Sera from typhoid fever patients in the early stage of the disease were tested for the presence of IgM antibodies to LPS of S. typhi by an ELISA method. IgM anti-LPS were present in all 10 typhoid patients, while they were undetectable in sera from both normal and febrile controls. Determination of IgM anti-LPS can be a diagnostic aid in the early phase of typhoid fever.

The time course of humoral immune response to Paragonimus siamensis was studied in 10 cats experimentally infected with either 30 or 60 matacercariae and the antibody produced was detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), complement fixation test (CFT), and immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) test. Detailed serological investigations were carried out in forty-nine active kala-azar (KA) cases in North Bihar, India. A population of 24 infants and young children followed prospectively during the first 3 years of life was studied for the occurrence of rotavirus infection by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect virus in stools. Infection with rotavirus was associated with 26 (14.2%) of 183 selected diarrheal episodes. Two cases of presumed ocular toxocariasis are reported in 19-year-old college students. A 46-year-old Brazilian man, with initial pustular lesions, neutrophilic spongiosis and subcorneal cleavage evolved to an atypical pemphigus phenotype, with suprabasal acantholysis. Serum samples were obtained from 24 horses in the State of Coahuila, Mexico, in December 2002. Antibodies to West Nile virus were detected by epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and confirmed by plaque reduction neutralization test in 15 (62.5%) horses. We report the first West Nile virus activity in northern Mexico.

A simple antigen detection test was developed for rapid diagnosis of melioidosis caused by Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) pseudomallei infection. The method was based on the use of a specific monoclonal antibody in a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to capture antigen in clinical specimens culture positive for B. pseudomallei. The results showed the sensitivity and specificity of the test to be 75 and 98%, respectively.

A case of cysticercosis involving only the sternocleidomastoid muscle of an otherwise-healthy pregnant woman is presented. An enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot assay for cysticercosis was nonreactive. The clinical features of extraneural cysticercosis are reviewed with special attention to musculocutaneous involvement. The results of serological tests for such patients may not be positive and histopathology remains the only reliable method for confirming the diagnosis of cysticercosis.

Hepatic bilirubin uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase activity was assayed in an infant with prolonged jaundice and congenital hypothyroidism before thyroid therapy. This activity was nil, suggesting a possible delayed maturation of the enzyme. Although further studies will be necessary to confirm this hypothesis, prolonged jaundice associated with congenital hypothyroidism may be due to a delayed maturation of the hepatic glucuronidation of bilirubin.

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the indirect immunofluorescent (IF) and the counter current immunoelectrophoresis (CEP) were evaluated in detection of anti-Trichinella antibodies in experimentally infected rats. The CEP was the most specific and highly sensitive test. Also, the IF was highly sensitive but less specific. ELISA was the least specific but extremely sensitive specially in detecting early infection.

A serum antibody response has not been previously demonstrated after infection with Clostridium botulinum. We developed an enzyme immunoassay for measuring serum antibody to C. botulinum toxins A, B, and E.
