In 1993, an outbreak of 10 cases of Bartonella quintana bacteremia occurred among homeless, alcoholic, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative persons in Seattle. To estimate the prevalence of past exposure B. quintana among this population, a serosurvey was conducted in 1994 among patients at a downtown Seattle clinic. For the objective and valid identification of different human regulatory phenotypes it should be useful to analyze the behavior of different regulatory subsystems (Anochin 1976) in one multivariate design. Therefore in a DARA supported project a fully computerized and reliable laboratory assessment was developed and tested. Despite the propagation of imaging techniques in recent years, brain neoplasms are still identified too late in many cases, not least because of a disregard or misinterpretation of early psychiatric symptoms. By means of a detailed report of a case of olfactorius meningioma, together with a summary of 13 other cases from the same hospital over the past 15 years, it is demonstrated that a specious psychodynamic "understanding" may delay the correct diagnosis. Possible reasons for the initial false diagnosis are considered in detail.

Dissociation between personal and extrapersonal neglect has rarely been observed in man. In this study we present a case of severe personal neglect in the absence of a deficit for extrapersonal space. Alprazolam is a widely used antianxiety agent, yet relatively little is known about the relationship between chronic oral doses and steady-state plasma levels. This study examines the relationship over a wide range of therapeutic doses. We conducted a parallel, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 36 patients with agoraphobia with panic attacks, or panic disorder with limited phobic avoidance based on DSM-III criteria. During assessment of a girl with a long-standing phobic state, it was found that she also had previously unrecognised perceptuo-motor problems, which were associated with continuing problems in balance and spatial awareness. Her phobia improved after a desensitisation programme, but the physical disorder persisted, despite physiotherapy.
