Does an ear deformity bring an adverse impact on quality of life of Treacher Collins syndrome individuals?

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable expression in which the ear may or may not be absent or with a malformation. Individuals with TCS suffer social stigma that may affect interaction with their peers. Quality of life instruments obtained through self-perception questionnaires are stigma identification tools and can enable social adjustment of these individuals. This study aims to assess the quality of life of individuals with TCS and to gauge the impacts of ear deformity on the quality of life. Twelve volunteers with a clinical and genetic diagnosis …

Protective effect of adenovirus-mediated erythropoietin expression on the spiral ganglion neurons in the rat inner ear.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of erythropoietin (Epo) and the Epo receptor (Epo‑R) in the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) of the rat inner ear, and to assess the effect of Epo adenovirus vector (Ad‑Epo) on the spontaneous apoptosis of SGNs. A total of 60 ears from 30 healthy neonatal (2‑3 days postnatal) Sprague‑Dawley rats were used to examine the expression of Epo in the SGNs. The rats were divided into three groups: The negative control group, the vector control group [infected with a green fluorescent protein expression vector (Ad‑GFP)] and the Ad‑Epo group (in…

Maturation of bone-conduction transcranial and forehead attenuation using a measure of sound pressure in the ear canal.

OBJECTIVE: Although it is understood that bone-conduction (BC) hearing is different between infants and adults, few studies have attempted to explain why these differences exist. The main objective in this study was to better understand how properties of the developing skull contribute to the maturation of BC sensitivity through an indirect measurement of BC attenuation across the skull. DESIGN: Estimation of transcranial and forehead attenuation of pure-tone BC stimuli was conducted using sound pressure in the ear canal for a transducer placed on the skull ipsi- and contralateral to the prob…

Right-Ear Advantage for Speech-in-Noise Recognition in Patients with Nonlateralized Tinnitus and Normal Hearing Sensitivity.

Despite having normal hearing sensitivity, patients with chronic tinnitus may experience more difficulty recognizing speech in adverse listening conditions as compared to controls. However, the association between the characteristics of tinnitus (severity and loudness) and speech recognition remains unclear. In this study, the Quick Speech-in-Noise test (QuickSIN) was conducted monaurally on 14 patients with bilateral tinnitus and 14 age- and hearing-matched adults to determine the relation between tinnitus characteristics and speech understanding. Further, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), t…

Protection of horse ears against Simulid parasitism: Efficacy of a mammal semiochemical solution over 10hours.

Hematophagous insects can be vectors of pathogens and cause significant economic loss in zootechnical production. Among biting insects, many dipteran species feed on horse blood. The black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) group, is responsible for several disorders in horses and inflicts painful bites that lead to undesirable behaviours in horses, particularly when bites occur in sensitive areas such as the inner ear. A field study was conducted in a French equestrian center during which a semiochemical was applied on horses' ears to assess repellent efficacy against simulid infestation. During the f…

The role of the tensor veli palatini muscle in the development of cleft palate-associated middle ear problems.

OBJECTIVE: Otitis media with effusion is common in infants with an unrepaired cleft palate. Although its prevalence is reduced after cleft surgery, many children continue to suffer from middle ear problems during childhood. While the tensor veli palatini muscle is thought to be involved in middle ear ventilation, evidence about its exact anatomy, function, and role in cleft palate surgery is limited. This study aimed to perform a thorough review of the literature on (1) the role of the tensor veli palatini muscle in the Eustachian tube opening and middle ear ventilation, (2) anatomical anomali…

Cytokine profile of nasal and middle ear polyps in a patient with Woakes' syndrome and eosinophilic otitis media.

Woakes' syndrome is characterised by severe recurrent nasal polyps in early childhood with broadening of the nose, nasal dyscrinia, frontal sinus aplasia and bronchiectasis. Eosinophilic otitis media (EOM) is an intractable condition that can cause gradual or sudden deterioration of hearing and is associated with comorbid asthma. For these reasons, both diseases must be recognised and treated appropriately. We present a case of a 20-year-old man with Woakes' syndrome complicated by EOM, with polyps in both middle ears; this condition has so far not been described as an entity of eosinophilic d…

Coupling of an active middle-ear implant to the long process of the incus using an elastic clip attachment.

The active middle-ear implant Vibrant Soundbridge© (VSB) is used to treat mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing losses. The standard surgical approach for incus vibroplasty is a mastoidectomy and a posterior tympanotomy, crimping the Floating Mass Transducer (FMT) to the long process of the incus (LPI) (standard crimped application). However, tight crimping increases the risk of necrosis of the LPI, resulting in reduction of energy transfer and loss of amplification. The aim of this study was to develop a new coupling device for the LPI, that does not require crimping, and to test its vibration…

[Lower cranial polyneuropathy in zoster sine herpete presenting with pain in the ear and throat: a case report].

A 64-year-old woman developed acute paralysis of glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory, and hypoglossal nerves on the left side after pain in the head and the left ear and throat. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis and elevated protein concentration. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-DNA was detected by PCR from cerebrospinal fluid. The diagnosis of lower cranial polyneuropathy due to VZV reactivation was made. After oral administration of an anti-viral agent and steroid, all symptoms and signs dramatically improved. Notably, there was no evidence of cutaneous or mucosal …

Comparing diffusion weighted MRI in the detection of post-operative middle ear cholesteatoma in children and adults.

INTRODUCTION: There is a limited evidence base for the use of diffusion weighted MRI (DWMRI) in the assessment of post-operative cholesteatoma in children. This is important to address as this technique is particularly relevant in a paediatric setting. METHODS: We searched a prospectively collected database of patients undergoing DWMRI for the assessment of residual and recurrent cholesteatoma. Imaging findings were correlated with findings at revision surgery. 320 investigations were divided into paediatric and adult groups (90 in children, 230 in adults) and compared. RESULTS: Operative fi…

Gene Therapy Restores Hair Cell Stereocilia Morphology in Inner Ears of Deaf Whirler Mice.

Hereditary deafness is one of the most common disabilities affecting newborns. Many forms of hereditary deafness are caused by morphological defects of the stereocilia bundles on the apical surfaces of inner ear hair cells, which are responsible for sound detection. We explored the effectiveness of gene therapy in restoring the hair cell stereocilia architecture in the whirlin mouse model of human deafness, which is deaf due to dysmorphic, short stereocilia. Wild-type whirlin cDNA was delivered via adeno-associated virus (AAV8) by injection through the round window of the cochleas in neonatal …
