Segmentation of HE-stained meningioma pathological images based on pseudo-labels.

Biomedical research is inseparable from the analysis of various histopathological images, and hematoxylin-eosin (HE)-stained images are one of the most basic and widely used types. However, at present, machine learning based approaches of the analysis of this kind of images are highly relied on manual labeling of images for training. Fully automated processing of HE-stained images remains a challenging task due to the high degree of color intensity, size and shape uncertainty of the stained cells. For this problem, we propose a fully automatic pixel-wise semantic segmentation method based on p

A low-cost, automated parasite diagnostic system via a portable, robotic microscope and deep learning.

Manual hand counting of parasites in fecal samples requires costly components and substantial expertise, limiting its use in resource-constrained settings and encouraging overuse of prophylactic medication. To address this issue, a cost-effective, automated parasite diagnostic system that does not require special sample preparation or a trained user was developed. It is composed of an inexpensive (~US$350), portable, robotic microscope that can scan over the size of an entire McMaster chamber (100 mm2 ) and capture high-resolution (~1 μm lateral resolution) bright field images without need for

Early prediction of cognitive deficits in very preterm infants using functional connectome data in an artificial neural network framework.

Investigation of the brain's functional connectome can improve our understanding of how an individual brain's organizational changes influence cognitive function and could result in improved individual risk stratification. Brain connectome studies in adults and older children have shown that abnormal network properties may be useful as discriminative features and have exploited machine learning models for early diagnosis in a variety of neurological conditions. However, analogous studies in neonates are rare and with limited significant findings. In this paper, we propose an artificial neural

Prediction of early metastatic disease in experimental breast cancer bone metastasis by combining PET/CT and MRI parameters to a Model-Averaged Neural Network.

Macrometastases in bone are preceded by bone marrow invasion of disseminated tumor cells. This study combined functional imaging parameters from FDG-PET/CT and MRI in a rat model of breast cancer bone metastases to a Model-averaged Neural Network (avNNet) for the detection of early metastatic disease and prediction of future macrometastases. Metastases were induced in 28 rats by injecting MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells into the right superficial epigastric artery, resulting in the growth of osseous metastases in the right hind leg of the animals. All animals received FDG-PET/CT and MRI at days

Machine learning for detecting moyamoya disease in plain skull radiography using a convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND: Recently, innovative attempts have been made to identify moyamoya disease (MMD) by focusing on the morphological differences in the head of MMD patients. Following the recent revolution in the development of deep learning (DL) algorithms, we designed this study to determine whether DL can distinguish MMD in plain skull radiograph images. METHODS: Three hundred forty-five skull images were collected as an MMD-labeled dataset from patients aged 18 to 50 years with definite MMD. As a control-labeled data set, 408 skull images of trauma patients were selected by age and sex matching.

Network-based association analysis to infer new disease-gene relationships using large-scale protein interactions.

Protein-protein interactions integrated with disease-gene associations represent important information for revealing protein functions under disease conditions to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complex diseases. Although several studies have attempted to identify disease-gene associations, the number of possible disease-gene associations is very small. High-throughput technologies have been established experimentally to identify the association between genes and diseases. However, these techniques are still quite expensive, time consuming, and even difficult to perform. Th

Computational model of soft tissues in the human upper airway.

This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element model of the tongue and surrounding soft tissues with potential application to the study of sleep apnoea and of linguistics and speech therapy. The anatomical data was obtained from the Visible Human Project, and the underlying histological data was also extracted and incorporated into the model. Hyperelastic constitutive models were used to describe the material behaviour, and material incompressibility was accounted for. An active Hill three-element muscle model was used to represent the muscular tissue of the tongue. The neural stimulus

Combustion monitoring of a water tube boiler using a discriminant radial basis network.

