Electroencephalographic assessment of pneumatic penetrating captive-bolt stunning of donkeys (Equus asinus).

Equids slaughtered for human consumption in many countries are stunned with penetrating captive bolt (PCB) to produce an irreversible state of unconsciousness to prevent pain and distress before exsanguination. This topic is much-studied for the most commonly slaughtered species, while literature remains limited on Equidae, particularly donkeys (Equus asinus). This study, in a Mexican commercial abattoir, examined the effectiveness of pneumatic PCB stunning with electroencephalographic (EEG) and behavioural signs in 13 donkeys. Forty-six percent (6/13) of donkeys had periods of 'normal-like' E

Synergistic effects of erythropoietin and selenium enhance bone regeneration in ovariectomized rats.

Osteoporotic bone defects present formidable clinical challenges due to the limited capacity for natural bone repair. Erythropoietin (EPO) and Selenium (Se) have both demonstrated significant efficacy in enhancing bone regeneration; however, it remains unclear whether the combination of EPO and Se can further augment bone repair in the context of estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis. We undertook a study aimed at exploring the potential effects of localized implantation of materials incorporating EPO and/or Se on bone regeneration in rats subjected to osteoporosis via bilateral ovariectomy

Mogamulizumab plus etoposide in the management of mycosis fungoides with blood involvement: a case report.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome are primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas with widely varying courses of disease and prognosis. Here, we report the case of a patient with MF with blood involvement who experienced many lines of skin-directed and systemic therapies throughout their disease course. The male patient presented with scaly, itchy, and painful patches on his trunk and upper extremities in 2012 and was diagnosed with MF, which progressed to erythroderma with blood involvement. Various skin-directed therapies were prescribed; however, in 2014, progression of skin lesions ensued.

Reduced conjunctival goblet cells and altered tear film stability predispose atopic dermatitis patients to develop dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease and show a Th1/innate immune response in tear fluid.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is often associated with ocular surface disease (OSD). Dupilumab, an IL-4Rα inhibitor, is an effective treatment for AD but it sometimes induces dupilumab-associated OSD (DAOSD). DAOSD may associate with a paucity of conjunctival goblet cells or altered immune response; however, the mechanism remains undetermined. Therefore, we aimed to identify ophthalmological alterations and to explore the potential mechanisms of DAOSD in AD patients receiving dupilumab. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, single-arm, observational study with 50 moderate-to-severe AD pat

Platelet-rich plasma in the management of genital lichen sclerosus: A review of mechanisms, evidence, and future directions.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the anogenital region. Treatment with potent topical corticosteroids (TCS) can help control symptoms for many patients, but complications such as atrophy and scarring often persist. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a regenerative therapy with potential application in LS. We review the clinical evidence and highlight gaps and future research needs. We searched PubMed and Web of Science databases for studies of PRP in LS. The outcomes evaluated included symptom relief, quality of life (QoL)
