Histopathologic findings of tularemia lymphadenitis.

Tularemia is a rare zoonotic infection most often acquired through exposure to infected animals, arthropods, or contaminated food or water. Diagnosis typically involves serologic or PCR testing, but histopathologic findings can be a clue to the diagnosis. Here, we present a case of inguinal lymphadenopathy in an adolescent patient with a history of multiple animal exposures and possible tick bite. Excisional lymph node biopsy showed necrotizing granulomatous inflammation, and the clinical history, histologic findings, and serologic results together led to the diagnosis of ulceroglandular tular

Coinfection of enteric fever and hepatitis A.

Poor sanitation and contaminated food and water are major risk factors for several infectious diseases like enteric fever and hepatitis A, but their coinfection is uncommon. Although the liver is frequently affected in typhoid fever, substantial hepatic dysfunction in an appropriately treated patient is uncommon. Our patient had high-grade fever with mild transaminitis and blood culture that grew Salmonella typhi Despite being treated with culture-sensitive antibiotic at adequate dosage, he developed jaundice and had worsening transaminitis (>1000 IU/L) which was suggestive of hepatotropic vir

Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis Improved after Eradication Therapy for Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacterpylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes gastric mucosa and is often transmitted through direct contact with saliva, contaminated food or water, and vomit. The majority of the infected individuals remain asymptomatic for a long period. Infection with H. Pylori often presents with dyspepsia, nausea, frequent belching, bloating, abdominal discomfort, burning abdominal pain, and peptic ulcer. A potential association between H. Pylori and recurrent aphthous stomatitis was previously reported; however, the presence of causative relationship between the two remained

Apicomplexan infections in the gut.

Toxoplasma gondii and Cryptosporidium parvum are intracellular protozoan parasites that establish infection through the small intestinal bowel after the ingestion of contaminated food products. These Apicomplexan parasites have emerged as an important cause of chronic and fatal disease in immunodeficient individuals, in addition to being investigated as possible triggers of inflammatory bowel disease. T. gondii disseminates to the brain and other tissues after infection, whereas C. parvum remains localized to the intestine. In the following review, we will discuss the pathogenesis of these par

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are important enteric pathogens worldwide, causing diarrhea with or without blood visibly present and hemolytic uremic syndrome. STEC are unique among diarrheogenic E coli in producing Shiga toxin type 1 and type 2, the virulence factors responsible for bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Cattle and other ruminants are the natural reservoir of STEC as their normal intestinal flora. Humans become infected by consumption of foods contaminated with cattle feces. Early diagnosis of STEC infection is important because of the contraindication

Intestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Telmatoscopus albipunctatus in a Taiwanese man.

Here we reported the first case in Taiwan of human intestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Telmatoscopus albipunctatus. The 21-year-old male patient experienced gastroenteritis and anal itching. During the patient's first hospital visit the doctor suspected Enterobius infection. After treatment with anthelmintic mebendazole, 5 live larvae were passed out in the feces. Symptoms were resolved a few days later. The larvae were brown and slender, measuring approximately 10 mm in length. The worms were located in the intestine. Subsequent examination showed that the cause was an infestation of larva

Bacteremia by Streptobacillus moniliformis: first case described in Spain.

Described here is the case of an 87-year-old man who developed fever, chills and discomfort caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis. This pathogen is one of the causes of rat-bite fever, an uncommon bacterial illness transmitted through a bite or scratch from a rodent or the ingestion of food or water contaminated with rat faeces. Cases of rat-bite fever are rarely reported in Spain. The patient reported no history of rat bite or rodent contact, and the only known risk factor was contact with a dog and a cat that were kept as pets. Streptobacillus moniliformis was isolated in two sets of blood

Production of staphylococcal enterotoxin A in cream-filled cake.

