[Neurological disorders in preterm children with neuropathy].

AIM: To establish the correlation between the frequency and severity of hypoxic CNS lesions in preterm children with neuropathy and improve the early diagnosis of lesions of the brain structures based on clinical ophthalmologic results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors examined 712 premature infants with body mass <1500 g born before 30 weeks of gestation during 2006-2016. Ophthalmological monitoring of retinopathy (RP), an analysis of medical history, neurological examination and neurosonography were performed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: RP was found in 367 (51.5%) children. In 255 children,

Visual and ocular motor function in the atypical form of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation type I.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) type I is a rare disease that can be divided into a classical or atypical variant, according to age of onset and clinical pattern. Neuro-ophthalmological involvement has been documented in the classical variant but only anecdotically in the atypical variant. We sought to describe the visual and ocular motor function in patients with atypical form of NBIA type I. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, including patients with genetically confirmed NBIA type I and classified as atypical variant, who underwent ophthalmological examin

[Static Retinal Vessel Analysis in Population-based Study SHIP-Trend].

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary investigations of possible connections between general diseases and ophthalmological changes are difficult to perform in the clinical environment. But they are gaining in importance as a result of the age-related increase in chronic diseases. The collection of health-related parameters in the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) project allows to derive conclusions for the general population. METHODS: The population-based SHIP trend study was conducted between 2008 and 2012 in Greifswald. The baseline cohort included 4420 subjects (response 50.1%) at the age of 20

Characterization of diplopia in non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Although diplopia is considered a frequent symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), little is known about its clinical manifestation, associated mechanisms and treatment. Here we characterized binocular diplopia in non-demented PD patients in an interdisciplinary setting. METHODS: PD patients were prospectively screened for diplopia, visual hallucinations, problems with spatial perception, contrast sensitivity, presence of blurred vision, and history of ophthalmological comorbidities via interview. Two groups of PD patients, one with and one without diplopia, underwent clinical and

Unilateral Adie's Tonic Pupil and Viral Hepatitis - Report of Two Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Adie's (tonic) pupil is a neuro-ophthalmological disorder characterized by a tonically dilated pupil, which is unresponsive to light. It is caused by damage to postganglionic fibers of the parasympathetic innervation of the eye, usually by a viral.or bacterial infection. Adie's syndrome includes diminished deep tendon reflexes. OUTLINE OF CASES: We report data of a 59-year-old female with unequal pupil sizes. She complained of blurred vision and headache mainly while reading. She had a 35-year history of hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis. On exam, left pupil was mydriatic and ther

PURPOSE: To characterize the incidence, type, natural history, and treatment outcomes of strabismus in pediatric patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and optic pathway glioma (OPG). METHODS: The medical records of consecutive patients diagnosed with NF1 and OPG at our neurofibromatosis clinic since 1985 were reviewed retrospectively. We noted age at diagnosis, reason for referral to our clinic, ophthalmologic examination results, presence or absence of strabismus, strabismus type and treatment, and final results of treatment. Carotid cavernous sinus fistulas without superior ophthalmic vein enlargement.

PURPOSE: Diagnosis of carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) relies on clinical findings, such as proptosis, chemosis, and pulsatile tinnitus, plus imaging features including enlargement of the superior ophthalmic vein (SOV). This study reviewed patients with CCF, with a focus on those who were clinically symptomatic but had a normal-appearing SOV on routine scans. METHODS: Retrospective review was conducted on the clinical records of patients with CCF seen by ophthalmology or interventional neuroradiology, with attention to clinical and imaging features, angiography findings, management, and outcom…

Clinical study of 20 patients with incontinentia pigmenti.

BACKGROUND: Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare genodermatosis with early prenatal lethality in affected males. Clinical manifestations are usually more exuberant in sporadic than in familial cases. Cutaneous manifestations occur in all sporadic cases and about 96% of familial cases. As well as the skin, other tissues arising from the neuroectoderm may be affected. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to evaluate dermatologic, dental, neurologic, and ophthalmologic manifestations in patients with IP. METHODS: Findings in IP patients and family members also diagnosed with IP in Porto Alegre,

[Neuro-ophthalmic adverse effects of metronidazole treatment in children: Two case studies].

PURPOSE: To report the onset of neuro-ophthalmological adverse effects in two children treated with metronidazole for amoebic dysentery. OBSERVATIONS: A 6-year-old child and his 8-year-old sister presented with sudden bilateral vision loss and diplopia associated with intense headache and vomiting. The medical history revealed amoebic dysentery 3 weeks before treated orally with metronidazole for 2 weeks. The ophthalmic examination was similar in the two children and revealed visual acuity of 3/10 bilaterally, binocular diplopia, normal oculomotor function, quiet anterior segment, altered aff

OBJECTIVES: To determine the types and frequency of ophthalmic findings in pugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of case records of pugs presented to an ophthalmology unit between 2001 and 2012. Ophthalmological findings were correlated with age, gender, presenting signs and time of onset of disease. [Bilateral non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy during treatment of viral hepatitis C with pegylated interferon and Ribavirin].

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis C is a serious viral infection, for which the current treatment is based on the combination of pegylated interferon (IFN) and Ribavirin(®). Ophthalmic complications observed with PEG-IFN are infrequent and of variable prognosis. They often include an ischemic retinopathy with typical cotton-wool spots, hemorrhage and retinal edema, and rarely acute non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy as illustrated by our report. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 51-year-old man followed for chronic active hepatitis C, who presented in the fourth month of treatment with
