Dietary protein considerations in a sustainable and ageing world: a narrative review with a focus on greenhouse gas emissions and skeletal muscle remodelling and maintenance.

The rise in interest of plant-based protein foods has been meteoric, often leading to calls to adopt exclusively plant-based diets to reduce the intake of animal-based foods. In addition to impacts on human health, moving to an exclusively plant-based (or indeed animal-based) diet may have detrimental implications in terms of environmental sustainability. The impact of a rapid growth in global population on the sustainability of food systems poses clear consequences for the environment and thus warrants careful consideration at a national and, in some cases, global level. The requirement for h

Evidence for a host switching in the maintenance of canid rabies variant in two wild carnivore species in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa.

Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease that causes at least 59 000 human deaths worldwide annually, with 95% of the cases occurring in the developing countries of Asia and Africa. There are two Lyssavirus rabies (RABV) variants circulating in South Africa, notably the canid and mongoose RABV biotypes. The canid RABV biotype is maintained in the domestic dog and two wild carnivore species, the black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) and the bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis). The yellow mongoose, a member of the Herpestidae family, is a reservoir and vector species for the mongoose RABV biotype.

Perioperative changes in neurocognitive and Alzheimer's disease-related cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in older patients randomised to isoflurane or propofol for anaesthetic maintenance.

BACKGROUND: Animal studies have shown that isoflurane and propofol have differential effects on Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and memory, although it is unclear whether this occurs in humans. METHODS: This was a nested randomised controlled trial within a prospective cohort study; patients age ≥60 yr undergoing noncardiac/non-neurological surgery were randomised to isoflurane or propofol for anaesthetic maintenance. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was collected via lumbar puncture before, 24 h, and 6 weeks after surgery. Cognitive testing was performed before and 6 weeks after surgery. Nonpara…

Hypertension in Patients Treated With In-Center Maintenance Hemodialysis: Current Evidence and Future Opportunities: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Nearly 500 000 individuals are treated with maintenance hemodialysis for kidney failure in the United States, and roughly half will die of cardiovascular causes. Hypertension, an important and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is observed in >80% of patients treated with maintenance hemodialysis. The pathophysiology of hypertension in patients treated with maintenance hemodialysis is multifactorial and differs from that seen in other patient populations. Factors that contribute to hypertension in patients treated with hemodialysis include volume overload, arterial stiffness, e…

The effect of warm and humidified gas insufflation in gynecological laparoscopy on maintenance of body temperature: a prospective randomized controlled multi-arm trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is defined as a decrease in body core temperature to below 36 °C. If intraoperative heat-preserving measures are omitted, a patient's temperature will fall by 1 - 2 °C. Even mild forms of intraoperative hypothermia can lead to a marked increase in morbidity and mortality. Using warm and humidified gas insufflation in laparoscopy may help in the maintenance of intraoperative body temperature. METHODS: In this prospective randomized controlled study, we investigated effects of temperature and humidity of the insufflation gas on intra- and postoperative temperature manage…

Saving the brain after mild-to-moderate traumatic injury: A report on new insights of the physiology underlying adequate maintenance of cerebral perfusion.

ABSTRACT: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in civilian trauma and battlefield settings. It has been classified across a continuum of dysfunctions, with as much as 80% to 90% of cases diagnosed as mild to moderate in combat casualties. In this report, a framework is presented that focuses on the potential benefits for acute noninvasive treatment of reduced cerebral perfusion associated with mild TBI by harnessing the natural transfer of negative intrathoracic pressure during inspiration. This process is known as intrathoracic pressure regulation

Cytolytic Activity of CAR T Cells and Maintenance of Their CD4+ Subset Is Critical for Optimal Antitumor Activity in Preclinical Solid Tumor Models.

Correlative studies of clinical studies for hematological malignancies have implicated that less differentiated, CD8+-dominant CAR T cell products have greater antitumor activity. Here, we have investigated whether the differentiation status of CAR T cell products affects their antitumor activity in preclinical models of solid tumors. We explored if different activation/expansion protocols, as well as different co-stimulatory domains in the CAR construct, influence the short- and long-term efficacy of CAR T cells against HER2-positive tumors. We generated T cell products that range from the mo

The Mouse Levator Auris Longus Muscle: An Amenable Model System to Study the Role of Postsynaptic Proteins to the Maintenance and Regeneration of the Neuromuscular Synapse.

The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is the peripheral synapse that controls the coordinated movement of many organisms. The NMJ is also an archetypical model to study synaptic morphology and function. As the NMJ is the primary target of neuromuscular diseases and traumatic injuries, the establishment of suitable models to study the contribution of specific postsynaptic muscle-derived proteins on NMJ maintenance and regeneration is a permanent need. Considering the unique experimental advantages of the levator auris longus (LAL) muscle, here we present a method allowing for efficient electroporati…

Identification of Complex Pneumonia during the Outbreak of COVID-19: Bacterial Pneumonia Combined with Acute Eosinophilic Pneumonia in Patients with Maintenance Hemodialysis.

It is of crucial importance to diagnose patients in a timely and clear manner during the outbreak of COVID-19. Different causes of pneumonia makes it difficult to differentiate COVID-19 from others. Hemodialysis patients are a special group of people in this outbreak. We present a successfully treated case of a patient with maintenance hemodialysis from acute eosinophilic pneumonia for using meropenem when treating bacterial pneumonia, avoiding possible panic and waste of quarantine materials in dialysis centers.

Genetic polymorphisms in the opioid receptor delta 1 (OPRD1) gene are associated with methadone dose in methadone maintenance treatment for heroin dependence.

Delta opioid receptor (DOR) is well known to be involved in heroin dependence. This study tested the hypothesis that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the opioid receptor delta 1 (OPRD1) gene coding region are associated with treatment responses in a methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) cohort in Taiwan. Three hundred forty-four MMT patients were recruited. Diastolic/systolic blood pressure, heart rate, methadone dosage, and plasma concentrations of methadone were recorded. Twenty-five SNPs located within the OPRD1 genetic region were selected and genotyped from the genomic DNA of all 3…
