Alcohol-related health risks, cancer and government drinking guidelines: Views of adults at midlife in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Alcohol consumption increases longer-term health risks, including cancer. Many adults at midlife in Aotearoa New Zealand drink frequently but may not be aware of such risks. This study examined midlife adults' awareness of alcohol and health risks and their knowledge of government low-risk drinking guidelines. A convenience sample of 502 adults (aged 40-65 years; 70% female) completed an online questionnaire. Almost all respondents reported they were aware of health risks associated with alcohol consumption. When unprompted, 41% of the sample named cancer as a health risk; when asked if they k

Decisional needs of intensive care unit survivors with alcohol use disorder considering alcohol treatment: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a common and serious medical condition with substantial global public health impact, and it is prevalent among patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in the United States. Many ICU survivors with AUD report motivation to change their drinking, however, few receive alcohol treatment. We sought to understand the decision support needs of ICU survivors with AUD when faced with choices about alcohol treatment options. METHODS: In this qualitative study, we completed 17 semi-structured interviews with hospitalized patients with AUD recruited fr

"I never realized how hard recovery is." A quasi-experimental evaluation of a youth participatory action research project for opioid prevention.

Youth participatory action research (YPAR) has been effectively used for substance use prevention. Yet, YPAR has not been evaluated for opioids, which negatively impact individuals and communities across the United States. The current study evaluated an opioid-focused YPAR project. YPAR participants (n = 28) completed a pre- and post-survey capturing psychological empowerment and opioid knowledge and behavior. A non-YPAR comparison group (n = 18) provided post-survey data. Mean comparisons were conducted to identify changes among participants and between intervention and comparison groups. YPA

Culture, self-esteem and menstrual hygiene management among adolescent girls in Uganda: the impact of economic and family strengthening.

BACKGROUND: In many Sub-Saharan African countries (SSA), including Uganda, adolescent girls, especially those from low-income families, are disproportionately affected by inadequate menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facilities and supplies. This study assesses the impact of two interventions, including economic empowerment and family-strengthening interventions, on the self-esteem of adolescent girls and explores the moderating effects of cultural attitudes and menstrual hygiene knowledge. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from a 3-arm Cluster Randomized Control Trial, Suubi4Her study,

Attitudes and behavioral outcomes of Nebraska hunters toward tick-borne disease.

New threats to public and animal health are emerging as changes in climate, land use, and vegetation alter the landscape of the Great Plains. The annual incidence of tick-borne disease in Nebraska is increasing, and newly established species such as blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and their associated pathogens may present challenges for health practitioners. One Health strategies for tick-borne disease prevention must incorporate effective messaging acknowledging variation in risk perception. We surveyed hunters in Nebraska to determine how the perception of risk for tick-borne disease

Informational Sources About Breastfeeding Associated with Breastfeeding Initiation: Insights into Racial Disparities.

Background: Breastfeeding provides essential nutrition and disease protection for infants while reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and breast cancer in mothers. Despite these benefits, significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in breastfeeding initiation, particularly among Black women. This study examines racial differences in the receipt of breastfeeding information from varying sources and their association with breastfeeding initiation. Methods: Data were obtained from the Phase 8 Core Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System for 2016-2020 (n = 163,724). The analysis focused on

A qualitative exploration of cigar smoking beliefs by type among U.S. susceptible Black young adults.

BACKGROUND: Cigar smoking is associated with cancer and pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. Black young adults have the highest prevalence of cigarillo and little filtered cigar smoking. Little is known about Black young adults' beliefs about each cigar type, which helps understand behaviors and informs prevention strategies. METHODS: We conducted belief elicitation interviews with 30 Black young adults interested in cigar smoking from April 2022-January 2024 to explore their behavioral, normative, and control beliefs by cigar type. We used thematic analysis to code emergent themes by beli

Practice and factors associated with neonatal sunlight exposure among mothers in Jigjiga City, Somali Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Sunlight is a vital natural resource for sustaining life on Earth. Sunlight exposure, especially ultraviolet B, is necessary for synthesizing vitamin D in the skin. Early life is the most prevalent time for vitamin D deficiency, and almost half of mothers in Ethiopia are estimated to have a low level of good practice of sunlight exposure, which remains a major contributing factor to vitamin D deficiency in Ethiopian children. OBJECTIVES: To assess the practices and factors associated with neonatal sunlight exposure among mothers in Jigjiga City, Somali Regional State, Eastern Ethio

'Fear of threats': a mixed-method study among Malaysian women with gestational diabetes mellitus.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common medical condition during pregnancy and is linked to short- and long-term complications for both mothers and offspring. However, there is limited information regarding poor glycaemic control in Malaysia. This study aims to determine the predictors of poor glycaemic control among women with GDM and to explore women's perceptions and experiences in self-managing glycaemic control. An explanatory sequential mixed methods study was conducted among women with GDM in Northern Terengganu. A proportional-to-size stratified sampling method was used in quan

Fertility awareness in 97,414 women trying to conceive: gaps, misconceptions, and implications for reproductive education.

BACKGROUND: Fertility rates in the UK are at an all-time low, with infertility affecting approximately 1 in 7 couples. Despite the rising demand for fertility services, fertility awareness, specifically knowledge of ovulation and the fertile window, remains low among women of reproductive age. Most existing studies offer a broad perspective, lacking focus on women actively trying to conceive (TTC). This study aims to assess the level of understanding surrounding the fertile window among women TTC, identifying factors associated with knowledge gaps. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional an
