Agreement between self and psychiatrist reporting of suicidal ideation at a Veterans Administration psychiatric emergency clinic.

BACKGROUND: With suicide rising in the United States, identifying and preventing suicides is increasingly important. To provide a valuable step toward achieving effective suicide risk assessment, this study examines the agreement between self-report measures and psychiatrist documentation of suicidal ideation and behaviors (SI) at a Veterans Administration (VA) psychiatric emergency clinic. METHODS: A total of 377 veterans presenting at a VA psychiatric emergency clinic completed a self-report survey on SI and other acute risk factors for suicidal behavior. We examined agreement between veter

Childhood maltreatment and violence: mediation through psychiatric morbidity.

Childhood maltreatment is associated with multiple adverse outcomes in adulthood including poor mental health and violence. We investigated direct and indirect pathways from childhood maltreatment to adult violence perpetration and the explanatory role of psychiatric morbidity. Analyses were based on a population survey of 2,928 young men 21-34 years in Great Britain in 2011, with boost surveys of black and minority ethnic groups and lower social grades. Respondents completed questionnaires measuring psychiatric diagnoses using standardized screening instruments, including antisocial personali

Delayed cognitive and psychiatric symptoms following methyl iodide and manganese poisoning: Potential for misdiagnosis.

This paper describes two patients who were exposed to toxic substances in the workplace, but for whom diagnosis proved difficult, particularly in case 2. Case 1 was exposed to methyl iodide and case 2 to manganese. Poisoning was characterised by delayed onset of symptoms following exposure and symptom progression after cessation of exposure. The clinical consequences of exposure to these substances include cerebellar and Parkinsonian symptoms followed by the development of cognitive impairment and the late appearance of psychiatric disturbances. Both cases were evaluated by physicians with lit

[Job integration as a goal of psychiatric therapy].

The social implications and long term consequences of mental disorders regarding sick days at work, unemployment rates and early retirement are considerable. Outcome in psychiatric treatment should be measured not only by reduction of psychopathological symptoms and improvement of subjective well-being respectively quality of life but also by taking social integration into account. Job inclusion could become a crucial factor indicating successful therapy. It is remarkable that there has been so little focus on the links between reduction of psychopathological symptoms and competitive working s

Low body weight and weight loss in the aged.

Low body weight and rapid unintentional weight loss are highly predictive of mortality and morbidity in the elderly population. Weight loss is frequently reported in elderly patients. Acute and chronic diseases are leading causes of involuntary weight loss. Whereas physical disease probably accounts for a majority of cases of involuntary weight loss, psychiatric disorders such as dementia and depression also may result in severe nutritional deficiencies. Additional physiological, psychological, and social factors may affect food intake and body weight. Changes in body composition include loss

Acidic cannabinoids in brain disorders: Neurobiological mechanisms, preclinical evidence, and translational challenges.

Acidic cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), and related biosynthetic precursors, represent the predominant phytocannabinoid forms naturally produced by Cannabis sativa. Long considered pharmacologically inactive intermediates, these compounds are now increasingly recognized as bioactive molecules with potential therapeutic relevance for brain disorders. Compared with their decarboxylated counterparts, acidic cannabinoids exhibit distinct physicochemical, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic properties that may confer

Social media addiction and borderline personality disorder: a survey study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious and difficult to treat psychiatric condition characterized by affective and interpersonal instability, impulsivity, and self-image disturbances. Although the relationship between BPD and substance use disorders has been well-established, there has been considerably less research regarding behavioral addictions in this population. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of social media addiction (SMA) among individuals with BPD and to explore whether it is related to aspects of disorder symptomology. METHO

An In Vivo Examination of the Relationship Between Metabotropic Glutamate 5 Receptor and Suicide Attempts in People With Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious psychiatric condition that is associated with a high risk for suicide attempts (SAs) and death by suicide. However, relatively little is known about the pathophysiology of BPD. The metabotropic glutamate 5 receptor (mGlu5) has been specifically implicated in the pathophysiology of BPD and SAs, with more general roles in emotion regulation, social and cognitive functioning, and pain processing. Here, we examined the relationship between mGlu5 availability, BPD, and SAs in vivo for the first time. METHODS: Eighteen individuals with

Clinical characteristics and prescriptions associated with a 2-year course of rapid cycling and euthymia in bipolar disorder: a multicenter treatment survey for bipolar disorder in psychiatric clinics.

OBJECTIVE: In patients with bipolar disorder (BD), rapid cycling (RC) presents a risk for a more severe illness, while euthymia (EUT) has a better prognosis. This study focused on the progression of RC and EUT, which are contrasting phenomenology, and aimed to clarify the influence of patient backgrounds and prescription patterns on these different progressions, using a large sample from the first and second iterations of a multicenter treatment survey for BD in psychiatric clinics (MUSUBI). METHODS: In the cross-sectional study (MUSUBI), a questionnaire based on a retrospective medical recor

Prevalence and correlates of HIV testing and HIV-positive status in the US: Results from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (NESARC-III).

We used the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (NESARC-III), a nationally representative sample of US adults (n = 34,653), to estimate the prevalence and correlates of HIV testing and HIV status. The diagnostic interview used was the Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule-DSM-5 Version. We found that in 2012-2013, the prevalence of a history of HIV testing was 53.0% among females and 47.0% among males. Among individuals tested, the prevalence of HIV was 1.06%, resulting in a known estimated prevalence of 0.54% in the full

Thalamocortical abnormalities in auditory brainstem response patterns distinguish DSM-IV bipolar disorder type I from schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder type I (BP-I) belongs to a spectrum of affective disorders that are expressed in many different ways and therefore can be difficult to distinguish from other conditions, especially unipolar depression, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia (SZ), but also anxiety and personality disorders. Since early diagnosis and treatment have shown to improve the long-term prognosis, complementary specific biomarkers are of great value. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) has previously been applied successfully to identify specific abnormal ABR patterns in SZ and Asperger s

[Sleep electroencephalography in depression and mental disorders with depressive comorbidity].

Traditional scoring of sleep EEG in depressed patients shows abnormalities in sleep maintenance, sleep architecture, REM sleep, the distribution of slow wave and REM sleep during the night. Computerized analysis that comprises the period-amplitude analysis procedure and spectral analysis discloses changes in delta activity and distribution of delta activity. However, these methods of analysing EEG sleep are not able to distinguish the various concepts of depression: endogenous and non-endogenous depression, unipolar and bipolar depression, psychotic and non-psychotic depression.
