Manufacturing Process Changes and Reduced Skin Irritations of an Adhesive Patch Used for Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices.

Adhesives used for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices can cause skin irritations, which sometimes lead to abandonment of the therapy. A previous sensor manufacturing process involved two separate adhesives-one applied to the skin-facing surface of the fabric patch, and a second, ethyl cyanoacrylate-based adhesive, which secured the plastic transmitter housing to the superficial side of the patch. Our current process for attaching the transmitter housing to the fabric patch uses heatstaking, wherein the housing is heated and pressed against the patch with a specialized assembly apparat

Reaction Chemistry to Characterize the Molecular Initiating Event in Skin Sensitization: A Journey to Be Continued.

The publication by the OECD of the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) for skin sensitization has accelerated the development and validation of mechanistic tests and testing strategies to assess the potential of new molecules to trigger skin allergies. The molecular initiating event (MIE) in the AOP is reaction with skin peptides/proteins. It is followed by a number of cellular events. Currently, only one in chemico test to characterize the MIE was proposed to and underwent adoption by the OECD, while two cell-based assays have completed the process. A multitude of further cellular assays is current

Nickel Allergy in Adults in the U.S.: 1962 to 2015.

Although a significant number of nickel dermatitis cases are seen clinically, most cases are neither patch-tested nor captured in the literature, allowing for a prospering hidden nickel epidemic. We present a qualitative review utilizing the public medical library of peer-reviewed US adult nickel dermatitis cases with the goal of identifying regional variations and trends. Between 1962 and 2015, 18,251 adult patients were reported to be sensitized to nickel. The number of articles has exponentially increased over the past 5.5 decades as 4.3% of total cases were reported between the 1960s and 1

Hexavalent and trivalent chromium in leather: What should be done?

Trivalent chromium compounds are used for leather tanning, and chromium may be released during use of leather goods. In certain instances, small amounts of hexavalent chromium can be formed and released. Both trivalent and hexavalent chromium can elicit allergic skin reaction in chromium sensitised subjects, the latter being significantly more potent. Induction of sensitisation only occurs after exposure to hexavalent chromium. A minority of subjects are sensitised to chromium, and in a fraction of these subjects allergic skin reaction have been described after wearing leather shoes or, less f

Dermatotoxicologic clinical solutions: hair dying in hair dye allergic patients?

This article describes how to identify allergic contact dermatitis resulting from hair dye, and outlines interventions and prevention principles for those who wish to continue dyeing their hair despite being allergic. Hair dye chemicals thought to be the most frequent sensitizers are discussed with instructions for health care providers on how to counsel patients about techniques to minimize exposure to allergenic substances. This framework should allow many patients to continue dyeing their hair without experiencing adverse side effects.

Activation of non-sensitizing or low-sensitizing fragrance substances into potent sensitizers - prehaptens and prohaptens.

Experimental and clinical studies have shown that fragrance substances can act as prehaptens or prohaptens. They form allergens that are more potent than the parent substance by activation outside or in the skin via abiotic (chemical and physical factors) and/or biotic activation, thus, increasing the risk of sensitization. In the present review a series of fragrance substances with well documented abiotic and/or biotic activation are given as indicative and illustrative examples of the general problem. Commonly used fragrance substances, also found in essential oils, autoxidize on contact wit

[Clinical symptoms and diagnostic workup of allergic reactions on the oral mucosa].

Contact allergies at the oral mucosa are associated with diverse symptoms. In this article we focus on the contact allergy of delayed type. Oral mucosa changes including stomatitis or lichenoid inflammation can give first evidence for such a contact allergy. Subjective symptoms including pain, burning or dryness of the oral mucosa can be associated with a contact allergy but may also occur in other diseases which need to be excluded. The first step in the diagnosis of a contact allergy is the complete examination of the oral mucosa. Additionally, a careful history of the patient's oral care pr
