Prevalence of allergy to latex in the pediatric population.

Latex is a substance that is extracted from the plant Hevea Brasiliensis, and world production is 6 million metric tons per year. After gathering it undergoes a series of processes in which ammonia, vulcanization-accelerating additives or anti-oxidants are added. All of this may constitute the antigenic load that latex contains. It is used in medicine for gloves, drainage tubes, dental implants and a growing number of products from condoms to sport products or automobile components. Over fifteen different allergenic bands have been described, with molecular weights of between 2 and 100 kDa. In

Effects of dietary anticarcinogens on rat gastrointestinal glutathione S-transferase theta 1-1 levels.

Several naturally occurring food components or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce gastrointestinal cancer rates. Recently we have shown that dietary administration of such compounds enhanced the glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme activity and class alpha, mu and pi isoenzyme levels in the rat gastrointestinal tract. Elevation of the levels of GSTs, a family of biotransformation enzymes with many functions such as detoxification of carcinogens, might be one of the mechanisms that lead to cancer prevention. We therefore investigated whether the anticarcinogens alpha-an

Aluminium, calcium and magnesium content of Hungarian foods and dietary intakes by children aged 3.9 and 14 years.

The Al, Ca and Mg content of 147 kinds of foods and beverages, representing a large proportion of the Hungarian diet, has been determined using replicate samples. Dietary intakes of these minerals by 67 kindergarten children and 139 schoolchildren have been assessed. The richest sources of Al were: parsley, celery, gherkins, barley-malt; of Ca: dairy products, celery, parsley, savoy; of Mg: dried beans and peas, parsley, dill, maize-flour, rice, gherkins, chocolate. Flavouring agents (e.g. salt, pepper, paprika, caraway-seed) had very high concentrations of all three minerals and poppy-seeds t

Crohn's disease of the duodenum presented as pancreatitis due to persimmon bezoar.

Pancreatitis due to Crohn's disease of the duodenum is very rare. It is the result of either reflux of duodenal content into the pancreatic duct or stenosis due to direct involvement of the ampullary region with Crohn's disease. The patient described had isolated Crohn's disease of the duodenum; pancreatitis was the result of persimmon bezoar's constricting the ampullary region.

The Conversion of Black Chokeberry Condensed Tannins into Anthocyanidins Has a Better Reparative Effect on the Imbalance of Gut Microbiota and Metabolites Caused by a High-Salt Diet.

Black chokeberry is rich in polyphenols, but its high-content polymeric condensed tannins impair gut microbiota, while anthocyanins exert beneficial regulatory effects. This study compared the reparative effects and metabolic changes of black chokeberry extracts (BCE: rich in condensed tannins) and conversion treatment black chokeberry extracts (CTBCE: converts condensed tannins into cyanidin) on gut microbiota imbalance caused by a high-salt diet. Results showed that a high-salt diet significantly reduced Lactobacillus abundance, and intervention with two extracts can effectively restore the

The Therapeutic Potential of Berry-Derived and Berry-Based Interventions in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Comprehensive Systematic Review of Preclinical and Clinical Evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Berry-derived and berry-based interventions have gained increasing attention for their potential health benefits. Berries are rich in diverse bioactive compounds, including polyphenols and anthocyanins, which are associated with a broad range of biological activities, particularly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Over the last decade, numerous studies have focused on berries, particularly those from the Ericaceae family (blueberry, cranberry and bilberry), the Solanaceae family (goji berry, Solanum nigrum berries) and the Elaeocarpaceae family (maqui berry). Berries are

Impact of pre-harvest elicitors on the toxigenic mycobiota and mycotoxin risk in dried figs: A holistic safety assessment.