Cakes were baked with normal ingredients and filled with cream, inoculated with different size enterotoxigenic-staphylococcal inocula. Samples of the cakes were incubated at room temperature and put in the refrigerator. Samples of cake and filling were taken at different times and analyzed for staphylococcal count and presence of enterotoxin. The smaller the inoculum, the longer the time required for sufficient growth (10(6)) to occur for production of detectable enterotoxin. Enterotoxin added to the cake dough before baking (210 degrees C, 45 min) did not survive the baking. The presence of e

Campylobacter.

Campylobacter is now known to be a major cause of gastrointestinal illness throughout the world. There are seven species known to be associated with enteritis, and it is likely that more will be described. Campylobacter jejuni is responsible for more than 95 per cent of the cases of diarrhea due to Campylobacter. Contaminated food products are the major source of infection. The clinical illness usually involves diarrhea, abdominal pain, and other constitutional symptoms. An accurate diagnosis of Campylobacter enteritis is made when the organism is cultured from the patient's stool. Selective m

Thiamin inadequacy in infants: lack of evidence of amprolium in egg yolk.

This study investigated the hypothesis that the consumption of egg yolks might lead to thiamin inadequacy in infants because of the possible contamination of the egg yolks with amprolium. Earlier workers showed that the presence of amprolium in the diet inhibits the absorption of thiamin. Amprolium is added to some poultry feeds to control coccidiosis: it is readily incorporated in the egg yolk and egg yolk is one of the solid foods offered to infants at weaning. We found that under current commercial poultry feeding practices in WA it is extremely unlikely that any amprolium would be present

Changes in hemopoiesis of mice of the C3H strain following transplantation of Gardner lymphosarcoma and infection with LDH-virus. III. Blood proteins.

Inoculation of bone marrow and spleen cells of C3H/Sumice strain mice demonstrated that on the ninth day of growth of Gardner lymphosarcoma these tissues were invaded with tumor cells. The weights of mice with advanced tumors increased. Yet the deterioration of health status of mice is characterized by decreased food and water consumption, as well as by lower concentrations of proteins in mouse sera and plasma. The albumin fraction shows a remarkable drop. These changes could not be detected in tumor free mice following LDH-virus infection. The treatment with L-asparaginase influenced the mani

Mechanistic Pathways Controlling Cadmium Bioavailability and Ecotoxicity in Agricultural Systems: A Global Meta-Analysis of Lime Amendment Strategies.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural systems poses significant ecotoxicological risks through bioaccumulation in food chains. While lime-based amendments are widely applied for Cd immobilization, mechanistic understanding of bioavailability control pathways remains limited. This study employed a meta-analysis methodology based on 260 datasets from 55 publications to systematically investigate the mechanisms and differences in the effectiveness of calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, and calcium oxide in regulating Cd migration in acidic soil-plant systems. The study revealed that lime-b

Evaluation of ozonated and ultrasonically treated corn starch as an adsorbent for patulin in buffer solutions.

This study evaluates the potential of ozonated corn starch (OCS) and ultrasonicated ozonated corn starch (USOCS) as adsorbents for patulin removal in buffer solutions. The results indicated that dual modification significantly altered the starch's structure, introducing functional groups such as carbonyl and carboxyl groups, and increasing its surface area. These modifications led to enhanced patulin adsorption capacity. Adsorption efficiency was tested across different adsorbent doses (150 mg, 200 mg, 250 mg) and contact times (15, 30, 45, and 60 min). The highest removal efficiency of 92.5%

Rapid determination of phthalates in paper products by supercritical fluid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry.

Phthalic acid esters are widely used as components of industrial and consumer products including paper and cardboard packaging materials in contact with food or human skin. Being endocrine-disrupting chemicals, phthalic acid esters have a negative effect on human health and must be controlled in pulp and paper products. In the present study, supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in combination with pressurized liquid extraction was proposed for phthalic acid esters determination in such objects. Octadecyl stationary phase with non-endcapped silanol groups ensured rapid (4
