A detailed review was made of the histopathology of 227 tumours taken from 261 women under 45 years of age with breast cancer. The tumours were classified as follows: whether oral contraceptives had been used at any time; and whether oral contraceptives had been used before first term pregnancy. All analyses were adjusted for the effects of age. Overall, 201 (88.5%) of tumours were infiltrating ductal in type, 19 (8.4%) were infiltrating lobular, and seven (3.1%) were in situ ductal. Thirty-five patients with stage I melanoma of the scalp were retrospectively reviewed and compared with similar patients with melanoma of the extremity and trunk. Patients with melanoma of the scalp were predominantly male. The 5-year survival rate was 89 percent. This compared favorably with similar patients with melanoma arising either in the trunk or the extremity. The prognosis of patients with stage I melanoma of the scalp is no worse than that of patients with melanoma arising in the trunk or extremity; therefore, they should be treated in a comparable manner.

Wide excision of periampullary carcinoma is associated with low operative morbidity and mortality, but its effect on long-term survival, compared with that of pancreaticoduodenal resection, is controversial. Five patients with periampullary carcinoma were treated with wide local excision as a definitive procedure. There was no operative death, and four patients survived for two or more years following the operation. These patients are presented and the literature is reviewed.

Twelve patients with oral carcinoma in situ were examined to clarify the clinical features and the most suitable therapy for this lesion. Seven cases were classified clinically as the erythroplakic type, two as the leukoplakic type, and three as the mixed type. The cumulative survival rate of ten cases, excluding two cases with lesions of the soft palate, was 100% in 10 years. Of 12 lesions of oral carcinoma in situ 50% progressed into invasive carcinoma. A case of malignant ACTH-producing hypophyseal tumor with serial CT scan and histological investigation is discussed. The neoplasm became evident with a Cushing's syndrome and was treated with adrenalectomy and radiotherapy. Nelson's syndrome subsequently developed due to histologically atypical adenoma. Subarachnoid metastases occurred after 4 years, finally causing a fatal intracranial hemorrhage.

The charts of 17 patients who received postauricular, suboccipital, and posterior triangle neck dissection for primary malignant melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma of the posterior half of the scalp (behind the coronal plane of the tragus) or nape of the neck were reviewed. The regional procedure was applied bilaterally in five of these patients in whom the primary lesion was on or close to the midline. The low recurrence rate in the neck, in the absence of moderate or severe funtional and cosmetic sequelae, makes this regional neck dissection a sound procedure for selected patients.

Using an enzyme-bridge immunoperoxidase method, pregnancy specific beta1-glycoprotein (PSbetaG) has been demonstrated in the cytoplasm of the trophoblast in several formalin-fixed tissues, namely, implantation sites of ovum, normal placentae, hydatidiform moles, invasive moles, and choriocarcinomata of uterus and testis. It is suggested that this technique may prove helpful in the detection of choriocarcinomatous elements in malignant tumours.

The prognostic significance of peritoneal cytology among 269 women with clinical stage I and II carcinoma of the endometrium was studied.
