Heterogeneous structure in face-selective human occipito-temporal cortex.

It is well established that the human visual system contains a distributed network of regions that are involved in processing faces, but our understanding of how faces are represented within these face-sensitive brain areas is incomplete. We used fMRI to investigate whether face-sensitive brain areas are solely tuned for whole faces, or whether they contain heterogeneous populations of neurons tuned to individual components of the face as well as whole faces, as suggested by physiological investigations in nonhuman primates. The middle fusiform gyrus (fusiform face area, or FFA) and the inferi

The neural basis of lip-reading capabilities is altered by early visual deprivation.

The present study investigated the neural basis of lip-reading in patients treated for congenital bilateral cataracts using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). These patients represent a model to study the role of visual experience in early infancy for the development of visual functions. Short video clips with an adult speaker's lips mouthing different words were presented. The participants were asked to indicate whether the current word was the same as the previous one (one-back matching task). A control condition consisted of the same stimuli but with the task to judge whether the

Temporal lobe functional activity and connectivity in young adult APOE varepsilon4 carriers.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine if the APOE epsilon4 allele influences both the functional activation and connectivity of the medial temporal lobes (MTLs) during successful memory encoding in young adults. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy young adults, i.e., 12 carriers and 12 noncarriers of the APOE epsilon4 allele, were scanned in a subsequent-memory paradigm, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging. The neuroanatomic correlates of successful encoding were measured as greater neural activity for subsequently remembered versus forgotten task items, or in short, encoding succ

FDG-PET mapping the brain substrates of visuo-constructive processing in Alzheimer's disease.

The anatomical basis of visuo-constructive impairment in AD is widely unexplored. FDG-PET can be used to determine functional neuronal networks underlying specific cognitive performance in the human brain. In the present study, we determined the pattern of cortical metabolism that was associated with visuo-constructive performance in AD. We employed two widely used visuo-constructive tests that differ in their demand on visual perception and processing capacity. Resting state FDG-PET scans were obtained in 29 probable AD patients, and cognitive tests were administered. We made a voxel-based re

Stereoacuity testing discloses abnormalities in multiple sclerosis without optic neuritis.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the value of stereoacuity testing in detecting subclinical disease activity in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) without a history or clinical evidence of optic neuritis. METHODS: We enrolled 23 patients with MS and 23 age-matched and sex-matched healthy control subjects with Snellen acuities of 20/20 in both eyes. We recorded monocular pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) to 60-minute and 15-minute check sizes and tested stereoacuity by the Randot stereoacuity (RSA) test. RESULTS: The MS group showed delayed PVEP latencies to 60-minute and 15-minute

Operant sensation seeking engages similar neural substrates to operant drug seeking in C57 mice.

Novelty and sensation seeking have been associated with elevated drug intake in human and animal studies, suggesting overlap in the circuitry mediating these behaviors. In this study, we found that C57Bl/6J mice readily acquired operant responding for dynamic visual stimuli, a phenomenon we term operant sensation seeking (OSS). Like operant studies using other reinforcers, mice responded on fixed and progressive ratio schedules, were resistant to extinction, and had sustained responding with extended access. We also found that OSS, like psychostimulant self-administration, is sensitive to disr

Neural activity within area V1 reflects unconscious visual performance in a case of blindsight.

Although lesions of the striate (V1) cortex disrupt conscious vision, patients can demonstrate surprising residual abilities within their affected visual field, a phenomenon termed blindsight. The relative contribution of spared "islands" of functioning striate cortex to residual vision, versus subcortical pathways to extrastriate areas, has implications for the role of early visual areas in visual awareness and performance. Here we describe the behavioral and neural features of residual cortical function in Patient M.C., who sustained a posterior cerebral artery stroke at the age of 15 years.

Inhibitory and facilitatory location priming in patients with left-sided visual hemi-neglect.

In visual search for pop-out targets, reaction times are facilitated when the target on the current trial appears at a previous target location, and inhibited when it appears at a previous distractor location, relative to when it appears at a previously empty (neutral) location (Maljkovic and Nakayama, Perception and Psychophysics 58:977-991, 1996). However, while normal subjects are able to positively/negatively tag selected target/rejected distractor locations to guide search on the next trial, patients with visual hemi-neglect may have a (uni- or bilateral) deficit in these functions that m

Effects of trauma-related audiovisual stimulation on cerebrospinal fluid norepinephrine and corticotropin-releasing hormone concentrations in post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although elevated concentrations of both corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and norepinephrine are present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the effects of exposure to traumatic stimuli on these stress-related hormones in CSF are unknown. METHODS: A randomized, within-subject, controlled, cross-over design was used, in which patients with war-related PTSD underwent 6-h continuous lumbar CSF withdrawal on two occasions per patient (6-9 weeks apart). During one session the patients watched a 1-h film containing combat footage

Illumination controls differentiation of dopamine neurons regulating behaviour.