This research work includes a combination of Fisher's linear discriminant (FLD) analysis and a radial basis network (RBN) for monitoring the combustion conditions for a coal fired boiler so as to allow control of the air/fuel ratio. For this, two-dimensional flame images are required, which were captured with a CCD camera; the features of the images-average intensity, area, brightness and orientation etc of the flame-are extracted after preprocessing the images. The FLD is applied to reduce the n-dimensional feature size to a two-dimensional feature size for faster learning of the RBN. Also, t

Classification of schizophrenic patients and healthy controls using [18F] fluorodopa PET imaging.

Striatal dopaminergic overactivity has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia on the basis of in vivo neuroimaging studies. In particular, elevated striatal dopamine synthesis and storage has been repeatedly demonstrated in schizophrenia using the radiotracer 6-[18F] fluoro-l-DOPA ([18F] DOPA) and positron emission tomography (PET). Conventionally analysed [18F] DOPA PET imaging lacks the sensitivity or specificity to be used diagnostically. The aim of this study was to determine if the application of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) would improve classification of images, a

Prediction of specific pathogens in patients with sepsis: evaluation of TREAT, a computerized decision support system.

BACKGROUND: Prediction of bacterial infections and their pathogens allows for early, directed investigation and treatment. We assessed the ability of TREAT, a computerized decision support system, to predict specific pathogens. METHODS: TREAT uses data available within the first few hours of infection presentation in a causal probabilistic network to predict sites of infection and specific pathogens. We included 3529 patients (920 with microbiologically documented infections) participating in the observational and interventional trials of the TREAT system in Israel, Germany and Italy. Discrim

Site-specific updating and aggregation of Bayesian belief network models for multiple experts.

A method for combining multiple expert opinions that are encoded in a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) model is presented and applied to a problem involving the cleanup of hazardous chemicals at a site with contaminated groundwater. The method uses Bayes Rule to update each expert model with the observed evidence, then uses it again to compute posterior probability weights for each model. The weights reflect the consistency of each model with the observed evidence, allowing the aggregate model to be tailored to the particular conditions observed in the site-specific application of the risk model.

Use of an artificial neural network to differentiate between ECGs with IRBBB patterns of atrial septal defect and healthy subjects.

Atrial septal defect (ASD) is one of the most commonly recognized congenital cardiac anomalies in adults, but its diagnosis is easily missed because about half of the patients are asymptomatic early in life. Although an electrocardiogram (ECC) diagnosis with an incomplete right bundle branch block (IRBBB) pattern is of major importance for this disease, an RSR' complex similar to an IRBBB pattern is also found in some healthy individuals. A feed-forward artificial neural network was constructed to distinguish between ASD and healthy subjects using 12-lead ECGs with IRBBB. A total of 106 clinic

NeuroTrustNet: a cost-effective multimodal ensemble framework for brain tumor classification under cross-dataset variability.

Accurate brain tumor classification from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) remains challenging due to dataset heterogeneity, class imbalance, and limited interpretability, while practical deployment further requires models that balance predictive performance with computational efficiency. In this work, we propose NeuroTrustNet, an integrated multimodal framework that combines complementary convolutional neural network (CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and handcrafted radiomic representations through the proposed Adaptive Attention Stacking (AAS) mechanism, enabling sample-specific feature fusion

Image Processing and Deep Convolutional Neural Network Method for Automated Malaria Parasite Detection in Thin Blood Slide Images.

Background: Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium species, which is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In clinical settings, experienced parasitologists perform microscopic examinations of thick/thin blood slides. This method is labour-intensive and is adversely affected by inter- and intra-observer variability among the microscopists. The present study aimed to develop a malaria screening algorithm using computer vision to identify and classify malaria parasite-infected red blood cells (RBC) from microscopic blood slide images. Methods: The proposed cl

Artificial intelligence for abdominopelvic trauma imaging: trends, gaps, and future directions.

Abdominopelvic trauma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, typically resulting from high-energy mechanisms such as motor vehicle collisions and penetrating injuries. Admission abdominopelvic trauma CT, performed either selectively or as part of a whole-body CT protocol, has become the workhorse screening and surgical planning modality due to improvements in speed and image quality. Radiography remains an essential element of the secondary trauma survey, and Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) scanning has added value for quick assessment of non-compressible hemorrhage
