Effects of heart rate and right ventricular pressure on right coronary arterial flow and its systolic versus diastolic distribution in a variety of congenital heart diseases in children.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: In order to elucidate the underlying adjusting mechanism of human right coronary arterial (RCA) flow to increased right ventricular pressure (RVP) in children, we recorded RCA flow velocity in 24 pediatric cardiac patients at the orifice of its main trunk at the time of heart catheterization using the Doppler guidewire. RESULTS: The ratio of diastolic flow (DF)/total flow (TF), or the proportion of the DF time integral over a total of one cardiac cycle, had a negative correlation with heart rate (HR; r = -0.58, n = 11) in children with normal right ventricular systolic

Spinal stability with anterior or posterior ray threaded fusion cages.

OBJECT: The authors conducted a study to determine if the rigidity supplied to the spine by posterior placement of the Ray threaded fusion cage (TFC) is further enhanced by the placement of pedicle screws and, additionally, if bilateral anteriorly placed TFCs render the spine more rigid than a single anteriorly placed TFC. METHODS: Ten human cadaveric spinal specimens (L2-S1) were affixed within a testing frame. Loads of 1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6 Nm were applied to the spine in six degrees of freedom: flexion-extension, right and left lateral bending, and right and left axial rotation. Motion in an

Electrophysiologic effects of a class I antiarrhythmic agent, cibenzoline, on the refractoriness and conduction of the human atrium in vivo.

We investigated the effects of a class I antiarrhythmic drug, cibenzoline, on human atrial muscle in vivo. Electrophysiologic measurements were performed in 44 patients (mean age 49 +/- 15 years), before and after an intravenous infusion of cibenzoline 1.4 mg/kg in 5 min. Extrastimuli at a basic cycle length (BCL) of 500 ms were delivered from the right atrial appendage. The effective refractory period of the right atrium (ERP-A), the conduction time from the high right atrium to the coronary sinus, maximum conduction delay (Max. CD), repetitive atrial firing zone (RAFZ), fragmented atrial act

Reversed shunting across the ductus arteriosus or atrial septum in utero heralds severe congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to define the significance of Doppler color flow mapping in demonstrating reversal of the direction of the normal physiologic flow across the atrial septum and ductus arteriosus in the human fetus. BACKGROUND: Reversal of the physiologic shunting across the ductus arteriosus or atrial septum in utero (i.e., left to right) can be readily identified by Doppler color flow mapping, complemented by pulsed and continuous wave Doppler information. METHODS: We reviewed echocardiograms recorded at our three institutions from 1988 to 1993, which displayed reversal

Regional distribution of beta 1- and beta 2-adrenoceptors in the failing and nonfailing human heart.

Total beta-adrenoceptor density and beta 1- and beta 2-subtype distribution in right and left atria and in different ventricular regions from 14 failing and seven nonfailing human hearts have been compared. End-stage heart failure was due to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (n = 8) or ischaemic cardiomyopathy (n = 6). In nonfailing hearts the total beta-adrenoceptor density was similar in the right and left atria and in all the ventricular regions studied (about 70 to 80 fmol/mg protein). The beta 1:beta 2-adrenoceptor ratio in both nonfailing atria was similar (about 70:30%) and was signific

Calcium sensitivity and unloaded shortening velocity of hypertrophied and non-hypertrophied skinned human atrial fibres.

The mechanical properties of myocardium of different animals are modified by a chronic increase in haemodynamic load. In this study differences in calcium sensitivity and maximum unloaded shortening velocity of hypertrophic and non-hypertrophic chemically skinned human atrial fibres are characterized. Investigating right atria of 34 patients, possible correlations are studied between preoperative atrial pressure, degree of hypertrophy (estimated from the muscle fibre diameter), calcium responsiveness (pCa50 eliciting half-maximum contraction) and Vmax (unloaded shortening velocity). Hypertroph

Hand Geometry in Forensic Application: Estimating Hand Length Derived from Phalangeal Lengths.

BACKGROUND: The human hand plays a significant role in the identification of sex and identity, especially when partial remains are recovered from crime scenes. This study explores the importance of using digital phalanx lengths to estimate Hand Length (HL), examine sexual dimorphism, and identify the most reliable biometric predictors of sex in the Bengali population. This study collected bilateral palm impressions from 100 university-level students (50 men, 20.18 ± 1.38; 50 women, 19.61 ± 1.48) from North 24 Pargana District. Different phalanx segments were measured and correlated with HL usi

Brain Dynamics Underlying Reaching Movements Under Uncertainty.

Motor responses are influenced by inferred predictability, but it remains unclear how uncertainty, or its inverse, precision, is encoded within motor control networks. In this study, we combined computational modeling of reaching movement response speed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used a cueing paradigm with changing cue predictability (~50%, ~70%, and ~90%) to test how predictive inference about left/right reaching responses affected cortical activity and network connectivity in 28 healthy young adults. Behavioral results showed that the response speed differences be

Functional Connectivity of the Neonatal Cerebellum is Impacted by Sex and Polygenic Liability for Autism.

The cerebellum rapidly integrates with cerebral networks during infancy and shows consistent structural and functional alterations in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), suggesting that early cerebellar development may be consequential for later behavioral and psychiatric outcomes. Yet, little is known about the effect of ASD genetic liability on cerebello-cerebral functional connectivity in infancy or whether effects may differ by biological sex. Here, we leveraged neonatal functional magnetic resonance imaging, genetic, and behavioral follow-up data from the Developing Human Connectome Project (

Performance of Ankle Exoskeletons on Irregular Terrains: Key Design Principles and Benchmarking Tests.

