OBJECTIVE: To undertake a comprehensive analysis of the biochemical tissue composition and passive biomechanical properties of ovine vagina and relate this to the histo-architecture at different reproductive stages as part of the establishment of a large preclinical animal model for evaluating regenerative medicine approaches for surgical treatment of pelvic organ prolapse.
METHODS: Vaginal tissue was collected from virgin (n = 3), parous (n = 6) and pregnant sheep (n = 6; mean gestation; 132 d; term = 145 d). Tissue histology was analyzed using H+E and Masson's Trichrome staining. Biochemica

Work is devoted diagnostics of sialozy in parotid salivary glands and early exposure of cancer at sialozy. For diagnostics we used are sonografy methods of research (ULTRASONIC + coloured dopplerografy) and sonoelastografy (SEG) methods. Marked uninvasiveness and high exactness of diagnostic methods at the disease of sialozys and cancer.

The cornea is a transparent connective tissue with dual functions of protecting the eye (mechanical properties) and refracting the light (optical properties). Both of these properties are derived from the corneal intricate and pseudo regular extracellular matrix, the stroma. From the mechanics point of view, the corneal extracellular matrix is a hydrated structure composed of collagen fibrils, proteoglycans, and the interstitial fluid. The objective of this study was to investigate compressive biomechanical properties of the cornea using an experimental and numerical framework. The unconfined

Often regarded as the gold standard for fibrosis assessment, liver biopsy carries associated risks; however, it is less than ideal. The need for noninvasive assessment of hepatic fibrosis for disease staging, prognosis, progression, and treatment response is clear. Advances in serologic testing and conventional imaging techniques have reduced the need for liver biopsy. Areas of research include defining cutoff values for specific diseases, further head-to-head comparisons of noninvasive modalities, examination of algorithms using both serum markers and imaging, and the cost-effectiveness of th

The aim of the paper is to review and illustrate the role of sonoelastography in the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of prostate cancer. The examination technique and normal appearance are presented. The paper describes and illustrates the appearance of prostate cancer and suggested diagnostic scores. Artifacts, causes for false results and limitations are discussed and also illustrated. The diagnostic influence of intraprostatic tumor location, tumor volume and Gleason score are presented. The paper also reviews the statistical diagnostic value of the method, the relation to prostate biop

This work focuses on the friction in contacts where the human finger pad is one of the interacting surfaces. This 'tactile friction' requires a full understanding of the contact mechanics and the behaviour of human skin. The coefficient of friction cannot be considered as a property of the skin alone, but depends on the entire tribo-system. In this work, frictional forces were measured using a commercially available load cell. Parameters such as the hydration of the skin, the normal load on the contact and the roughness of the contacting surfaces were varied, whilst keeping the other parameter

Tissue softening is commonly reported during mechanical testing of biological tissues in vitro. The loss of stiffness may be due to viscoelasticity-induced softening (the time-history of load-caused softening) and strain-induced stress softening (the maximum previous load-caused softening). However, the knowledge about tissue softening behaviour is presently poor. The aims of this study were to distinguish whether the loss of the stiffness during preconditioning was due to strain softening or viscoelasticity and to test the tissue softening in circumferential and longitudinal direction in the …

The intervertebral disc functions over a range of dynamic loading regimes including axial loads applied across a spectrum of frequencies at varying compressive loads. Biochemical changes occurring in early degeneration, including reduced nucleus pulposus glycosaminoglycan content, may alter disc mechanical behavior and thus may contribute to the progression of degeneration. The objective of this study was to determine disc dynamic viscoelastic properties under several equilibrium loads and loading frequencies, and further, to determine how reduced nucleus glycosaminoglycan content alters dynam

Therefore, we recommend that short cancellous bone cylinders with a length of 5 mm and a diameter of 8 mm should be used without gluing in the dynamic mechanical analysis of cancellous bone. Mature tissues can often adapt to changes in their chemical, mechanical, or thermal environment. For example, in response to sustained increases or decreases in mechanical loads, some tissues grow and remodel so as to restore the stress or strain to its homeostatic state. Whereas most previous work addresses gross descriptors of tissue growth, this paper introduces a possible cell-mediated mechanism by which remodeling may occur in a soft connective tissue--that the kinetics of collagen deposition and degradation is similar regardless of the configuration of the body at which it occurs. The pr

During impact, equine hooves undergo viscoelastic deformations which may result in potentially harmful strains. Previous hoof strain studies using strain gauges have been inconclusive due to arbitrary gauge placement. Photoelastic stress analysis (PSA) is a full-field technique which visually displays strains over entire loaded surfaces. This in vitro study identifies normal hoof strain patterns using PSA. Custom-made photoelastic plastic sheets were applied to the hoof surface. The hooves were axially loaded (225 kg) under level and varus/valgus conditions. Strain patterns were video-recorded

Vasovasostomy specimens were examined for vascular changes in 50 cases of vasitis nodosa. In five, benign gland- or ductule-like structures were seen invading small veins and, in one, also the small arteries. The intravascular ductules appeared benign, and there was no clinical evidence of malignancy. The presence of ductules in the blood vessels always was accompanied by marked elastosis. In 12 additional cases, elastosis of arteries and veins was seen without intravascular ductules. These changes suggest that proliferating ductules in vasitis nodosa invade the blood vessels after they have b
