We have presented a case in which the presumed pressure effects of tissue expansion caused multiple nondisplaced rib fractures of the anterior thorax in a patient undergoing breast reconstruction. Although the deformity was severe, a satisfactory cosmetic result was obtained and there have been no clinically significant sequelae during a 1-year follow-up period. In this study we have evaluated 301 internal mammary lymphoscintigraphies. The results were compared with the histology of internal mammary lymphoscintigraphies, lymphatic chain and axillary lymph nodes, with the anatomo-pathological stage of the disease, with primary tumor site, and also with patients survival. The influence of breast surgery and radiotherapy on the internal breast is shown in the results of the said 301 internal breast lymphscannings. We understand LCMI as a procedure that helps to evaluate the disease stage, to plan therapeutics, to provide a prognosis factor.

This report describes the short-term results of a population-based screening programme--the DOM project--during the years 1975-1980. Six hundred mammograms from 307 consecutive symptomatic patients with a firm retrospective diagnosis were evaluated blindly and independently by two observers. Each observer identified 43 of 47 tumors (91 per cent) with predictive values of 0.63 and 0.68, respectively, for the positive statement, and 0.98 for the negative statement. Sixty-two women had excisional breast biopsy for areas of microcalcification detected by mammography with no associated palpable mass. Carcinoma was discovered in 20 patients (32 percent). One hundred consecutive patients who underwent bilateral adrenalectomy for metastatic breast cancer with at least a 2 year "tumor-free" interval and with symptomatic bony, local-regional, pleural, or discrete pulmonary or mediastinal metastases had objective remission rates of 65 per cent at 6 months, 48 per cent at 12 months, 28 per cent at 18 months, and 16 per cent at 24 months.

On the basis of 6 clinical cases where a breast carcinoma metastasis or another breast tumour were discovered during a routine preoperative medical examination or during reconstructive surgery, the author emphasises the role of plastic surgeons in detecting recurrent disease in patients consulting them for reconstructive surgery after breast amputation. Plastic surgeons who probably perform more breast operations than any other specialist should have a thorough knowledge of all the diseases and tumours which may affect these organs.

PURPOSE: The aim of this explorative study was to evaluate the impact of selenium in the treatment of lymphedema after radiotherapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 1996 and June 2001, 12 patients with edema of the arm and 36 patients with edema of the head-and-neck region were treated with selenium for therapy-related lymphedema. Of these 36 patients, 20 had interstitial endolaryngeal edema associated with stridor and dyspnea. All patients received sodium selenite over 4 to 6 weeks.
