Glassy dynamics in two-dimensional ring polymers: size versus stiffness polydispersity.

Soft glassy materials often consist of deformable objects. Here, we use a two-dimensional assembly of semi-flexible ring polymers as a model system to investigate how polydispersity in particle stiffness or size influences the onset of glassy dynamics. In simulations at fixed polydispersity (30%), we find that stiffness dispersity drives most rings into elongated conformations at high densities, leading to orientationally ordered structures that cause dynamical slowing down. In contrast, size dispersity generates a bimodal population: small rings remain circular and act as rigid inclusions, wh

Feline Calicivirus Infection: Current Understanding and Implications for Control Strategies.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a highly contagious pathogen widely circulating in cat populations. FCV has been shown to be able to evade the host immune response through different mechanisms. As a result, following the acute phase of infection, some cats remain persistently infected or experience reinfection cycles with variants of the same strain or with distinct field FCVs. These animals may become asymptomatic carriers, assuming a critical role in virus transmission and posing a significant risk to susceptible cats, particularly in high-density settings. Typical clinical signs of FCV infectio

An update on investigation and management of renal bone disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Renal bone disease has significant detrimental effects on both cardiovascular and bone health. It is important to understand that the pathophysiologic mechanisms are different from traditional causes of bone disease; and thus, the monitoring and treatment of this disease process requires special attention. Although new guidelines are overdue, progress has been made in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia as well as investigational therapies for renal osteodystrophy. RECENT FINDINGS: At a time when the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease was once diet and

Insecticide-mediated changes in the population and toxicity of the thrips species, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Thrips flavus (Schrank) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Thrips flavus (Schrank) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) cause considerable damage to agricultural crops. In this study, we investigated the variations in the population density of these 2 thrips species in 2 sites (Dabai and Heilongtan) with different insecticide application levels. Bioassays were performed to determine the susceptibility of both thrips species to imidacloprid, abamectin, and high-bromine cyhalothrin in summer. The results showed that the F. occidentalis species were more abundant in Dabai than in Heilongtan during both winter and summer. Th…

Geographic Structuring and Divergence Time Frame of Monkeypox Virus in the Endemic Region.

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox is an emerging zoonosis endemic to Central and West Africa. Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is genetically structured in 2 major clades (clades 1 and 2/3), but its evolution is poorly explored. METHODS: We retrieved MPXV genomes from public repositories and we analyzed geographic patterns using STRUCTURE. Molecular dating was performed using a using a Bayesian approach. RESULTS: We show that the population transmitted in West Africa (clades 2/3) experienced limited drift. Conversely, clade 1 (transmitted in the Congo Basin) possibly underwent a bottleneck or founder effect. Depe

The LDLR, APOB, and PCSK9 Variants of Index Patients with Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Russia.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common autosomal codominant disorder, characterized by elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels causing premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. About 2900 variants of LDLR, APOB, and PCSK9 genes potentially associated with FH have been described earlier. Nevertheless, the genetics of FH in a Russian population is poorly understood. The aim of this study is to present data on the spectrum of LDLR, APOB, and PCSK9 gene variants in a cohort of 595 index Russian patients with FH, as well as an additional systematic analysis of the litera

Melatonin effects on bone: Implications for use as a therapy for managing bone loss.

Melatonin is the primary circadian output signal from the brain and is mainly synthesized in pinealocytes. The rhythm and secretion of melatonin are under the control of an endogenous oscillator located in the SCN or the master biological clock. Disruptions in circadian rhythms by shift work, aging, or light at night are associated with bone loss and increased fracture risk. Restoration of nocturnal melatonin peaks to normal levels or therapeutic levels through timed melatonin supplementation has been demonstrated to provide bone-protective actions in various models. Melatonin is a unique mole

A 15 Year Evaluation of West Nile Virus in Wisconsin: Effects on Wildlife and Human Health.

West Nile virus (WNV) is the most important and widespread mosquito-borne virus in the United States (U.S.). WNV has the ability to spread rapidly and effectively, infecting more than 320 bird and mammalian species. An examination of environmental conditions and the health of keystone species may help predict the susceptibility of various habitats to WNV and reveal key risk factors, annual trends, and vulnerable regions. Since 2002, WNV outbreaks in Wisconsin varied by species, place, and time, significantly affected by unique climatic, environmental, and geographical factors. During a 15 year

Sperm selection methods in the 21st century.

Natural sperm selection in humans is a rigorous process resulting in the highest quality sperm reaching, and having an opportunity to fertilize, the oocyte. Relative to other mammalian species, the human ejaculate consists of a heterogeneous pool of sperm, varying in characteristics such as shape, size, and motility. Semen preparation in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) has long been performed using either a simple swim-up method or density gradients. Both methodologies provide highly motile sperm populations; however neither replicates the complex selection processes seen in nature. A

Conformational preferences of helix foldamers of γ-peptides based on 2-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid.

