Detection of sequences homologous to human retroviral DNA in multiple sclerosis by gene amplification.

Retinal venous sheathing in optic neuritis. Its significance for the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis.

A systematic study of the frequency of retinal vascular abnormalities and cells in the media has been made in 50 patients presenting with acute optic neuritis. Abnormalities were found in 14 (fluorescein leakage in 10, perivenous sheathing in 6, cells in the vitreous in 6 and in the anterior chamber in 4; in 2 the cells in the media were seen without vascular changes). Viral IgM antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid in patients with multiple sclerosis and controls.

Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 28 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), 14 with other neurological diseases (OND) and 31 control subjects with tension headache were analysed for presence of IgM antibodies against measles, mumps and varicellae zoster by a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Endemic clustering of multiple sclerosis in time and place, 1934-1984. Confirmation of a hypothesis.

The occurrence of multiple sclerosis in clustered groups of cases that are often related to others in time and place has been observed on several occasions in the last 50 years. Selected clusters are here reviewed in relation to suspected sources of heavy metal (mercury, lead) poisoning as background for the analysis of the 1983-1985 "outbreak" of 30-40 cases of multiple sclerosis in Key West, Florida. Evidence is presented that the time-place clustering resulted from environmental pollution stemming from a nearby dump pile of rocky debris. The probable mechanism is discussed.

Isolated condyloma acuminatum of the bladder in a patient with multiple sclerosis: etiological and pathological considerations.

We report a solitary condyloma acuminatum of the bladder without cutaneous, anogenital or urethral involvement in a patient with multiple sclerosis who had an indwelling suprapubic catheter. The lesion was treated by endoscopic resection.

The significance of delayed long-loop responses to ankle displacement for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

The present study compares the results of sensory evoked potentials after stimulation of the tibial nerve with measurements of short (M1), medium (M2) and long-loop latency (M3) responses of leg muscles in 42 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis. EMG responses were elicited by a movable platform which was tilted in pitch toe-up around the subject's ankle joint. Association of CSF IgG concentration and immunoglobulin allotype in multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis.

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum from 64 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 47 patients with monosymptomatic optic neuritis (ON) were analyzed for the distribution of allotypic determinants on IgG and compared to similar samples from 51 patients with other neurological diseases (OND) as well as to serum samples from 97 healthy controls. [Normalization of VEP in multiple sclerosis? Course observation in 50 of 500 MS patients].

Serial recordings of pattern-reversal VEPs have been performed in 50 of 500 MS patients in 4 or more occasions within the last 5 years. 49/96 eyes initially displayed a normal and 47/96 a prolonged P2 latency. A further delay was observed in 9 eyes, while in another 9 eyes the latency improved entering the normal range but in 4 eyes. In two eyes, only, shape and peak configuration normalized too. These results demonstrate the rarity of true normalisation of the contrast VEP after optical neuritis in MS.

Cyclophosphamide levels in serum and spinal fluid of multiple sclerosis patients treated with immunosuppression.

The cyclophosphamide content of urine, serum and spinal fluid of immuno-suppressed multiple sclerosis patients was determined using a newly developed off-line combination of high pressure liquid chromatography and field desorption mass spectrometry. Although urinary excretion of the drug varied considerably between patients, the levels in serum and spinal fluid were in the same range, a relationship that may facilitate control of the dosage.

Study of the IgG oligoclonal bands in cerebral spinal fluid in multiple sclerosis by electroimmunofixation.

22 MS CSFs and 20 control CSFs were studied using an electroimmunofixation (EIF) technique on Cellulose Acetate strips. The oligoclonal gammaglobulin bands on MS CSFs were composed almost exclusively of complete IgG molecules. In a few MS CSFs bands composed of free heavy chains and of free light chains were observed. The bands were very often (93 percent) found to be homogeneous as far as the light chain type was concerned. An epidemiological and clinical study of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Orkney and Shetland Islands showed that the prevalence rate of the disease is the highest in the world (309 and 184/100 000, respectively). The clinical entity, MS, is similar to that found in other parts of the world, except that optic neuritis not followed by MS is rare. Analysis of death certificates indicated that MS has probably occurred at the same rate in these islands for nearly a century. Lymphocyte transformation in the presence of myelin basic protein in multiple sclerosis and control subjects.

The transformation of lymphocytes in vitro in the presence of human myelin basic protein has been investigated in normal people, patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and controls with other neurological diseases. There was little or no response at low concentrations (1--10 microgram/ml) but significant transformation at higher concentrations (100--1000 microgram/ml) in all three groups. Normal functional capacity of blood lymphocytes in multiple sclerosis measured by stimulation with mitogens.

The effect of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and pokeweed mitogen (PWM) on blood lymphocytes was studied in multiple sclerosis, patients with acute CNS infections, and healthy controls. No significant differences in lymphocyte proliferation were registered between the group of MS patients and the two other groups, irrespective of mitogen used. The ratio between the PWM and PHA responses did not differ significantly from the ratios in the two other groups.
