Quantitative assessment of inter-individual variability in fMRI-based human brain atlas.

BACKGROUND: Inter-individual variability is an inherent and ineradicable feature of group-level brain atlases that undermines their reliability for clinical and other applications. To date, there have been no reports quantifying inter-individual variability in brain atlases. METHODS: In the present study, we compared inter-individual variability in nine brain atlases by task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) mapping of motor and temporal lobe language regions in both cerebral hemispheres. We analyzed complete motor and language task-based fMRI and T1 data for 893 young, health

Individualized video recommendation modulates functional connectivity between large scale networks.

With the emergence of AI-powered recommender systems and their extensive use in the video streaming service, questions and concerns also arise. Why can recommended video content continuously capture users' attention? What is the impact of long-term exposure to personalized video content on one's behaviors and brain functions? To address these questions, we designed an fMRI experiment presenting participants with personally recommended videos and generally recommended ones. To examine how large-scale networks were modulated by personalized video content, graph theory analysis was applied to inv

Comparison of Thyroid Function in Lead-Poisoned Patients and Healthy Individuals in Eastern Iran.

Lead (Pb) is a prevalent environmental toxic metal that may harmfully affect the function of the thyroid gland. Our information about the effects of lead on thyroid function in lead poisoning is limited. The present study aimed to evaluate thyroid function in lead-poisoned patients compared with the healthy group. In this study, two groups of lead poisoning subjects (lead concentrations ≥ 25 μg/dL) (n = 56) (HBLC group) and randomly selected age and gender-matched healthy individuals with lower blood lead concentrations (BLC < 10 μg/dL) (n = 58) (LBLC group) were included. Thyroid function tes

Neural mechanisms of prospection in individuals with schizotypal traits, autistic traits, or depressive symptoms.

Prospection refers to the ability to mentally construct future events, which is closely related to motivation and anhedonia. The neural underpinning of impaired prospection in psychiatric populations remains unclear. We recruited 34 individuals with autistic traits (AT), 27 individuals with schizotypal traits (ST), 31 individuals with depressive symptoms (DS), and 35 controls. Participants completed a prospection task while undergoing functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). We found that regions of the "default mode network" including the medial frontal gyrus, the posterior cingulate cort

Increased Risk of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Individuals with High Weight Variability.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss through lifestyle modification is recommended for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Recent studies have suggested that repeated loss and gain of weight is associated with worse health outcomes. This study aimed to examine the association between weight variability and the risk of NAFLD in patients without diabetes. METHODS: We examined the health-checkup data of 30,708 participants who had undergone serial examinations between 2010 and 2014. Weight variability was assessed using coefficient of variation and the average successive variability of we

Functional Connectivity during Encoding Predicts Individual Differences in Long-Term Memory.

What is the neural basis of individual differences in the ability to hold information in long-term memory (LTM)? Here, we first characterize two whole-brain functional connectivity networks based on fMRI data acquired during an n-back task that robustly predict individual differences in two important forms of LTM, recognition and recollection. We then focus on the recognition memory model and contrast it with a working memory model. Although functional connectivity during the n-back task also predicts working memory performance and the two networks have some shared components, they are also la

Patients with chronic pain exhibit individually unique cortical signatures of pain encoding.

Chronic pain is characterised by an ongoing and fluctuating intensity over time. Here, we investigated how the trajectory of the patients' endogenous pain is encoded in the brain. In repeated functional MRI (fMRI) sessions, 20 patients with chronic back pain and 20 patients with chronic migraine were asked to continuously rate the intensity of their endogenous pain. Linear mixed effects models were used to disentangle cortical processes related to pain intensity and to pain intensity changes. At group level, we found that the intensity of pain in patients with chronic back pain is encoded in t

Depression and increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in individuals with obesity.

UNLABELLED: Abstract. AIMS: The longitudinal relationship between depression and the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is uncertain. We examined: (a) the association between depressive symptoms and incident hepatic steatosis (HS), both with and without liver fibrosis; and (b) the influence of obesity on this association. METHODS: A cohort of 142 005 Korean adults with neither HS nor excessive alcohol consumption at baseline were followed for up to 8.9 years. The validated Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression score (CES-D) was assessed at baseline, and subjects were categorised

Nomograms for Individualized Evaluation of Prognosis in Adrenocortical Carcinomas for the Elderly: A Population-Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is extremely rare in elderly patients. Thus, this study aimed to identify the incidence rate and develop nomogram models for predicting survival in elderly ACC patients. METHODS: Data of ACC patients aged >60 years from 1975 to 2016 were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results dataset. The national incidence rate was estimated, and survival was subjected to Kaplan-Meier analysis. A multivariate Cox regression model was used to identify predictors of survival. Nomograms were generated to predict survival, calibrated and internall

Action inhibition in individuals with high obsessive-compulsive trait of incompleteness: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Missing action completion signals are assumed to trigger repetitive behavior and feelings of the action "not being right". This proposal is based mostly on individual's self-reports. Here, we investigated the influence of experimentally manipulated action completion experience and the obsessive-compulsive (OC) trait of incompleteness on behavioral and neurophysiological measures of action inhibition. METHODS: Action completion was manipulated in an adapted Go/NoGo task, and OC trait incompleteness was assessed in healthy participants. More commission errors and faster responses we

Interpersonal dysfunction in individuals high in chronic worry: relations with interpersonal problem-solving.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal dysfunction has been proposed as an important maintenance factor in chronic worry and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Perceptions of problems and the problem-solving process as threatening, and unhelpful (e.g. avoidant, impulsive) problem-solving styles are implicated in worry and have also been suggested to be associated with dysfunctional interpersonal styles. AIMS: The present study assessed the relationships between interpersonal dysfunction and problem-solving orientation, approach, and effectiveness in a sample of individuals high in chronic worry and inves

Potential Transdiagnostic Lipid Mediators of Inflammatory Activity in Individuals With Serious Mental Illness.

Mental disorders are heterogeneous and psychiatric comorbidities are common. Previous studies have suggested a link between inflammation and mental disorders. This link can manifest as increased levels of proinflammatory mediators in circulation and as signs of neuroinflammation. Furthermore, there is strong evidence that individuals suffering from psychiatric disorders have increased risk of developing metabolic comorbidities. Our group has previously shown that, in a cohort of low-functioning individuals with serious mental disorders, there is increased expression of genes associated with th
