OBJECTIVE: We report rates and risk factors for attrition in the first cohort of patients followed through all stages from HIV testing to antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation.
DESIGN: Cohort study of all patients diagnosed with HIV between January and June 2009.
METHODS: We calculated the proportion of patients who completed CD4 cell counts and initiated ART or remained in pre-ART care during 2 years of follow-up and assessed predictors of attrition.

PURPOSE: To study the occurrence of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) as an ocular manifestation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in pediatric patients.
METHODS: A retrospective study was done on the observations of cases of HIV-positive children. There are no comparative data on the treatment duration of cutaneous herpes zoster (HZ) in patients with HIV infection. We retrospectively reviewed all 51 adult patients with HIV infection presenting with cutaneous HZ in the 15-year period 1995-2009 treated with intravenous aciclovir alone. Despite high seroprevalence rates in some parts of Africa, there is notable variation in prevalence between population subgroups. To document changes and trends in HIV seroprevalence in northeastern Zaire, 1989 to 1992 blood donor data were reviewed. Overall, 2453 donors were tested with seropositivity varying from 2.8% in 1989 to 6.9% in 1992. We present our experience with AIDS in Curaçao in the first 6 years after the introduction of a serologic HIV screening method. 71 cases of full-blown AIDS were diagnosed in the period 1-1-1986 to 12-31-1991 giving a mean incidence of 81 cases per million per year.
