Sanjad-Sakati syndrome (SSS) or hypoparathyroidism-retardation-dysmorphism syndrome (HDR) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. It is characterized by the association of congenital hypothyroidism, growth retardation, psychomotor retardation, epilepsy, dysmorphic features (microcephaly, facial, eye, and dental anomalies), and abnormalities of the extremities. The prevalence of SSS is unknown. Reported patients are were almost exclusively from the Arabian Peninsula. They are were all homozygous for the ancestral mutation c.155- 166del of the TBCE gene, also known as "the Bedouin mutation." We

Seven field populations of mosquito Culex pipiens complex (Diptera: Culicidae) were collected from four provinces of China. The resistance status of larvae to dichlorvos, parathion, chlorpyrifos, fenobucarb (BPMC) and propoxur were determined by bioassays, disclosing that they were more resistant to organophosphate (moderate or low resistance) than to carbamate (low or no significant resistance) insecticides. Starch gel electrophoresis confirmed the presence and distribution of overproduced esterases B1, A2-B2, A8-B8 and A9-B9, the frequencies of which varied according to their regional origin

Gluten has recently been introduced into the diet of the Mediterranean and European population, but a considerable proportion has not adapted to this change and has developed intolerance to gluten. At least one million EEC citizens are gluten intolerant. In Italy each year 12 million ECU is spent in the diagnosis of uncomplicated gluten intolerance, 10 million ECU for complex diagnosis and 32 million ECU for long-term complications and malignancies. The total financial load of gluten intolerance, in its present state, is about 150 million ECU/year in Italy. Four million ECU is actually needed

Many workers in human sexuality have tried to discover causes of sexual orientation. No one theory has proved to be satisfactory. Studies of monozygotic and dizygotic twins, some of whom have been reared separately and some together, suggest that there may be an inherited component of homosexuality. Other studies, particularly those concerned with the evolution of human sexuality, question such a possibility. A further question arises because a large part of the human population is neither exclusively homosexual nor exclusively heterosexual. This paper will examine the evidence for genetic inh

Five hundred children and adolescents affected by mild mental retardation were studied together with their families with regard to a number of psycho-social, medical and genetic factors. Statistical studies were performed with these data and showed that this apparently homogeneous population could in fact be divided into three subgroups. The first and by far the largest group (66%) was constituted by a clinically normal population but in whom adverse social and cultural factors were dominant. In the second subgroup (20%) the mental retardation was much more pronounced (IQ of 50----65) and the

Hypertriglyceridemia is the most frequent lipid abnormality associated with obesity. Genetic polymorphism of apolipoprotein E (apoE) has been demonstrated to influence lipid levels. We wanted to assess the role of apoE alleles in the hypertriglyceridemias of the obese population. The apoE phenotypes and lipid status were investigated in a population of 172 obese French subjects. The frequencies of phenotypes E4/3, E4/4 and E4/2 were 29.7%, 8.1% and 2.1%, respectively, in a subgroup with triglycerides greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl (n = 37) versus 14.2%, 2.7% and 0.9% in the normolipidemic

BACKGROUND: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a major hereditary disorder characterized by the formation of cysts in the kidneys of mammals, including humans and cats. It commonly leads to renal failure and is frequently associated with variants in the PKD1 gene. In cats, a specific PKD1 variant (chr E3:g.42858112 C > A) is a primary target for direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing aimed at identifying PKD risk. However, its broad impact on the genetic structure of cat populations remains unclear. In this study, we investigated temporal and breed-specific dynamics of feline PKD and the PKD

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and Sjögren's syndrome (SS) frequently co-occur clinically, implying a potential association between the two diseases. However, their genetic association remains unclarified. To investigate whether there is a genetic link between HT and SS, we performed a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.
METHODS: Data for HT were obtained from the IEU Open GWAS project, consisting of 15,654 cases and 379,986 controls. Data for SS were sourced from FinnGen Release 11, with 2981 cases and 439,424 controls included. We adopted the inverse va

BACKGROUND: The current wide-spread drug and insecticide resistance in malaria parasites and mosquito vectors reinforces the urgent need of innovative interventions such as stage-specific vaccines. Transmission-blocking vaccine (TBV) candidates, including Plasmodium falciparum Pfs48/45 and Pfs230 play an essential role in enabling parasite fertilization within mosquitoes. This study evaluated the genetic diversity and evolutionary dynamics of the Pfs230 gene to provide critical information on its potential as a suitable TBV candidate.
METHODS: The study utilized genomic data from the MalariaG

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been successful in identifying over 100 loci associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) susceptibility. However, the majority of these studies have focused on European cohorts with few including diverse ancestries. Using genotyped and imputed data from 691 South African PD cases and 826 controls, we conducted a conventional GWAS, two local ancestry GWAS (LA-GWAS) approaches (one using local ancestry as a covariate and the other separating the dosage per ancestry), and an association analysis to identify regions of homozygosity associated with PD status