Specification of the appropriate neurotransmitter is a crucial step in neuronal differentiation because it enables signalling among populations of neurons. Experimental manipulations demonstrate that both autonomous and activity-dependent genetic programs contribute to this process during development, but whether natural environmental stimuli specify transmitter expression in a neuronal population is unknown. We investigated neurons of the ventral suprachiasmatic nucleus that regulate neuroendocrine pituitary function in response to light in teleosts, amphibia and primates. Here we show that a

CBF/CMRO2 coupling measured with calibrated BOLD fMRI: sources of bias.

The coupling between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) during brain activation can be characterized by an empirical index n, the ratio of fractional CBF changes to fractional CMRO2 changes. Measurements of n have yielded varying results, and it is not known if the observed variability is due to measurement techniques or underlying physiology. The calibrated BOLD approach using hypercapnia offers a promising tool for assessing changes in CBF/CMRO2 coupling in health and disease, but potential systematic errors have not yet been characterized. The goal of th

Impaired visuospatial divided attention in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.

The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is a potential rodent model for the impulsive, inattentive and hyperactive aspects of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Impaired response inhibition and deficits of visual attention are demonstrable phenotypes of SHR (compared with normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats), and alterations of catecholaminergic transmission in the prefrontal cortex are thought to contribute to aspects of the phenotypic differences. Here, we investigated the attentional performance of SHR and WKY, using a lateralized reaction time task, a behavioral measure of visuospatial

Univerricht-Lundborg disease: underdiagnosed in the Netherlands.

PURPOSE: Univerricht-Lundborg disease (ULD), with its major symptom of action myoclonus, is supposed to be very rare in the Netherlands and western Europe. We hypothesized that the syndrome may be underdiagnosed in patients with myoclonus epilepsy. METHODS: Mutation analysis of the cystatin B gene was performed in 21 cases with uncontrolled myoclonus. RESULTS: Seven of the 21 evaluated cases carried mutations in the cystatin B gene. Diagnosis of ULD was made with a mean delay of 20 years from symptom onset. CONCLUSIONS: This study from a country without previous reports of ULD suggests that

Aerodynamics, voice quality, and laryngeal image analysis of normal and pathologic voices.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to describe examinations of phonatory function and their relation to image analysis of the unilaterally immobile larynx. Special emphasis was placed on image analysis using three-dimensional endoscopic images produced from CT scans. RECENT FINDINGS: Developments in modern image processing technique have led to the quantification of various aspects of vocal fold vibration. Stroboscopic images of the vocal fold were digitized and, subsequently, the glottal gap area, amplitude, and degree of bowing were analyzed quantitatively in relation to phona

Timing of tactile and visuo-tactile events is impaired in patients with cervical dystonia.

Psychophysical studies show alterations of cross-modal integration and timing processes in patients with generalized and focal hand dystonia. Here we assess the capability of 10 cervical dystonia patients, 5 patients with cervical pain but no dystonia, and 10 healthy controls to determine whether pairs of visual, tactile or visuo-tactile stimuli were simultaneous or sequential (TD threshold) and which stimulus preceded the other (temporal order judgement, TOJ). Visual stimuli consisted of light emitting diodes and tactile stimuli of non-noxious electrical shocks delivered to the hands. Interva

Visual areas in macaque cortex measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging.

We describe the first systematic functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements of visual field maps in macaque visual cortex. The boundaries of visual areas V1, V2, V3, V3A, V4, MT/V5, and TEO/V4A were identified using stimuli that create traveling waves of activity in retinotopically organized areas of the visual cortex. Furthermore, these stimuli were used to measure the dimensions of the representations of the central 11 degrees in V1-V3, quantitative visual field eccentricity functions for V1-V3 and MT, and the distribution of foveal and peripheral signals within the occipital

Benzodiazepines have no effect on fear-potentiated startle in humans.

RATIONALE: Pre-clinical and clinical investigations have provided a great deal of evidence that the fear-potentiated startle paradigm represents a valid model for the objective assessment of emotional states of anxiety and fear. OBJECTIVE: The four studies presented in this report sought to further validate the "threat of shock" paradigm as a human analogue to fear-potentiated startle in rats, by examining the effect of benzodiazepine administration on both baseline and fear-potentiated startle. METHODS: Three studies, conducted at Utrecht University, evaluated the effects of oxazepam and of

Shifting visual attention in space: an electrophysiological analysis using high spatial resolution mapping.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence from cortical electrophysiology and functional imaging converges on the view that visual spatial selective attention results in a facilitation of early sensory processing in visual cortical structures. Little is known, however, about the neural control processes that lead to this facilitation. The present study was aimed at further investigating these control processes and their neural correlates by analyzing high spatial resolution maps of brain activity that were evoked by attention-directing cues, but occurred prior to presentation of the target stimulus. METHODS: Subj
