Exploring factors associated with psychiatric hospitalization for persons living with family.

This study investigates the combinations of factors associated with involuntary psychiatric admission for persons living with their family and whether these are differentiated by type of family. Data from consecutive admissions in public acute psychiatric units of Thessaloniki, Greece, collected over one-year period were analyzed via Latent Profile Analysis. Of the three ensued profiles, only one, consisting mainly of younger men diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders living with their family of origin, is linked to involuntary hospitalization. The other two profiles include mainly ol…

Fertility care and family building for LGBTQ+ individuals: a committee opinion.

The purpose of this American Society for Reproductive Medicine Practice Committee Opinion is to provide clinicians with strategies and special considerations for the evaluation and treatment of individuals in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community pursuing fertility care and family building. It is imperative that patients from this vulnerable population receive clinically appropriate, evidence-based care, which may diverge from routine protocols in the infertility clinic setting.

Childhood family attachment and physical abuse: the moderating role of gender.

Childhood physical abuse has lasting implications for individual well-being, yet empirical evidence on protective family factors and their gendered effects during emerging adulthood remains limited. This study offers novel insight by examining gender as a moderating factor in the relationship between childhood family attachment and childhood physical abuse among emerging adults. The objective of this study is to assess whether stronger childhood family attachment reduces experiences of childhood physical abuse and to determine whether this protective effect differs by gender. Data were collect…

A novel family of fungal protein biosurfactants: Discovery and sustainable production.

Protein-based biosurfactants remain underexplored compared to glycolipids and lipopeptides, despite their unique interfacial properties and self-assembly behavior. PAC3, a surface-active protein produced by the marine fungus Acremonium sclerotigenum, exhibits dual behavior as both a biosurfactant and bioemulsifier. For this reason, it can be seen as a high molecular weight proteinaceous compound, able to efficiently reduce surface tension. Here, we identify PAC3 as the first member of a previously unrecognized family of fungal protein biosurfactants. The complete amino acid sequence of PAC3 wa…

A Looplike Secondary Structure Uncovered in a Family of Peptoid Hexamers.

Peptoids, or N-substituted glycine oligomers, are a unique class of biomimetic foldamers. Peptoid oligomers are indeed capable of adopting well-defined ordered structures despite their intrinsic flexibility, which is primarily attributable to the cis/trans isomerism of the main chain tertiary amide bonds. Controlling the geometry of the amides can lead to a diversity of diastereomeric structures. Here, we report for the first time that peptoid hexamers can adopt a unique looplike structure with a cis-cis-trans-cis-cis arrangement of the backbone amides. We found that a neutral zwitterionic sta

Newborn With Abnormal ECG and Family History of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a cardiac channelopathy caused by mutations in cardiac ion channel genes, leading to delayed ventricular repolarization, QT interval prolongation, and risk of malignant arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. The condition often presents during childhood or adolescence but can be identified in neonates, particularly when there is a positive family history. Early recognition is critical, as timely intervention with beta-blockers and avoidance of QT-prolonging medications can prevent life-threatening events. We report the case of a full-term neonate born via c…

Vasotocin influences mother-offspring associations in a facultatively family-living lizard.

Parent-offspring associations provide the basis for more complex care and breeding systems. One proximate mechanism by which parental behavior is facilitated across animal taxa is via nonapeptide hormones such as arginine vasotocin (AVT). However, existing research largely comes from obligately social species, and whether such mechanisms are conserved in social systems where care is facultative remains unclear. Here, we used a facultatively family living skink, Liopholis whitii, to test the role of AVT in mediating 2 key parental behaviors: parent-offspring associations (measured by proximity …

Regulation of neutrophil homeostasis by the TNFAIP8 family of polarity proteins.

The extremely short life span of neutrophils is critical for immune homeostasis and immune defense against pathogens, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are not fully understood. Here we report that TNFAIP8 (TNF-α-induced protein 8) family of polarity proteins regulates neutrophil homeostasis by propagating phosphoinositide signaling. Genetic deletion of two members of the TNFAIP8 family, i.e., TIPE0 and TIPE1, resulted in spontaneous neutrophilia and hepatitis. TNFAIP8 disruption preferentially increased the levels of two lipid second messengers, i.e., phosphatidylinosito…

Atypical pertussis: Family cluster case series and primary care management strategies.

Pertussis, caused by Bordetella pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory illness experiencing a resurgence globally, particularly in adolescents, and adults. General practitioners (GPs) in primary care settings are crucial for early detection and control, yet often face challenges in diagnosing atypical presentations. This case series describes a family cluster of atypical pertussis managed by a community health service center in Shenzhen, China. A 42-year-old male (Case 1) initially presented with a 10-day history of persistent, dry cough, lacking characteristic paroxysmal coughing and f…

Lipid transport mechanisms in human ABCA family transporters: a structural perspective.

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are essential membrane proteins that couple ATP hydrolysis to move diverse substrates across lipid bilayers through large-scale conformational changes. In humans, 48 ABC transporters span seven subfamilies (A-G); within these, the ABCA subfamily mediates cellular lipid handling in contexts ranging from neural function to pulmonary surfactant production, and its dysfunction contributes to human disease from cardiovascular disorders to Alzheimer's. These diverse physiological roles all depend on precise lipid translocation within or across membrane systems…