BACKGROUND: Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) allele frequencies, dietary habits, and folate status and their associations vary across ethnic populations. Little is known about the SNPs accounting for variations of folate-related biomarkers for Chinese preparing-for-pregnant females.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify SNPs contributing to RBC and serum folate, vitamin B-12, and homocysteine concentrations in Chinese female preconception population.
METHODS: A genome-wide association study was conducted on 1000 randomly selected preconception Chinese women from the Shanghai Preconception Coh

Protein tyrosine phosphatase, nonreceptor type 22 (PTPN22), is an archetypal non-HLA autoimmunity gene. It is one of the most prominent genetic contributors to type 1 diabetes mellitus outside the HLA region, and prevalence of its risk variants is subject to enormous geographic variability. Here, we address the genetic background of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus of Armenian descent. Armenia has a population that has been genetically isolated for 3000 years. We hypothesized that two PTPN22 polymorphisms, rs2476601 and rs1310182, are associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus in persons o

Brain imaging genomics has manifested considerable potential in illuminating the genetic determinants of human brain structure and function. This has propelled us to develop the GIANT (Genetically Informed brAiN aTlas) that accounts for genetic and neuroanatomical variations simultaneously. Integrating voxel-wise heritability and spatial proximity, GIANT clusters brain voxels into genetically informed regions, while retaining fundamental anatomical knowledge. Compared to conventional (non-genetics) brain atlases, GIANT exhibits smaller intra-region variations and larger inter-region variations

At present, the etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is still unclear, but both genetic and non-genetic factors are thought to take part in the etiopathogenesis of AD. Epidemiologic researches revealed that genetic factors played a decisive role in the development of both early-onset AD (EOAD) and late-onset AD (LOAD). The mutations in APP, PSEN1 and PSEN2 are inherited in a Mendelian fashion and directly lead to the EOAD, while recent genome-wide association studies have identified numbers of risky genes, which influences the susceptibility to LOAD. Although genetic factors are inherited and

PURPOSE: Recently, Simberg et al. (2009) found genetic effects on a composite variable consisting of 6 vocal symptom items measuring dysphonia. The purpose of the present study was to determine genetic and environmental effects on the individual vocal symptoms in a population-based sample of Finnish twins.
METHOD: The sample comprised 1,728 twins (125 monozygotic and 108 dizygotic twin pairs) born between 1961 and 1989, who completed a questionnaire concerning 6 vocal symptoms. Values for additive genetic, dominant genetic, shared environmental, and nonshared environmental components were com

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disorder with an associated high risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The considerable variation in age of onset of CHD in patients with FH is believed to arise from conventional risk factors, as well as genetic variation other than in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene. The degree to which currently known genetic variants can improve the prediction of CHD risk beyond conventional risk factors in this disorder was investigated. Fourteen genetic variants recently identified for association with CHD in a Dutch FH population were

BACKGROUND: Deciphering the genetic basis of above and below ground organs communication is essential for plant adaptation. In grafted perennial crops, such as grapevine, identifying genes from the roots system controlling the expression of shoot traits is essential to improve plant adaptation to environmental conditions through rootstock breeding. However, the grapevine rootstocks genetic control on conferred scion traits has rarely been explored and even less considering genetic diversity at the intra-species level through GWAS. In this study we used a Vitis berlandieri natural population co

BACKGROUND: The genetic architecture of Parkinson's disease (PD) varies considerably across ancestries, yet most genetic studies have focused on individuals of European descent, limiting our insights into the genetic architecture of PD at a global scale.
METHODS: We conducted a large-scale, multi-ancestry investigation of causal and risk variants in PD-related genes. Using genetic datasets from the Global Parkinson's Genetics Program, we analyzed sequencing and genotyping data from 69,881 individuals, including 41,139 affected and 28,742 unaffected, from eleven different ancestries, including

Background: Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the GBA1 gene, leading to deficient β-glucocerebrosidase activity. This results in the accumulation of glucocerebroside in macrophages, primarily affecting the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and bones. Understanding the clinical outcomes and genetic mutation profiles in specific populations, such as Turkish patients, is essential for optimized disease management and personalized therapy and preventing morbidity and mortality. Method: This retrospective study analyzed data from 29 Turki

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E (APOE) alleles are well-established genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their effects on AD biomarkers (amyloid beta [Aβ]42/40, phosphorylated tau [p-tau]181, neurofilament light chain [NfL], and glial fibrillary acidic protein [GFAP]) may vary across populations due to ancestry-, age-, and sex-related differences. We hypothesized that these effects vary across Hispanic/Latino background groups with distinct ancestral admixture.
METHODS: We analyzed ε2 and ε4 allele associations with AD biomarkers using survey-weighted linear regression models,
