We describe two severe cases of polymorphic eruption of pregnancy associated with dyshidrosis and purpuric lesions.
CASE-REPORT: Two patients, primigravida at 35 and 34 weeks of amenorrhea, were admitted in our department for a severe and itchy eruption. House dust mite (HDM) allergens are the most important triggers for atopic dermatitis. Reducing exposure to these allergens may alleviate clinical symptoms. Chemicals with acaricidal activity have been used to treat upholstered furniture, carpets and bedding with the aim to reduce HDM allergen exposure. These chemicals, by reducing HDM, can decrease the concentration of mite allergens in dust but improvements in clinical symptoms are not always apparent. The harlequin ichthyosis (ichq) mouse mutation arose spontaneously in 1989 in a colony of BALB/cJ mice at The Jackson Laboratory. Affected mice developed thick skin due to formation of compact, orthokeratotic scales that fractured over articular surfaces, secondary to bending. An outbreak of dermatitis occurred among county jail inmates who removed dead fish from the Sacramento River in California after a spill of metam sodium. The spilled chemical decomposes to methylisothiocyanate (MITC), a known skin irritant. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among the inmates and their crew leaders. A total of 180 HIV-positive patients were assessed for seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) and colonization with Malassezia species. Diseased skin of patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis were sampled selectively for Malassezia. In patients without SD, uninvolved skin was sampled. The prevalence of SD was 19%. Of the 34 SD patients, 16 were positive for Malassezia. Of the 146 patients without SD, only 27 were culture positive for Malassezia. Analysis of the largest HIV-positive patient population studied thus far yielded only a weak correlation between SD and Malassezia colonization.

We evaluated two patients with allergic contact dermatitis that resulted from exposure to color film developers. A lichenoid eruption developed in one patient, whereas an eruption more characteristic of an acute spongiotic dermatitis developed in the second patient. Histologic findings in the first case were those of a "lichenoid dermatitis" but with features distinct from classic lichen planus. Carbonless copy paper, or 'no carbon required' (NCR) paper, has often been implicated as the cause of skin, respiratory, or general symptoms, but allergy has been verified in only a few cases. A 43-year-old machinist whose work involved the manufacture of NCR paper developed occupational dermatitis on the hands. On patch testing, both the NCR paper and 1 of the chemicals used to produce the microcapsules of the NCR paper, namely diethylenetriamine (DETA), provoked an allergic reaction.
