In this article we present the findings of a qualitative examination of 30 mothers of very-low-birth-weight babies. Interviews conducted with the mothers when the babies were still in neonatal hospitalization show that virtually all the mothers described their delivery both as a traumatic event, and as a nonevent in which they felt that they barely participated. Most of them blamed themselves for not carrying full term, some blamed others, and some believed the premature delivery saved their baby's life. BACKGROUND: The training of elite infantry recruits takes a year or more. Stress fractures are known to be endemic in their basic training and the clinical presentation of tibial, femoral, and metatarsal stress fractures are different. Stress fracture incidence during the subsequent progressively more demanding training is not known. BACKGROUND: The causative role of diffuse macular edema in various etiologies is often undetermined.
OBJECTIVES: To describe an association between extrafoveal vitreous traction and non-diabetic diffuse macular edema secondary to various ocular entities.
METHODS: In a retrospective study of eyes with non-diabetic diffuse macular edema, charts and optical coherence tomography scans demonstrating extrafoveal vitreous traction were analyzed. Excluded were diabetic patients and eyes that had vitreofoveal traction. A control group (n = 12) allowed for mapping of normal macular thickness.

The current study examined gender differences in personal and psychological characteristics among drug-abstinent Israeli inmates. The study focuses primarily on three personal variables: sense of coherence (SOC), anxiety, and hostility. Four of 41 burns from microwave ovens, presented by an international survey in 1986, were due to exploding microwave-heated eggs. A subset of postoperative recurrent clubfeet was isolated in a group of patients 4 to 8 years old. Twenty-seven consecutive patients who underwent redo surgery consisting of complete soft tissue clubfoot release combined with a calcaneocuboid fusion were reviewed for this study. Twenty-six feet of 27 feet in 20 patients had a long-term good result, suggesting that this procedure is the one of choice for this age group.

Ninety-nine infants from multiple gestation births and weighing < or = 1500 g at birth were matched with infants from single births to clarify the relationship of multiple gestation to retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Speech, language, and communication disorders are prominent reasons for referrals to a child development center. From 1984 to 1988, 1,090 preschool children were referred to our child development center, which serves the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Of all referrals, 432 (41%) were primarily due to speech, language, and communication problems. One hundred patients with head injuries who showed diffuse axonal injury on computed tomographic scans are reported. Evaluation of the Glasgow Coma Score, pupillary signs, and computed tomographic findings on admission led to an improved ability to forecast outcomes. Our relatively good results as compared with other series, can be explained by the high proportion of children and by the liberal use of computed tomography to evaluate head injuries, thus revealing that concussion may sometimes be regarded as an early form of diffuse axonal injury.

During a 10-month period, skin culture specimens were taken from 1680 healthy outpatients with a variety of community-acquired skin infections. Staphylococcus aureus was found in 1035 (61.6%) of these patients. In vitro resistance to methicillin and erythromycin was 1.0% and 42.9%, respectively. Resistance rates to erythromycin in patients with furunculosis and impetigo were 51.5% and 26.2%, respectively (p less than 0.001).
