Evaluation of the miniplate-anchored Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device in skeletal Class II growing subjects: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the use of direct miniplate anchorage in conjunction with the Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device (FFRD) in treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight females with skeletal Class II were randomly allocated to the Forsus plus miniplates (FMP) group (16 patients, age 12.5 ± 0.9 years), Forsus alone (FFRD; 16 patients, age 12.1 ± 0.9 years), or the untreated control group (16 subjects, age 12.1 ± 0.9 years). After leveling and alignment, miniplates were inserted in the mandibular symphysis in the FMP group. The FFRD was inserted directly o

Guiding the Child's Teeth with Class III Dental Malocclusion into Correct Occlusion: A Clinician's Parenting.

Pediatric dentists are often the first ones to be consulted for the presence of an anterior cross bite in the primary dentition. The condition requires an early interception to avoid progressive dentoalveolar and skeletal changes. The management, however, poses unique challenges in terms of young age of the child, correct choice of appliance and unpredictability of the response to treatment due to inability to ascertain the inherent growth potential. It is very important therefore for the specialist, to be able to recognize the early signs of a developing class III malocclusion tendency and al

Mandibular lip bumper for molar torque control.

Treatment effects of lip bumpers alone include flaring of the mandibular incisors, distalization and uprighting of the mandibular first molars, and buccal expansion of the canines, premolars, and molar. Lip forces are transmitted through this appliance onto the molars. Moreover the lip bumper is able to derotate, expand or constrict, upright and reinforce the anchorage whereas torque control is lacking. Aim of this paper is the presentation of a new type of lip bumper that allows the molar torque control.

Effects of conventional anchorage on premolar root development during treatment with a pendulum appliance.

OBJECTIVE: By metrically analyzing orthopantomograms, we aimed in this study to retrospectively investigate whether maxillary premolars used as anchoring teeth during molar distalization with pendulum appliances would reveal inhibited root development. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The upper molars were distalized with a modified pendulum appliance (Pendulum K) in 36 adolescents (14 males, 22 females, mean age 12.3 years). Mean treatment period was 19.5 weeks. Orthopantomograms of each patient were taken at the start (time point T1) and after completion of molar distalization (time point T2). The enl

Management of over-retained mandibular deciduous second molars with and without permanent successors.

The objective of this article is to describe the various clinical situations of prolonged retention of mandibular deciduous second molars. Indications for orthodontic space closure in the absence of permanent successors and treatment alternatives in space opening, including retaining the deciduous molars, are described. Periodic monitoring, composite buildups, and indications and timing of extraction of infraoccluded and ankylosed deciduous molars with and without permanent successors are reviewed.

Functional appliance therapy to control drooling: a case of a child with mental retardation.

A 12 year old male child with mental retardation was referred to the department of Pedodontics and Preventive Children Dentistry, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, with a complaint of severe drooling. Mouth closure exercises and speech therapy had failed to control the problem. The patient was given a functional appliance and a significant reduction in the severity of the drooling and reduction in the foul odor was found. Despite its limitations functional appliance therapy could serve as a useful alternative to the use of drugs or surgery in the control of drooling.

Space closure in adult patients using the segmented arch technique.

Periodontally compromised adult patients may benefit from modified appliance designs for space closure. TMA T-loops of .016" x .022" and .017" x .025" cross sections, with angulations incorporated via concentrated bends and gradual curvature bends are presented. The force systems these appliances produce are measured, and their clinical performances discussed. Templates for these T-loops are presented. By producing lower forces and higher moment to force ratios, this type of T-loop may benefit patients with bony loss.

[Application for treatment of ectopic eruption].

Sometimes a maxillary permanent first molar, erupts mesially and causes both resorption on primary second molar and uncompletion its eruption. Consequently, this will end up early loss of primary second molar and loss of space in the arch length. It has been suggested several methods for ectopic eruption treatment. In this article, we would like to advocate an appliance which is simple, effective and easy to fabricate for early treatment of ectopic eruption.

En masse retraction of anterior teeth through rapid periodontal distraction by a retraction screw: A randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Rapid distraction of the periodontal ligament is an effective method to shorten the orthodontic treatment time. The objectives of the present study were to assess the effects of an HYCON device (Adenta GmbH, Germany) on the rate of en masse retraction of the anterior teeth, duration of retraction, anchorage loss, root resorption, and soft tissue changes. METHODS: This study was conducted on 60 female patients aged >18 years, divided randomly into two equal groups: Group 1 comprised 30 patients with HYCON, and group 2 comprised 30 patients with nickel-titanium closed coil springs.

Etiology, Classification and Management of Ectopic Eruption of Permanent First Molars.

Ectopic eruption of a permanent tooth involves abnormal resorption of a portion or all of the adjacent primary tooth. Among the most commonly ectopically erupted teeth are the permanent first molars. Ectopically erupting molars may require intervention to allow for full eruption, or they may spontaneously self-correct and erupt into occlusion. Decisions regarding the necessity of intervention, its ideal timing, and intervention type are multifactorial. Treatment options for the ectopically erupting permanent first molar include the elastomeric separator, brass wire, pre-fabricated clip separat

A simple way to intrude overerupted upper second molars with miniscrews.

Various methods of using skeletal anchorage for the intrusion of overerupted maxillary molars have been reported; however, it is difficult to intrude the overerupted upper second molars because of the low bone density in the region of the tuberosity. This article illustrates a new treatment method using partial fixed edgewise appliances and miniscrews to intrude the overerupted upper second molars. The miniscrews were applied to reinforce the anchorage of the upper first molar. The intrusive force was generated by the Ni-Ti wire. The clinical results showed a significant intrusion effect witho

Development and evaluation of a deep learning model for occlusion classification in intraoral photographs.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion affects oral health and aesthetics, traditionally classified using systems like Angle's, which depend on physical exams or casts. Digital dentistry has shifted towards intraoral photography for documentation and assessment, though interpretation requires clinical expertise. The application of artificial intelligence (AI), and specifically deep learning, in medical imaging has been successful but remains largely unexplored in occlusal classification from intraoral photos. This study introduces a deep learning model to automate the classification of occlusal types from i

Induction of osteopenia during experimental tooth movement in the rat: alveolar bone remodelling and the mechanostat theory.

Increases in bone strains above a certain threshold have a positive effect on bone mass, whereas reductions in strain magnitude lead to bone loss and osteopenia; the term 'mechanostat' has been introduced to describe this tissue-level negative feedback mechanism. The mechanobiology of bone and particularly alveolar bone is poorly understood, and whether the mechanostat theory has any relevance to explaining the osseous changes that occur during orthodontic tooth movement remains unclear. To investigate the relationship further, an expansile force of 0.2 N was applied to the maxillary molars of

Maxillonasal dysplasia (Binder's syndrome). A study of craniofacial morphology, associated malformations and familial relations.

The aims of the present thesis were to study the craniofacial morphology and growth pattern in individuals with maxillonasal dysplasia, to check the presence of associated malformations and to elucidate the etiological factors. The thesis was based on five investigations. A cross-sectional cephalometric study of the craniofacial morphology of 97 Binder-subjects was performed. Comparison of 36 variables measured was made between these subjects and a control material, consisting of children with orthognathic profile and normal occlusion, matched for sex and age. Highly significant differences we