Pre-harvest fungal contamination of figs (Ficus carica L.) poses a significant food safety risk due to mycotoxin production. While chemical elicitors are proposed as a sustainable control strategy, their impact on the autochthonous mycobiota and mycotoxin profiles during fig maturation and sun-drying is largely unknown. This study evaluated the effects of pre-harvest applications of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), oxalic acid (OA), and melatonin (MT) on the fungal community dynamics and 16 mycotoxins across five ripening and senescence stages of 'Calabacita' figs. Results showed a clear ecological

Assessment of Human Fecal Contamination Risks in Frozen Berries and Cherries Using Human-Associated Bacteroides Marker.

Contaminated frozen berries have frequently been linked to outbreaks of enteric viruses, including hepatitis A virus (HAV) and norovirus (NoV), primarily because they are consumed without heat treatment. To evaluate the risk of fecal contamination beyond virus detection, a quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay targeting the human-associated Bacteroides marker BacH was applied, with enhanced sensitivity achieved by incorporating a reverse transcription (RT) step. The BacH RT-qPCR assay using human fecal specimens yielded cycle threshold values at an average of 15.94 cycles fewer than those obtained wit

Comprehensive quality evaluation of ultrasound-assisted fermented Yuluxiang pear juice: Physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant activity, and multi-dimensional flavor analysis.

Yuluxiang pear juice processing faces critical technical challenges: enzymatic browning, nutrient degradation during thermal processing, and flavor volatilization. Ultrasound (US)-assisted fermentation, an emerging non-thermal technology, enhances fruit juice quality. However, its regulatory mechanisms in fermented pear juice flavor formation remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of 0-500 W US power on Lactiplantibacillus plantarum-fermented Yuluxiang pear juice. An integrated electronic nose (E-nose), electronic tongue (E-tongue), and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry…

Prevalence of Listeria spp. on food contact surfaces in commercial cherry packinghouses in Washington and California.

Recent recalls for tree fruit due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes have highlighted the importance of understanding the high-risk food contact surfaces (FCS) in commercial packinghouses in order to manage the risk of cross-contamination within the packing environment. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of Listeria spp. on FCS in Washington State and California cherry packinghouses and to identify locations with the greatest likelihood to harbor Listeria spp. Four commercial cherry packinghouses were visited three times each during two consecutive…

Dielectric barrier discharge plasma-assisted extraction of Rhamnogalacturonan-I pectin from pomelo peel: Structural characterization and application in an emulsion gel delivery system.

Pomelo peel, a major byproduct of pomelo processing, was utilized to isolate rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) pectin via a novel approach combining low-concentration alkaline extraction with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment, followed by characterization. The extracted pectin (DAP) was characterized by its esterification degree, monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), triple-helix structure, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that DBD increased its RG-I content while preserving its

Study on the Material Basis of the "the Older, the Better" Phenomenon in Aurantii Fructus Using Fingerprinting Combined With Chemometric Analysis.

Aurantii Fructus (AF), the dried immature fruit of Citrus aurantium L., is a widely used qi-regulating herb in clinical practice. Traditional medical texts describe AF as "the older, the better," implying that aging moderates its medicinal properties and enhances efficacy, although the mechanisms remain unclear. Here, dynamic changes in volatile and nonvolatile components during AF aging were investigated using long-term natural aging and accelerated aging models, involving raw AF and four processed forms. Compositional variations across aging stages were characterized by high-performance liqu…

Green and Efficient Extraction of Polyphenols From Lonicera caerulea L. Berries and Evaluation of Their Antioxidant and Lipid-Lowering Activities.

The demand for sustainable methods to extract bioactive compounds from fruits is increasing, yet conventional extraction methods are limited by their reliance on large amounts of organic solvents, limiting their widespread application. Therefore, we evaluated a deep eutectic solvent (DES)-ultrasound-assisted extraction to efficiently extract phenolic compounds from Lonicera caerulea L. berries. Using single-factor experiments and response surface methodology, the optimal conditions were determined: A DES composed of choline chloride and 1,3-butanediol at a 1:5 molar ratio, with 29% water conte…
