Cesarean Birth Regret and Dissatisfaction: A Qualitative Approach.

BACKGROUND: The most consistently noted difference between unplanned cesarean and vaginal births is patient dissatisfaction or regret. This has been explored in multiple quantitative studies. However, the causes of this dissatisfaction remain elusive as a result of the limitations of survey instruments that restrict possible choices. METHODS: Using open-ended, semi-structured interviews (n = 14), the purpose of this study was to identify potentially alterable factors that contribute to cesarean section regret when the surgery is performed during labor. In interviews that took place between 2

Agreement between triage category and patient's perception of priority in emergency departments.

BACKGROUND: Patients attending hospital emergency departments (ED) commonly cite the urgency and severity of their condition as the main reason for choosing the ED. However, the patients' perception of urgency and severity may be different to the nurses' perception of their urgency and severity, which is underpinned by their professional experience, knowledge, training and skills. This discordance may be a cause of patient dissatisfaction. The purpose of this study is to understand the extent of agreement/disagreement between the patient's perceived priority and actual triage category and asso

Long-term patient perception of pain control experience after participating in a trial between patient-controlled analgesia and epidural after pectus excavatum repair with bar placement.

BACKGROUND: Pain control is the dominant management issue after bar placement for pectus excavatum. We previously conducted a prospective, randomized trial comparing patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) to thoracic epidural (EPI) documenting similar objective outcomes. Our impression is that the subjective cognitive experience differs between the groups, which impacts trial results interpretation. Therefore, we conducted a survey to ascertain patient recollection and impression of their experience. METHODS: By telephone questionnaire, yes/no questions included early course recall, anxiety, if t

Colorectal cancer screening and surveillance: the present and the future.

Colorectal cancer screening is now proven to be effective and is widely endorsed by guidelines committees. Several forms of screening have merit, but the screening tests used in individual patients are often dictated by insurers. The use of screening colonoscopy is expected to increase. Gastroenterologists will play the central role in ensuring the safe and cost-effective application of colonoscopy to screening and surveillance.
