BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by dermatophytes. In Central Europe, it is mainly caused by zoophilic dermatophytes, as, for example Microsporum (M) canis or Trichophyton (T) mentagrophytes and increasingly by anthropophilic fungi. T tonsurans was commonly related to the Tinea gladiatorum, where transmission occurred between infected persons or via contaminated floors.
OBJECTIVE: Reporting the transmission of this highly contagious dermatophyte for the first time via beard shaving and hairdressing in barber shops in Germany.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 18

Griseofulvin and terbinafine are considered effective first-line therapies for tinea capitis (TC). Haematological dyscrasias and hepatic injury are possible adverse effects with both drugs. There is a debate in the literature regarding the necessity of laboratory monitoring during griseofulvin and terbinafine treatment. We aimed at assessing the prevalence and severity of haematological and hepatic laboratory test abnormalities in a paediatric cohort of African immigrants in Tel-Aviv with TC who were treated with Terbinafine or Griseofulvin. We conducted a retrospective study of all TC cases d

Cryptococcosis is a serious and sometimes fatal fungal disease caused by Cryptococcus species. Worldwide, it is estimated to kill over 180 000 annually, with 75% of deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. Though cryptococcal infections are rare in otherwise healthy individuals, there have been reported cases in immunocompetent persons. Most cases occur in individuals who have weakened immune systems, particularly those with advanced HIV/AIDS, thus making West Africa a potential hotspot of the disease. Despite this, there is no recent review article with a focus on published findings on cryptoc

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic granulomatous fungal infection caused by melanised or brown-pigmented fungi. It can lead to chronic persistent infections and may cause incapacity for labour in some severe clinical forms. The optimal therapy for CBM is still uncertain. Here, we reported the case of a 66-year-old male who has had red plaque and recurrent keratinised protrusions on his right forearm for 20 years. He was treated orally with terbinafine, itraconazole and isotretinoin. He also received carbon dioxide(CO2 ) laser to eradicate the keratinised protrusions and promote the penetra

BACKGROUND: The number of patients infected with Aspergillus rose dramatically in recent years. However, studies on the clinical spectrum and antifungal susceptibilities of non-classical (non-fumigatus, non-flavus, non-niger and non-terreus) pathogenic Aspergillus species are very limited.
OBJECTIVES: We examined the clinical spectrum and antifungal susceptibilities of 34 non-duplicated, non-classical Aspergillus isolates collected from Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai.
METHODS: The Aspergillus isolates were identified by internal transcribed spacer, partial BenA and partial CaM sequencing a

BACKGROUND: Tinea imbricata, a rare form of tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton concentricum, is endemic to the T'boli tribe in the Southern Philippines. Temporary remissions and limited access to antifungal medications make its treatment a pressing public health concern. Anecdotal reports about the use of Senna alata leaf decoction as treatment exist.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of community-prepared S alata leaf decoction in the treatment of tinea imbricata.
METHODS: Tinea imbricata patients were instructed to apply S alata leaf decoction for 4 weeks (28 ± 3 days). Disease sever

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus neoformans is the leading cause of cryptococcal meningitis in HIV/AIDS patients. As infections in humans are predominantly caused by the inhalation of basidiospores from environmental sources, therefore, analysing the population structure of both clinical and environmental populations of C neoformans can increase our understanding of the molecular epidemiology of cryptococcosis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the genotypic diversity and antifungal susceptibility profile of a large collection of C neoformans isolates (n = 523) from clinical and environmental sources in Indi

BACKGROUND: (1-3)-b-D-glucan (BDG) is a fungal cell wall component and, in the absence of invasive fungal infection, a novel biomarker for microbial translocation of endogenous fungal products from the gastrointestinal tract into systemic circulation. However, its value as a marker of fungal translocation is limited by a concern that plant BDG-rich food influences blood BDG levels.
METHODS: We conducted a pilot clinical trial to evaluate the impact of a standardised oral BDG challenge on blood BDG levels in participants with and without elevated microbial translocation. We enrolled 14 partici

BACKGROUND: Determining the extent of cryptococcal disease (CD) is key to therapeutic management. Treatment with fluconazole is only recommended for localised pulmonary disease. Induction therapy with amphotericin B (AmB) and flucytosine is recommended for disease at other sites, irrespective of central nervous system (CNS) involvement, but this is not often followed in patients without meningitis. In this study, we compared treatment and mortality between patients with CD of the CNS and other extrapulmonary (OE) sites.
METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-centre study of all hospitalised

BACKGROUND: Candida-associated infections put a significant burden on western healthcare systems. Development of (multi-)resistant fungi can become untreatable and threaten especially vulnerable target groups, such as the immunocompromised.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed antifungal susceptibility and explored possible influence factors of clinical Candida isolates collected from Austrian hospitals between 2007 and 2016.
METHODS: Thousand three hundred and sixty clinical Candida spp. isolated from blood cultures were subjected to antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) in a liquid-handling aided co

A paradigm shift of candidiasis from Candida albicans to non-albicans Candida species has fundamentally increased with the advent of C. auris. C. auris, despite being a newly emerged multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen, is associated with severe invasive infections and outbreaks with high mortality rates. Initially reported from Japan in 2009, C. auris have now been found in different countries on all the continents except Antarctica. Due to its capability of nosocomial transmission and forming adherent biofilms on clinically important substrates, a high number of related hospital outbreaks ha

Candidaemia is the most common clinical presentation of invasive candidiasis and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Candiduria is a predictor for candidaemia; however, patient characteristics that are associated with concurrent candidaemia in the setting of candiduria are unclear. Identifying these characteristics could aid in the early detection of systemic disease. We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of hospitalised patients with candiduria at our institution over a 13-year period. Our evaluation of patient characteristics included demographics, comorbidities, medications,
