The effects of developmental quotient and diagnostic criteria on challenging behaviors in toddlers with developmental disabilities.

Previous research has found that individuals with intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and those with greater symptom severity within these diagnoses, show higher rates of aggressive/destructive behavior, stereotypic behavior, and self-injurious behavior. In this exploratory cross-sectional study, toddlers at-risk for a developmental disorder (n=1509) ranging from 17 to 36 months fell into one of three diagnostic categories: Autistic Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified [PDD-NOS], and atypically developing - no ASD diagnosis. Mental healt

[Clinical characteristics of tinnitus in Ménière's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Ménière's disease is characterised by vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus. Various studies assess the problem of vertigo and audition deficit in Ménière's disease, but only a few of these relate to the clinical characteristics of tinnitus, the aim of this study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A transversal descriptive study of the behaviour of tinnitus in 88 patients in different stages of Ménière's disease treated in a tertiary hospital was carried out. The different characteristics of disease were analysed: intensity was evaluated with an analogue-visual scale, subjective tonality throu

Development of the Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale: concurrent validity, discriminant validity and retest reliability.

Scales used in studies of bipolar disorder have generally been standardized with major depressive or hospitalized manic patients. A clinician rated scale based on a semi-structured interview for persons with bipolar disorder, with comprehensive coverage of bipolar symptomatology, is needed. We report concurrent, divergent and convergent psychometric reliability, discriminant validity and relationship to a measure of overall function for a new psychometric rating instrument. A primarily outpatient sample of 224 subjects was assessed using the Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale (BISS). The BISS

Neuroanatomical correlates of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease research has largely concentrated on the study of cognitive decline, but the associated behavioural and neuropsychiatric symptoms are of equal importance in the clinical profile of the disease. There is emerging evidence that regional differences in brain atrophy may align with variant disease presentations. The objective of this study was to identify the regions of decreased grey matter (GM) volume which were associated with specific neuropsychiatric behaviours in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease. Voxel-based morphometry was used to correlate GM derived from T(1)-wei

Childhood adversity and psychosocial adjustment in old age.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that higher level of childhood adversity is associated with lower level of psychosocial adjustment in old age. METHOD: Participants are 253 older persons (mean age: 79.8, standard deviation: 2.1; 73.9% women) from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a clinicopathologic study of common chronic conditions of old age. Childhood adversity was assessed with a 16-item measure based on portions of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and other inventories. Psychosocial adjustment was assessed with multiple measures of neuroticism (i.e.,

Health beliefs and parenting attitudes influence breastfeeding patterns among low-income African-American women.

OBJECTIVE: To describe breastfeeding initiation among 210 urban African-American mothers with inadequate prenatal care. METHODS: This study is a case-control study of postpartum mothers recruited from four large urban hospitals. RESULTS: Mothers who chose to breastfeed were more educated, employed before birth, married, and using contraception postnatally. Regression model analysis controlling for demographic differences revealed that breastfeeding was significantly associated with a higher perception of severity of illness and higher confidence in the ability of health care to prevent illne

Teacher Well-Being and Burnout Resilience: Dimensional Independence, Pandemic Burden, and Profile Analysis in Primary Education.

BACKGROUND: Primary school teachers are experiencing unprecedented occupational stress due to technological demands, varied student needs, and the enduring psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although burnout research is extensive globally, evidence regarding Greek primary educators remains scarce, particularly in post-pandemic contexts where Mediterranean cultural values, economic constraints, and centralized governance may yield unique patterns. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined professional burnout among 102 primary school teachers in Achaia prefecture, Greece, durin

Occupational Burnout in Nurses Is due to Long-Term Work Stress Rather Than COVID-19 Pandemic Event.

AIM: This study aims to explore occupational burnout among Chinese nurses from two perspectives: first, by comparing changes in emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment before and after the COVID-19 pandemic; and second, by identifying long-term work-related stressors and structural factors contributing to burnout. DESIGN: A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining a systematic review with qualitative interviews. The qualitative component involved semi-structured interviews with 53 hospital-employed nurses from various departments and regions across China, focu

Prevalence of depression and associated risk factors among persons with type-2 diabetes mellitus without a prior psychiatric history: a cross-sectional study in clinical settings in urban Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a growing health problem in South Asia. Despite an increasing number of studies exploring causal pathways between diabetes and depression in high-income countries (HIC), the pathway between the two disorders has received limited attention in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). The aim of this study is to investigate the potential pathway of diabetes contributing to depression, to assess the prevalence of depression, and to evaluate the association of depression severity with diabetes severity. This study uses a clinical sample of persons living with diabetes sequela

Metacognitive beliefs in epilepsy: What is their contribution to quality of life in the context of anxiety, depression and cognitive functioning?

BACKGROUND: Beliefs about one's own thinking process - metacognition - are thought to influence a person's susceptibility to anxiety and depression. We aimed to explore the association between metacognitive beliefs, psychological symptomatology, objective cognitive functioning and quality of life (QoL) among people with epilepsy. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study including adults with epilepsy who attended an outpatient clinic. Participants provided sociodemographic data, information about their seizures and were then asked to complete the metacognitions questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30),

Motivation to change and perceptions of the admission process with respect to outcome in adolescent anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: In patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), there is evidence that readiness to change is an important predictor of outcome with respect to weight gain and improvement in eating disorder psychopathology. In particular, young patients are characterized by a low level of motivation for recovery and perceive more coercion at hospitalization. Thus, a better understanding of the variables that influence readiness to change and perception of the admission process in adolescent AN may help to support patients in initiating change and staying motivated for treatment. METHODS: In 40 adolescent

A biopsychosocial model of body image concerns and disordered eating in early adolescent girls.

Body image and eating concerns are prevalent among early adolescent girls, and associated with biological, psychological and sociocultural risk factors. To date, explorations of biopsychosocial models of body image concerns and disordered eating in early adolescent girls are lacking. A sample of 488 early adolescent girls, mean age = 12.35 years (SD = 0.53), completed a questionnaire assessing depressive symptoms, self-esteem, body mass index (BMI), sociocultural appearance pressures, thin-ideal internalization, appearance comparison, body image concerns and disordered eating.
