BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption among patients with HIV/AIDS increases the burden of the disease. HIV/AIDS is an epidemic among Sub-Saharan African countries. Excessive use of alcohol causes a large degree of health problems, social and economic burden in societies. However, the prevalence and associated factors of alcohol use disorder among this group of people has not been studied very well. Therefore, this study sought to assess the magnitude and associated factors of alcohol use disorder among HIV patients attending the antiretroviral (ART) clinic.
METHODS: A hospital based cross sectiona

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in children can be a consequence of unfavourable socioeconomic conditions. However, some families maintain adequate nutritional status in their children despite living in poverty. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether family-related factors are determinants of stunting in young Mexican children living in extreme poverty, and whether these factors differ between rural or urban contexts.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in one rural and one urban extreme poverty level areas in Mexico. Cases comprised stunted children aged between 6 and 23 months. Con

The interaction of multiple risk factors between natural systems and human societies during rapid urbanization poses significant ecological risk to regions. Scientifically assessing and managing these risks is crucial for regional ecological security and sustainable development. This study adopts a multi-source risk spatio-temporal dynamic relationship perspective, incorporating the social-ecological system (SES) framework to assess and analyze the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of ecosystem risk, social system risk, and comprehensive ecological risk in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BT

BACKGROUND: Irregular migration via the Mediterranean Sea has risen significantly in recent years, with approximately 353,300 migrants entering Europe in, 2023 alone. Mediterranean migrants, often fleeing conflict, persecution, or extreme poverty, face multidimensional vulnerabilities throughout the migration journey, including pre-migration trauma, perilous transit conditions, and post-migration challenges like social exclusion, poor living conditions, and limited access to healthcare. These factors collectively impair their psychosocial health, defined as the dynamic interplay between psycho

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Interest in nephrology fellowship training remains lower than in many other internal medicine subspecialties. Although prior studies have identified resident-defined factors influencing career choice, it is unclear whether nephrology program leadership accurately recognizes these influences. We evaluated leadership perceptions of factors shaping residents' interest in nephrology and assessed concordance with previously reported resident priorities.

BACKGROUND: High blood pressure (BP) prevalence is increasing in low- and middle-income countries, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. This compromises Sustainable Development Goal number 3-to ensure healthy lives for all people. Most BP patients do not attain normal BP despite treatment. Uncontrolled BP causes cardiovascular diseases, kidney disease and early death. It is therefore prudent to know the facilitators of BP control among treated patients.
METHODS: The aim of this study was to explore the facilitators of BP control among treated patients in two public primary healthcare

Management of infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the endemic situation in smallholder farming systems brings significant challenges. While spatially explicit agent-based models (ABMs) are useful to inform disease response decision-making, complementary methods are needed to more fully capture the influences of context on disease control and management, such as human behaviour and ecological factors which are of particular importance for endemic diseases. We describe the development of an integrated Participatory Modelling approach (PM) applied to the control of FMD wit

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is strongly linked to suicidal behaviors (ideation, plans, attempts), affecting 1 in 3 women globally, with prevalence varying across regions. Sociocultural and economic factors shape IPV and SB risk differently. This review will estimate prevalence, risk factors, and associations of IPV and SBs among women of reproductive age in Asia to provide region-specific evidence for targeted interventions. We will systematically search PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Google Scholar for studies published up to 30 November 2025, following PRIS…

BACKGROUND: Melon is an important horticultural economic crop, and low-temperature stress is one of the key factors limiting melon production. DBB proteins are crucial for plant growth, but studies on the DBB gene family in melon are still limited. This study aims to identify CmDBB genes in melon and explore their potential to enhance cold resistance. RESULTS: Using blast comparison, a total of 8 DBB family members were identified. These genes are unevenly distributed across 6 chromosomes, with two pairs of segmentally duplicated genes. Collinearity analysis showed that the gene conservation b

BACKGROUND: National drug policies vary widely across countries, shaped by historical, institutional, economic, and social factors. However, the role of cultural values in shaping drug policies remains underexplored. This study applies Hofstede's cultural dimensions index to assess associations between national cultural norms and Global Drug Policy Index (GDPI) scores.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-national comparative analysis using data from 25 countries with both GDPI scores and Hofstede's cultural dimension scores in 2021. The dependent variable was the GDPI overall score and four sub-ind