Exoskeletons offer an advanced solution for assisting and rehabilitating physically impaired people. The mechanical design of these devices can significantly affect the kinematics of the user by restricting limb movements. In this study, we present the mechanical design of two new prototypes of ankle exoskeleton with a different number of degrees-of-freedom (DoF) and different torque transmission method. Specifically, the first prototype (S-RANK) accommodates a single DoF in the sagittal plane, whereas the second prototype (M-RANK) extends the functionality to include ankle inversion/eversion

Enhanced Brain Functional Interaction Following BCI-Guided Supernumerary Robotic Finger Training Based on Sixth-Finger Motor Imagery.

Supernumerary robotic finger (SRF) has shown unique advantages in the field of motor augmentation and rehabilitation, while the development of brain computer interface (BCI) technology has provided the possibility for direct control of SRF. However, the neuroplasticity effects of BCI-actuated SRF (BCI-SRF) training based on the "six finger" motor imagery paradigm are still unclear. This study recruited 20 healthy right-handed participants and randomly assigned them to either a BCI-SRF training group or a sham SRF training group. During the testing phase before and after 4 weeks of training, al

The Development of the Umbilical Vein and Its Anatomical and Clinical Significance.

The umbilical vein is one of the most essential vessels in the human embryo. Anatomical structures though may vary in several cases. During the fourth and eighth weeks of gestation, the umbilical cord is formed. Initially, two umbilical arteries and veins exist. During development, the obliteration of the right umbilical vein occurs. The fetus and its liver receive macronutrients and oxygen from the placenta via the umbilical vein, which primarily supplies the left lobe of the liver before branching into the left portal vein and the ductus venosus. The ductus venosus directs blood from the umb

Spermatocytic tumor coexisting with a contralateral inguinoscrotal undifferentiated sarcoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Spermatocytic tumors represent uncommon neoplasms of the testes and are mostly indolent with favorable prognosis in the non-metastatic stage. Rarely, they can undergo sarcomatous transformation, significantly worsening prognosis. This case highlights a patient harboring a testicular spermatocytic tumor and a concomitant sarcoma of the contralateral inguinoscrotal soft tissue, not related to the spermatocytic tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old male patient presented with a left scrotal mass and a suspected right inguinoscrotal hernia. Laboratory values showed a slightly elevat

Tibetan mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes alleviate pulmonary vascular remodeling in hypoxic pulmonary hypertension rats.

Hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) is characterized by progressive pulmonary vasoconstriction, vascular remodeling, and right ventricular hypertrophy, causing right heart failure. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of exosomes from Tibetan umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells on HPH via the TGF-β1/Smad2/3 pathway, comparing them with exosomes from Han Chinese individuals. An HPH rat model was established in vivo, and a hypoxia-induced injury in the rat pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (rPASMCs) was simulated in vitro. Exosomes from human umbilical cord mesenchymal s

[Multiple dural arteriovenous fistulas showing isolated subcortical white matter T2 hyperintensity with gadolinium enhancement].

We describe a 44-year-old man with a complaint of atonic seizures of the left upper limb, followed by generalized seizures. Brain MRI showed isolated juxtacortical white matter T2 hyperintensity with gadolinium (Gd) enhancement of the adjacent cortical gray matter and subcortical white matter in the right frontal convexity. Treatment with levetiracetam was effective for seizure suppression, and he had no other neurological abnormalities. Human leukocyte antigen typing revealed B54 and Cw1, which indicated the possibility of neuro-Sweet disease. However, a general examination, which included vi

Ultrasound-mediated HGF Gene Microbubbles Mitigate Hyperkinetic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Rabbits.

AIM: Hyperkinetic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a complication of congenital heart disease. Gene therapy is a new experimental treatment for PAH, and ultrasound-mediated gene-carrying microbubble targeted delivery is a promising development for gene transfer. METHODS: This study successfully established a hyperkinetic PAH rabbit model by a common carotid artery and jugular vein shunt using the cuff style method. Liposome microbubbles carrying the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) gene were successfully constructed. An in vitro experiment evaluated the appropriate intensity of ultrason

The impact of wearing a KN95 face mask on human brain function: evidence from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Face masks are widely used in daily life because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this study was to explore the impact of wearing face masks on brain functions by using resting-state functional MRI (RS-fMRI). METHODS: Scanning data from 15 healthy subjects (46.20 ± 6.67 years) were collected in this study. Each subject underwent RS-fMRI scans under two comparative conditions, wearing a KN95 mask and natural breathing (no mask). The amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and functional connectivity under the two conditions were analyzed and then compared using the

Venous waveform analysis detects acute right ventricular failure in a rat respiratory arrest model.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral intravenous analysis (PIVA) has been shown to be more sensitive than central venous pressure (CVP) for detecting hemorrhage and volume overload. We hypothesized that PIVA is superior to CVP for detecting right ventricular (RV) failure in a rat model of respiratory arrest. METHODS: Eight Wistar rats were studied in accordance with the ARRIVE guidelines. CVP, mean arterial pressure (MAP), and PIVA were recorded. Respiratory arrest was achieved with IV Rocuronium. PIVA utilizes Fourier transform to quantify the amplitude of the peripheral venous waveform, expressed as the
