Living beyond cancer in childhood and adolescence: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence on the lived experiences of childhood and adolescent cancer survivors (CACSs), focusing on both challenges and positive transformations after treatment. METHODS: A qualitative meta-synthesis was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Nineteen qualitative studies published between 2015 and 2025 were critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. Data were analyzed through thematic and content analysis to generate descriptive and analytical themes. RESULTS: Five overarching themes and 21 sub-themes were identified.

A new cross-disciplinary model for early integration of palliative care for patients with incurable cancer - an intervention development study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with incurable cancer face complex physical, psychological, social, and existential challenges. Early integration of palliative care (PC) has proven essential to improve quality of life and well-being, yet implementation remains inconsistent and often delayed. To address this gap, we developed the Cross-PALL model, a cross-disciplinary approach to integrate PC across oncology and primary care. METHODS: Following the Medical Research Council’s framework for complex interventions, we used a participatory design approach to develop the model in collaboration with key stakehol

Deviation From Optimal Physical Activity Duration Worsens Depressive Symptoms Through High Sleep Reactivity and Poor Sleep Quality in Adult Volunteers From the Community.

Physical inactivity is considered to increase depressive symptoms. There are also studies reporting that overly strenuous physical activity can negatively affect a person's mental state. Insomnia, which is associated with lower levels of physical activity and increased sleep reactivity, is also known to be associated with depression. However, the directionalities of the associations among these factors remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether both insufficient and excessive physical activity affect depressive symptoms through sleep reactivity and sleep quality. Between

Role of exercise physiologists in mental health support and recovery: 2026 Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Consensus Statement.

Exercise physiologists (EPs) are increasingly recognised for their role in supporting people with lived experience of mental health challenges through structured, evidence-based exercise interventions. Despite strong evidence for their impact on health outcomes, routine integration of EPs into mental health systems remains limited. This Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA)-endorsed Consensus Statement aims to define the scope, best-practice principles and integration strategies for EPs working across diverse mental health settings. Methods for development of this Consensus Statement in

SPEAK-SAFE: secure processing of electronic audio for knowledge in suicide assessment from therapeutic exchanges.

BACKGROUND: For therapists, the spoken word of their patients is among the most important foundations for clinical assessment. At the same time, it is hardly possible to monitor patients continuously and closely in sufficient numbers, for example, to ongoingly assess the risk of suicide in therapeutical conversations. Natural Language Processing (NLP) involves the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyze human language. Combining it with AI speech processing methods, we obtain multimodal methods which can automatically process large volumes of speech and language data to extract diagnost

Adapting and Co-Producing a Psychological First Aid Intervention for Care Home Staff: A Person-Based Approach to Enhance Workforce Resilience.

Care home staff are routinely exposed to stressful and traumatic events, increasing risks of psychological distress, burnout, and reduced workforce resilience. Psychological First Aid (PFA), recommended by the World Health Organization, provides an evidence-based framework for delivering immediate emotional and practical support; however, its adaptation for care home contexts is limited. This study aimed to co-produce and adapt an existing PFA training resource for care home staff using a person-based approach (PBA) to enhance contextual relevance, acceptability, and feasibility. Stigma toward individuals with cannabis use disorder across age groups: associations with familiarity and sociodemographic characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Stigma experienced by individuals with cannabis use disorder (CUD) has been identified as a significant impediment to their engagement with treatment programs. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of sociodemographic factors and familiarity with cannabis on stigmatizing attributions towards adolescent and adult case vignettes of people affected by CUD. METHOD: A quota sampling web survey in Germany conducted by a professional survey institute including two case vignettes of people with a CUD, applying a 2 × 2 × 2 (age of vignette* age of participant*familiarity wit

From Shame to Strength: How Mentors Can Help Mentees Navigate Shame.

Medical education's pursuit of excellence often inadvertently fosters a "hidden curriculum" of perfectionism and shame. This culture can transform adaptive striving into maladaptive perfectionism, where a fear of failure leads learners to view mistakes not as growth opportunities but as evidence of moral failings and personal inadequacy. When errors inevitably occur, the potential result is shame or an identity-focused belief that "I am bad." The resulting isolation and self-doubt potentially can lead to imposter syndrome, burnout, and depression. This paper explores the critical role of shame

Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) and Cardiovascular Dysfunction - Unraveling the Link: A Narrative Review.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) represents a major cause of mortality in individuals with epilepsy, accounting for 8-17% of epilepsy-related deaths. Its multifactorial pathogenesis implicates autonomic dysfunction, impaired heart rate variability, seizure-related arrhythmias, genetic channelopathies, and the potential influence of antiepileptic drugs. Epidemiological studies demonstrate increased SUDEP risk in patients with refractory epilepsy, poor seizure control, and polytherapy, with additional contributions from genetic predisposition and sleep-related seizures. Cardiac abnorm

Barriers and facilitators to exercise engagement during lung cancer treatment: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that exercising through lung cancer (LC) treatment may improve outcomes by modulating the tumor microenvironment and reducing hypoxia. However, recruitment and adherence challenges persist, limiting research progress and real-world implementation. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to explore the barriers and facilitators that influence exercise participation among individuals with LC during cancer treatment. METHODS: This ScR followed the JBI ScR methodology and the PRISMA-ScR checklist, using the participants-concept-context framework to define inclusion and exc

Integrated multi-omics, machine learning, network toxicology, and molecular docking reveal potential mechanisms underlying methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate-associated breast cancer.

Breast cancer (BC) represents a major public-health burden, and epidemiological evidence suggests a potential association with exposure to methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (MEP), a widely-used cosmetic preservative and estrogen-mimicking endocrine-disrupting chemical. Nevertheless, the potential mechanisms underlying MEP-associated BC oncogenesis and progression remain poorly understood. BC-related targets were curated from CTD, GeneCards, and OMIM, whereas MEP-related targets were interrogated from ChEMBL, PharmMapper, and SEA using stringent filters. The intersecting targets informed subsequent prot

Factors Associated With Testicular Cancer Risk Among New American Military Recruits During Wartime.

Testicular cancer (TCa) comprises the majority of peri/postpubertal male neoplasms and has increased in incidence. A review of the literature finds little information on short-term risks associated with mens' occupational choices. The U.S. Army includes a large population in the age range of highest TCa risk. We examined whether combat duty and occupational categories were associated with TCa in this population during a recent period of prevalent combat operations. We employed official medical, administrative and sociodemographic data on 210,483 males new to active-duty service in the U.S. Arm

Prevalence and factors associated with comorbidities in Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes: A national study.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is often accompanied by comorbidities such as hypertension (HTN), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and chronic kidney disease (CKD), which increase the disease burden and complicate its management. In Iran, where diabetes prevalence is growing, understanding the extent and determinants of these comorbidities is crucial for improving clinical care and informing national public health strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the WHO STEPwise approach to non-communicable diseases risk factor surveillance (STEPS) 2021 to assess the prevalence of comor