The conformational preferences of helix foldamers having different sizes of the H-bonded pseudocycles have been studied for di- to octa-γ(2,3)-peptides based on 2-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (γAmc6) with a cyclohexyl constraint on the C(α)-C(β) bond using density functional methods. The helical structures of the γAmc6 oligopeptides with homochiral configurations are known to be much stable than those with heterochiral configurations in the gas phase and in solution (chloroform and water). In particular, it is found that the (P/M)-2.5(14)-helices are most preferred in the gas phase

Echinococcus multilocularis--a zoonosis of anthropogenic environments?

Transmission of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, is known to depend on various environmental factors which are subject to human influence. Epidemiological data suggest that in most endemic regions anthropogenic landscape changes (e.g. deforestation and agricultural practices) have led to more favourable conditions for the parasite's animal hosts, especially arvicolid rodents, thereby increasing the risk for parasite transmission and human disease. Examples are the conversion of forests or crop fields into meadows and pastures i

Influence of legume intake on biliary lipids and cholesterol saturation in young Chilean men. Identification of a dietary risk factor for cholesterol gallstone formation in a highly prevalent area.

Chileans and North American Indians have one of the highest prevalence rates of cholesterol gallstones in the world. The most common theory to explain this has been the operation of some as yet undefined genetic risk factor in these populations. Searching for some common environmental factor for gallstones in Chileans and North American Indians, we found that beans and other legumes are common foods consumed by both populations. In this study we tested the hypothesis that legume intake may favor the production of biliary cholesterol supersaturation. We studied 20 young men subjected to a diet

Biochemical markers for alcoholism: sensitivity problems.

A panel of blood tests, purportedly markers for alcohol abuse, were examined in 543 relatively healthy alcoholics entering ambulatory rehabilitation treatment. Individual tests were too low in sensitivity: gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase was abnormally high in only 49%, then mean corpuscular volume (45%), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) (25%), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) (28%), and blood alcohol (21%). HDLC was of low sensitivity, generally unaffected by liver disease, and related to quantitation of recent alcohol consumed. Combining seven markers, 82% of males and

Alterations of OCTA-Derived Iris Vessel Density and Therapeutic Responsiveness in Patients with Diabetic Retinopathy with Neovascular Glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a primary cause of blindness in the working-age population. Its end-stage complication, neovascular glaucoma (NVG), carries a dismal visual prognosis. Current late-stage diagnostic models severely limit treatment opportunities. This study aims to utilize widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (WSS-OCTA) to explore the potential of iris microcirculation parameters as diagnostic and therapeutic monitoring biomarkers for NVG. METHODS: A total of 250 participants recruited from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University between March 202

HABS-BLOCKS© Reduced Harmful Algal Bloom Activity in an in-Lake Limno-Corral Mesocosm Case Study at Grand Lake St. Marys, Ohio (USA).

HABS-BLOCKS© infused with glucose have been shown to reduce cyanobacterial populations and microcystin (MC) concentrations in laboratory mesocosm studies. An in situ limno-corral (LC) mesocosm study of HABS-BLOCKS© was conducted for two weeks during the 2025 algal bloom in Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM) (Ohio, USA). Thirty HABS-BLOCKS© or Dummy HABS-BLOCKS© (contain no glucose) were added to three treated or three control LCs, respectively. Each LC holds approximately 1,000 L of lake water. After two weeks, cyanobacterial cell densities were 89% lower in treated compared to control LCs, and chlor

Efficient spin accumulation carried by slow relaxons in chiral tellurium.

Efficient conversion between charge currents and spin signals is crucial for realizing magnet-free spintronic devices. However, the strong spin-orbit coupling that enhances this conversion also causes rapid spin dissipation, making spin signals difficult to control. Although modern materials science offers novel systems with diverse spin configurations of conduction electrons, understanding their fundamental limitations requires insights into the mechanisms behind the creation and relaxation of spin populations. In this study, we demonstrate that parallel spin-momentum entanglement at the Ferm

Musculoskeletal Failure.

Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia are prevalent musculoskeletal disorders that significantly impact the aging population's health and quality of life. Osteoarthritis, characterized by joint inflammation, leads to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Osteoporosis, a condition marked by bone density loss, increases fracture susceptibility, especially in postmenopausal women and older adults. Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, contributes to frailty and an increased risk of falls. Combined, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and sarcopenia constitute "Musculoskel

Differentiating Live Versus Dead Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Bacteria With and Without Oxidative Stress Using Buoyant Mass Measurements.

Expeditious and accurate determination of pathogenic bacteria cell viability is of great importance to public health for numerous areas including medical diagnostics, food safety, and environmental monitoring. In this work a cell buoyant mass classifier approach is presented to assess bacteria cell viability in real time. Buoyant mass measurements for live and dead Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria populations were acquired with a commercial suspended microchannel resonator, Archimedes, to generate receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. To quantitatively assess the difference i
