An evaluation of oral-fluid collection devices for the determination of rubella antibody status in a rural Ethiopian community.

We compared 3 different oral-fluid collection devices to assess their suitability for use in community studies of rubella antibody. Of 58 individuals enrolled from 13 households from a southern Ethiopian village, 38 provided a blood sample and oral fluids by the 3 devices: 2 proprietary, Omni-SAL and OraSure, and a third a polystyrene sponge swab (Sponge). The Sponge swab, used like a toothbrush, was most acceptable to survey staff and to participants of all ages, although it proved ill-adapted for fluid extraction. The other devices more often caused participant discomfort or anxiety, particu

A clinical and phenomenological study of 185 Spanish adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

The objectives of the present study were the following to determine the socio-familial, academic and interpersonal characteristics specific to anorexia nervosa (AN); to study comorbidity in patients with anorexia and morbidity in their parents; and to ascertain whether patients with anorexia nervosa in Spain are similar to those in other countries. The research team revised the clinical records of 185 Spanish adolescents with AN (aged 11-18 years). The results were compared with those obtained from a group of 185 psychiatric patients without AN matched by sex, age, time of consultation and cen

Caffeine and the central nervous system: mechanisms of action, biochemical, metabolic and psychostimulant effects.

Caffeine is the most widely consumed central-nervous-system stimulant. Three main mechanisms of action of caffeine on the central nervous system have been described. Mobilization of intracellular calcium and inhibition of specific phosphodiesterases only occur at high non-physiological concentrations of caffeine. The only likely mechanism of action of the methylxanthine is the antagonism at the level of adenosine receptors. Caffeine increases energy metabolism throughout the brain but decreases at the same time cerebral blood flow, inducing a relative brain hypoperfusion. Caffeine activates no

Psychological factors in cardiac arrhythmias.

Autonomic nervous control of the heart and the blood vessels is essential for optimal physical performance. Afferent nerves conduct impulses to the vasomotor and cardioaccelerator and cardioinhibitor centres resulting in efferent sympathetic and vagus output. Information inputs also from the environment and the person's thought processes are mediated from the cortex by the hypothalamus, the limbic system, and the autonomic nervous system to the heart and blood vessels. Emotional factors like anger, anxiety, and fear increase sympathetic output and influence heart rate. On the other hand, fear

Body Image, Disordered Eating, and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport Risk in Female Athletes: Associations Across Psychological and Behavioral Factors.

BACKGROUND: Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) is traditionally conceptualized as a physiological consequence of low energy availability, yet emerging evidence implicates psychological and behavioral mechanisms in its development. This study examined the associations among body image, disordered eating, social physique anxiety, and female health knowledge to clarify psychosocial antecedents of REDs risk in female athletes. HYPOTHESIS: Negative body image will be associated with REDs risk and disordered eating. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS

The dynamic evolution trajectory and predictive factors of the forgotten joint score after total knee arthroplasty: a prospective cohort study of 129 patients.

BACKGROUND: The Forgotten Joint Score (FJS) has emerged as a vital metric for assessing the outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, its post-TKA trajectory patterns and predictive factors remain controversial. This study aimed to elucidate the evolution trajectory of the FJS within the first year following TKA and identify its predictive factors. METHODS: This was an longitudinal, prospective, observational, single-center study. A total of 157 patients who underwent primary TKA from May 2023 to July 2023 were included. Preoperatively, patient demographics and comorbidities were col

Effect of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation with electrical stimulation on generalized anxiety disorder: Study protocol for an assessor-participant blinded, randomized sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common type of anxiety disorder and can cause severe damage to patients and increase medical and social burdens. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been used for treating mental disorders, but the involvement of surgery, perioperative risks, and potentially significant side effects have limited this treatment. Anatomical studies have shown that the ear is the only area where the afferent vagus nerve is distributed on the skin. Recently, the safety and efficacy of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (t-VNS) with electrical s

Combined Administration of Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium Offers Enhanced Antidepressant and Anxiolytic Activity in a Dose Dependent Manner.

PURPOSE: Gut microbiota is strongly linked to the activity of the bidirectional gut-brain axis, which influences neuropsychological processes at multiple levels. Changes in the gut microbiota have been implicated in mood disorders, and probiotics have been explored for their ability to mitigate the effects of stress on mental health. Here, we investigated the therapeutic benefits of different concentrations and combinations of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in a mouse model of stress induced depression and anxiety. METHODS: Sixty-three male ICR mice (6-8 weeks old; 20-25g) divided into nin

Tommy's National Rainbow Clinic Study: a protocol for a multi-site cohort study to evaluate a specialist antenatal service for women and families following a stillbirth or neonatal death.

INTRODUCTION: In the UK, each year, approximately 2250 babies are stillborn, and there are an additional 1150 neonatal deaths. The death of a baby before or shortly after birth is a profoundly distressing experience for women and their families and is invariably followed by a period of grief. Most women who have experienced the loss of a baby will embark on another pregnancy, usually within a year. Parents need specialist support from doctors and midwives in a future pregnancy to reduce the risk of pregnancy complications and meet care and support needs. The Rainbow Clinic aims to meet these n

Does incontinence in a child with bladder exstrophy negatively affect caregivers? A mental health inventory survey.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary continence is a goal of bladder exstrophy epispadias complex (BEEC) surgical management. However, it is often not achieved until school age or later. Little is known about the mental health implications of this incontinence on caregivers and whether this should affect timing of surgical interventions to achieve continence. We hypothesized that caregivers of children with continuous incontinence or dry intervals <1 h per day/night exhibit adverse mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between urinary incontinence of children with BEEC and caregive
