Gamified Assessment of Cognitive Impulsivity in Eating Disorders and Mental Ill-Health: Mixed Methods Study Incorporating Lived Experience Co-Design and Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impulsivity is a multifaceted construct associated with symptom severity, functional impairment, and poor quality of life in eating disorders (EDs) and mental ill-health. However, objective assessment of cognitive impulsivity is piecemeal and complex, with many assessment tools lacking psychometric evaluation and ecological validity. Furthermore, validated assessment tools are rarely perceived to be engaging or meaningful by individuals who complete them, limiting their utility in research and forming a barrier to clinical translation. Thus, although cognitive impulsivity

How do speech-language pathologists assess and treat spoken discourse after TBI? A survey of clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Spoken discourse is commonly affected after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although guidelines recommend prioritizing discourse-level skills in cognitive communication management, previous literature has highlighted challenges in managing discourse clinically. Little is known about how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) assess and treat discourse after TBI. AIMS: To investigate current SLP practice to determine the alignment of clinical practice with research evidence and recommendations. METHODS & PROCEDURES: This online survey consisted of 30 questions on SLPs' practice with di

Immersive Technology for Cognitive-Motor Training in Parkinson's Disease.

UNLABELLED: Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease in which the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons (DA) leads to initially sporadic and eventually widespread damage of the nervous system resulting in significant musculoskeletal and cognitive deterioration. Loss of motor function alongside increasing cognitive impairment is part of the natural disease progression. Gait is often considered an automatic activity; however, walking is the result of a delicate balance of multiple systems which maintain the body's center of mass over an ever-changing base of support

Associations between significant head injury and persisting disability and violent crime in women in prison in Scotland, UK: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of head injury is estimated to be as high as 55% in women in prison and might be a risk factor for violent offending, but evidence is equivocal. The extent of persisting disability is unknown, making decisions about service needs difficult. The UN recognises vulnerabilities in women in prison, but does not include head injury. This study aimed to investigate relationships among head injury, comorbidities, disability, and offending in women in prison. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, women were recruited between Feb 2, 2018, and Sept 30, 2019, from four prison

Scaling an intervention for the engagement of people with HIV who inject drugs into care in Viet Nam: an implementation-effectiveness, cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Governmental agencies often implement evidence-based interventions with a one-size-fits-all approach, which ignores site differe … nts, with 14 (2%) dying before baseline assessment. INTERPRETATION: A tailored approach with rapid needs assessment before and during implementation to address local testing site barriers in Viet Nam improved fidelity of SNaP delivery. The tailored approach had a small effect on ART initiation; viral suppression improved substantially. FUNDING: US National Insti …

Ambulatory Parathyroidectomy for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism at a Large Dialysis Program in Toronto: A Program Report.

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM: Operative wait times for non-oncology-related procedures continue to rise in Canada, and this was further exacerbated by … med that included nephrologists, endocrine surgeons, nurses, and patient care managers to conduct a needs assessment. It was identified that patients had long wait times, and to address that gap in care, a protocol was developed to identify suitable patients requiring treatment. The teams created a plan to coordinate patient care and transfers. A clinical tool and …

Responsible Ownership and Welfare Indicators for Dogs and Cats in Rural Lithuania: Self-Reported Practices and In-Person Assessment.

Dogs and cats are increasingly regarded as companion animals and family members, but companionship requires more than affection: it also entails responsibility for their health, reproduction, housing and behavioural needs. Responsible ownership and welfare in rural Baltic and Eastern European settings remain poorly studied. The study included 383 Lithuanian owners (338 rural, 45 urban) and welfare assessments of 85 animals from 53 rural households using an adapted Animal Welfare Assessment Grid. Animal numbers per household differed significantly by residence (p = 0.0008), with 73.1% of rural

Microfluidics, 3D bioprinted scaffold and organ-on-chip with biosensing activated therapeutic strategies for diabetic wound healing.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) represent one of the most severe complications of diabetes, arising from a complex systemic combination of neuropathy, vascular impairment, and impaired wound healing. These chronic wounds carry a high risk of infection, amputation, and mortality, which often leads to severe ulceration and amputation. Conventional diagnostic and monitoring strategies frequently fail to capture the dynamic microenvironment of DFUs, limiting timely therapeutic intervention. Recent advances in microfluidics and organ-on-a-chip technologies provide transformative opportunities for model

Longitudinal Pilot Study of Progressive Urethral Sub-Obstruction in a Canine Model: Bladder Functional and Structural Changes and Exploratory Evaluation of Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) may lead to detrusor decompensation through progressive bladder remodeling. Most experimental studies rely on acutely induced BOO in rodents. Since progressive obstruction better reflects the condition, non-lethal models are needed to investigate chronic obstruction pathophysiology and evaluate regenerative therapies. This exploratory study aimed to evaluate (1) a progressive BOO model induced by an artificial urethral sphincter (AUS) in 2 dogs and (2) the systemic administration of autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) after obstruction re

Expert consensus on the role of immunotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: clinical and economic perspectives from the GCC region.

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy globally but poses a disproportionate clinical and economic burden in endemic regions, including parts of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Patients with recurrent or metastatic NPC (RM-NPC) often present with advanced disease and limited therapeutic options, historically relying on platinum-based chemotherapy with modest survival benefit and substantial toxicity. Recent advances in immunotherapy have begun to reshape the treatment landscape. AREAS COVERED: This position paper reviews the evolving role of immunotherapy in RM-

From Environmental Evidence to Biomarker Selection: A Structured Decision-Support Process for Human Biomonitoring Studies in Contaminated Sites.

Human Biomonitoring (HBM) is a key tool for assessing human exposure to environmental contaminants and identifying early biological changes potentially associated with adverse health effects. However, as contaminated sites are characterized by multiple pollutants, exposure pathways and biological targets, a structured decision-support process is required to guide exposure assessment, biomarker selection, and early health-risk evaluation. This manuscript does not report biomonitoring results but describes the methodological process used to design the INSINERGIA_RT HBM study in two contaminated

Chronic graft-versus-host disease: Current situation and unmet needs - A European position statement.

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) remains the leading cause of late morbidity and non-relapse mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, despite major advances in transplant techniques and supportive care. This European position statement provides a comprehensive and forward-looking synthesis of the evolving biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of cGVHD, while highlighting critical unmet needs that impede progress. cGVHD arises from a complex interplay of immune dysregulation, aberrant tissue repair, and progressive fibrosis, resulting in a heterogeneous

Exploring patient characteristics and departmental factors for those who 'did not wait' to be seen and treated in the emergency department - the DNW study.

BACKGROUND: Patients who did not wait (DNW) for care in Emergency Departments (EDs) are individuals who present seeking treatment but leave before medical assessment. This cohort is an important focus for emergency research, as DNW events may reflect barriers to timely care, pose clinical and safety risks, and provide insight into broader system pressures within emergency services. METHODS: Retrospective study of DNW patients presenting to a metropolitan tertiary ED between January 1 and December 31, 2023. Descriptive statistics were generated for clinical and treatment variables, and multiva

The Mediating Role of Alcohol Use Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Delinquency Among Youth in the Legal System.

Rates of alcohol use and exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are elevated among youth in the legal system (YILS) compared to their non-legally involved peers. Exposure to ACEs has been associated with later alcohol use and delinquency, and YILS often engage in delinquent behavior while under the influence of alcohol. The associations between ACEs, alcohol use, and delinquency among YILS are complex and multidirectional; research has yet to explore how these experiences and behaviors influence each other over time, or whether they differ based upon the reason for legal system invol
