BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation is an established complication of acute hemolytic transfusion reactions, particularly those involving the ABO red cell (RBC) antigen system. Chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis (CIMF) is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder (CMPD) with progressive fibrosis and extramedullary hematopoiesis. Similar to other CMPDs, the stem cell in CIMF has the potential to differentiate into myeloid or lymphoid lineages, and thus CIMF can culminate in acute leukemia of myeloid or, rarely, lymphoid lineage. CONTEXT: Although the loss of B-lineage-specific gene expression is a distinctive feature of plasmablastic lymphoma, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. A candidate for this mechanism is Notch1 signaling, which interferes with the activity of B-cell-specific transcription factors E2A and early B-cell factor and positively regulates the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway.

We examined the HIV-inhibitory effects previously found to be associated with scrub typhus infection. Individual 500 ml units of plasma from donors with mild scrub typhus were safety-tested, subjected to virucidal heat treatment, and administered to 10 HIV-1-infected recipients who were not receiving antiretroviral drugs.
